His Heir
I was getting incredibly worried. I sighed, dragging my eyes away from the double doors which remained shut. I turned to the clock hanging on the wall and stared at it the same way I had been doing all night. It was 2AM, two hours past our wedding anniversary. I picked up my phone which sat beside me and turned it on, expecting a call or even a text from Eduardo. I huffed in disappointment when I saw no text from him. It was our wedding anniversary. I had tried calling him since the previous night and that morning, but I got no response. His secretary, Serena, was not picking up her calls either, and it made me worry. At first, I blamed it on his busy schedule. He was a billionaire and CEO of tech companies worldwide. To top it all, he was the alpha of the Black Moon Pack. He had a lot on his plate, but then again I thought, Eduardo never forgot important dates like my birthday and anniversaries. He never missed it for anything in the world and that was why I was still waiting even though it was two hours past midnight. Something might have happened. Eduardo was not like that. He had never done this before. I clicked on his name on my contact list and just as I was about to dial his number for the one hundredth time today, I heard my mother-in-law's voice from behind. "How about you take a hint and stop wasting your time?" I immediately dropped my phone and turned around to face her. How long had she been there? "Mother," I called, my voice couldn't hide my surprise. "Are you still awake?" She folded her arms, "why are you here wasting your time?" I glanced at the door. "I know he is on his way, mother. He is just running late, maybe he had a last-minute engagement." I said, wishing it was true. Helena snickered, "Oh darling, till when are you going to keep denying reality? My son is tired of you. Why don't you get that? No man would remain faithful to a barren woman, don't you think?" "Mother... "It's been six years, Aurora. Six years since you married my son, and what have you got to show for it, huh? Tell me!" She yelled. I lowered my head, trying hard to hide my tears and shame. I knew everything would boil down to that - my inability to bear children after six years of marriage. "I'm sure Eduardo doesn't think that way. He... he will never cheat on me." I raised my head and stated firmly, "he is just busy with work, mother. He will make up for it. He always does." She scoffed and shook her head in mockery. "For a Luna who cannot produce an heir for her Alpha, you have so much faith in him." With that being said, she walked off. It was only then that I let the tears I've been holding fall freely. I wiped it off with the back of my palm and glanced at the door one last time. Maybe mother was right. A man like Eduardo Garcia with so much wealth and power wouldn't remain faithful to a barren woman like me. I picked up my phone and walked into the dining room. My tears threatened to fall as I stared at the preparations I had made to make our anniversary perfect. The table was set with a white linen cloth, and in the center was a large bowl of all his favorite fruits. I took my time to prepare all of his favorite meals. On the side of the table, a pitcher of red wine and fine glasses waited to be poured. The chairs were upholstered in deep red velvet, and the chandelier hung above the table, casting a soft glow. While preparing this, I imagined Eduardo sitting at the head of the table while we ate and chatted away happily. We always celebrated our anniversaries indoors and I always made sure it was perfect and different from the other years. Taking a deep breath, I decided to call it a night. With the help of the maid, I cleared the table and retired to bed. I'm sure I would get explanations from Eduardo in the morning. I hope. *** I could not sleep all night. I kept tossing around in worry. I woke up pretty tired and frustrated from lack of sleep. I walked to the huge wall mirror in my room and winced when I saw my reflection. My eyes were heavy with bags hanging underneath and my glossy brown curls were matted and tangled with strands sticking out in odd directions. I needed a coffee to wake me up, so I strolled to the kitchen. Surprisingly, I met mother there. What was she doing up this early? "Good morning, mother," I greeted her as I walked in. "What is good about the morning, Aurora?" She asked while sipping her tea. I dismissed her question and carried on with making myself a cup of coffee. I was used to my mother-in-law's cold attitude toward me and I knew better than to respond. Even if I wanted to, I'd not be on an empty stomach and with a low energy level. After preparing breakfast, I settled alone in the dining room to eat. I was halfway through when I suddenly remembered I had not checked my phone since the previous night. As I turned it on, I got notified that I had a message from Eduardo. My Alpha: Sorry it's coming late... The next thing after the message was an attachment. I immediately clicked on it and the moment it opened, I wished I hadn't opened it. All the blood drained from my face. I stared at the screen with wide eyes and mouth agape. My brows were raised in surprise and my jaw dropped to the floor. "What..." my heart raced as I stared at the picture in my phone. No... no it wasn't possible! I kept repeating in my head as my phone fell out of my hand. I sat frozen, my pounding heart was the only muscle in my body that was still able to move. When the shock wore off a bit, I gathered all my momentum and picked up the phone which still displayed the picture on the screen. In the picture, Eduardo was lying shirtless on the bed with Serena curled up beside him, her head resting on his chest. My wolf howled in sadness as she couldn't bear seeing our mate with another woman. My heart clenched in sadness. The longer I stared at the screen, the more I felt nauseous. This was not happening. This was not real! I tried to console myself as tears flooded my eyes. I immediately wiped them away, knowing mother could walk in at any time. I couldn't give her the satisfaction of seeing me cry. I finally scrolled down to the last message. My Alpha: Happy anniversary, I guess. No, this can't be. I got off the chair and rushed upstairs to my room. I was not going to believe anything until I heard it from him directly. I was going to his company. I grabbed my car key and rushed outside. *** "I'm here to meet my husband!" I informed the receptionist who stood to welcome me on my arrival. "I haven't been able to reach him for days now." "So sorry about that, Ma'am, he traveled to Johannesburg..." "I'm well aware of that" I cut in, trying hard to keep my voice calm and collected. The only thing that wasn't giving me away was the dark eyeglasses that concealed my puffy red eyes. "He returned this morning and is currently in the hospital..." My eyes widened. "W... What happened to him? Is he okay? What is the name of the hospital?" "Victoria's, ma'am." I didn't need to be told twice before I drove out of the company. On arriving at the hospital, I met one of the nurses who directed me to where Eduardo was. I immediately rushed off but was distracted when I saw a familiar red-haired inside one of the rooms. "Serena." I said to myself and walked in to meet her, admiring her newly polished nails. Eduardo wasn't in the room, which meant he was elsewhere. "Where is my husband?" I demanded at once. There was no way I was going to believe some fancy picture of them together without confirming it from Eduardo. "With the Doctors" "Why? What happened to him?" She finally looked up at her, her face pungent. "Why ask so many questions, Aurora? Are you finally tired of sitting around and doing nothing?" I stared at her in shock and couldn't believe she had spoken to me in such a manner. She even addressed me by my first name, instead of Mrs Garcia. "Forget I asked. I'll find him myself!" I finally replied and turned to leave. "Aren't you going to ask what I'm doing here? Aren't you going to ask about the pictures? I'm sure you must've seen them" The reminder caused sizzles down my spine as my heart started beating heavily. Slowly, I turned around to face her. "Yes, I saw them. How could I have missed?" "Well?" She asked and smirked smugly. "I do not believe them. My husband will never cheat on me!" Her loud laughter rang across the room. "Says the barren woman!" "Call me that one more time..." "You cannot do anything, barren woman!" She cut in and smirked. "You are as harmless as a baby bunny. And oh, you should thank me for giving Eduardo what you could never and will never give him." She paused and raised her hands to her stomach. Rubbing the flat surface, she added. "In here is a priceless jewel. His unborn child, his heir!" No, it couldn't be.
