Chapter 3

Rosaline's pov Walking downstairs with Layla's heel dangling in my hand, I proceeded towards the kitchen to say goodbye to my mother, who's too busy cooking breakfast and humming to herself. Approaching her figure, I wrapped my arms around her making her jump in surprise. ''Good morning, mama'' I cheered while taking a glass to drink water.  ''Good morning, loves'' She greeted back to me and Layla, eyeing me up and down with a tiny smirk playing on her lips. ''I'm really glad to see you looking so professional, Rosaline. I never ever thought I'll witness it.'' Mom said chuckling with Layla joining her.  Layla is a mommy's girl. Most of the time both her and mom team up to make fun of me. Their most favourite topic to gossip about is me and how they're worried about what I'll become and I don't really mind it as I know they're just joking. ''Layla, do you know what happened last night?.'' mom asked switching her mood instantly. Layla shakes her head no while munching an apple. ''You know, last night Mrs. Andrew threw her husband out of the house in the middle of the night as she caught him talking with another woman at the phone''  Mom stated, making Layla gasp dramatically. Mrs. Andrew is our neighbor by the way. ''But I thought that was only rumours.'' Layla responded looking so interested while I, on the other hand can't help but sigh. ''Mama, how do you know all of this?'' I question her as I'm really curious how on earth she manage to get informed by what's happening around the neighborhood. Mom glanced over me and smack her teeth together, annoyed that I interrupted her from talking. ''From your aunt Mirinda, of course. She was here a while ago.'' Mom stated as if it's the most obvious thing to say. I huff dramatically, I should have known. Aunt Mirinda is Sophia's mother, who is also my mother's best friend. They spend most of their time at each others house gossiping about the ladies in the neighborhood, that's what they do in their free time and sometimes during Layla's day off she accompany mom too, while me and Sophia are in one room busy with our own world.  I have known Sophia since my diaper days. We have many things in common and just like me she is unemployed and crazy, she's like a sister that god never gave me and sometimes I can't help but ask god why he gave Layla to me as a sister not Sophia instead. When I started homeschooling, Sophia did the same. In short, she's had been with me through all of thick and thins. I got so busy with my own thoughts that I didn't even realised that mom and Layla are already done with their gossips.  Layla snapped her fingers in front of me trying to get my attention. I pulled myself out of my little daze and look at them sheepishly while scratching my neck. There's one behaviour of mine that mom and Layla hates with great passion and that is suddenly getting lost with my own thoughts. I tend to do a lot and when I say a lot, I mean a lot!. ''tsk, tsk, tsk'' Layla said shaking her head at me disapprovingly. ''I can already tell that you won't last long in the company''  She added. ''How can you be so sure, Layla?'' I question her while strapping the heels that I burrowed from her. ''Whatever you do, Rosaline. Make sure that you don't get kick out again cause this time, i promise you that I'll get you married to Franco whether you like it or not.'' Mom stated looking stern.  Upon hearing her words, my eyes widened with fear. Mom knows how I despise Franco and how I hate his existence. He's one for our distant relative now living in Spain. I'm not trying to be cocky, but that guy is head over heels for me since the very first day and no matter how many times, I reject him he just won't stop!.  ''Please tell me your kidding, ma'' I spoke looking at her winking at Layla. ''Do I look like I'm kidding you?'' she responded raising one of her eyebrows. I shake my head at her as I can't believe that she's actually blackmailing me just for a simple job. I stomped my foot angrily and turn my back towards  them to head for the interview and just when I turned my back, Layla's voice didn't went unheard by me saying, ''i told you it will work''.  That little devil, she know  all too well which buttons to push. As I wait at the porch for Layla, someone suddenly grabbed me by my shoulders. My heart accelerated but when I got a whiff of the person's fragrance, my muscles relaxed. ''How many times do I have to tell you, Sophia that stop doing coming up to me like that.'' I mumbled turning to look at her and as usual she's wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. Sophia is not your typical girl who eat salads, and who do diets. She loves eating junk and fry foods and because of that she weights a bit much than average. I mean to say she looks cute with her not so chubby cheeks. ''Girl, I heard you're going for an interview in the company that Layla works for'' She said while opening a packet of chips. ''yes, I am''I replied taking the chips from her and start eating it. ''you know I'm really hurt. I thought I'm your best friend but what type of best friend hide things from each other?'' She said feigning to be sad. ' 'it slipped from my mind, it happened so suddenly'' I said still munching at her chips making her snatch it away from me. ''in case you forgot too, but I live at the next door, you could've easily sneak out through the window just like you always do." She stated putting her arms around my shoulders. "I still don't get it, how did your mother convinced you?" She questions looking confused as she knows all too well that I'm really stubborn and once I set my mind, no one can change it. "She's blackmailing me, Sophia" I responded. "How, exactly?" She asked looking so interested. "She said that if I refused then she'll disown me and if I get fired again, which I know, I will, then she'll get me married to Franco whether I agree or not." I huff slumping my shoulders down. "Oh that's why you agreed, I thought you changed your mind or something" she said but then she suddenly looked terrified. "Please don't tell me that's it's Franco that we grew up with that we're talking about." She said disgust pure on her face and as if reading my mind, she got her answer. She shook her head but smiled at me encouragingly. "Don't worry, you just control your mouth and be careful" she added patting me at my back when Layla suddenly came out shouting that we're getting late for work and why I didn't call her. Placing a quick kiss on Sophia's cheek, I followed Layla at the cab that she hailed and then once I got seated, I forced myself to calm down when Layla took my hands into her and pulled me into a hug, whispering, "Don't worry, you'll be fine. I'm here." But little did I know, I just dug my own grave.
