Chapter Three

1436 Words
Jack Normally, I would enjoy my class and even be slightly disappointed when the bell sounded and signalled that it was over, but not today. Throughout my entire math class today, all I could think about was what had happened before school. I couldn't get that poor girl's terrified face out of my head. I didn't even know her name. I was sure I had seen her a couple of times before around school, but she was so quiet and kept to herself. Jacob had sat next to me in his usual place, having arrived ten minutes after me. I mean, seriously, how long does it take to kiss a girl goodbye and walk twenty yards to your class? He had uttered an apology to our teacher and used Ruby injuring herself as an excuse. Pathetic. She was clearly milking it for Jacob's sympathy, and he was fawning over her like some sad lovesick puppy. He had tried to talk to me a couple of times during class, but I had ignored him and pretended to be focused on my work. Which in itself was not unusual, but I knew he could sense I was pissed at him. When the bell rang out, I was more than ready to get out of that classroom. Partly because I was still angry at Jacob and his failure to back me up over his silly little tart, but mainly because I wanted to find the girl from this morning and make sure she was OK. " Jack!" Jacob grabbed my shoulder as I stormed from the classroom. I was a man on a mission. " What?" I snapped at him. " Are you seriously pissed at me about this morning?" " I think that much is obvious. Ruby attacked that girl, and she ripped her hair out of her head. Meanwhile, you stand there and defend her." " She could have been really hurt if I hadn't caught hold of her. She just reacted in the heat of the moment." He tried to reason, but I wasn't having any of it. " Well, maybe if she wasn't wearing such ridiculous shoes, she would have been able to keep her balance." Jacob started to look angry himself now. " What is your problem with Ruby? She has done nothing to you, and I really like her. That girl should have been watching where she was going, and the whole situation could have been avoided. None of this is Ruby's fault, and I don't get why you feel the need to defend some girl whose name we don't even know." " You really like her? Please! You just like that she is easy and puts out for you whenever you want." " Oh, I get it now. You're jealous. Because I'm getting some with such a hot girl, and you have never had more than a quick blow job at one of my friends' parties." I was about to shout angrily at him that he knew fine well, I was waiting for my mate, but our shouting had already caused quite a scene, and a small crowd had started to gather around us. Other students with nothing better to do were now staring at us. Knowing I had to be careful what I said, as this wasn't just a school full of werewolves, and many of the students here were, in fact, human and had no idea about the existence of our world, I bit my tongue and stomped away from my brother angrily. I could hear the quiet giggles of the crowd as I shoved my way through. My brother had just announced to them all that I was still a virgin and with it now only being less than a week until our eighteenth birthday, that was sure to be an exciting topic for them all to discuss. Don't get me wrong, I am not ashamed to still be a virgin. In fact, I am quite proud that when the day comes when I finally meet my mate, I will be able to honestly tell her that I have saved myself for her. I just don't particularly want my love life, or lack of it, to be a topic of discussion at school. My business is mine, and Jacob had no right whatsoever to say what he did. I was pissed at him already this morning, but all he had to do was apologise for not backing me up. He didn't even have to say anything in front of Ruby. Now I was absolutely livid with him. I stormed out of the school and headed towards the woods that stood a few hundred metres to the edge of it. I needed to calm down before I could even think about going back to another class. Being in the woods would help. The calm, quiet atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaotic one back at school. I often came here to study when I wasn't in the library. Even though the library was quiet, it was still full of other people and with heightened werewolf senses that could sometimes be distracting. I slowed my pace from a fast jog to a casual walk as I reached the small path that was the opening into the woods. I took a deep breath, inhaling the smells of the nature around me as I continued to walk. With every step I took deeper into the woods, I could feel myself getting calmer. The scent of all the different wild flowers around me and the gentle trickle of a stream off in the distance were all helping to soothe my anger. Feeling sufficiently relaxed, I decided to turn back and return to school when I heard a sudden sound that didn't belong. It was quiet, but it was unmistakable. A small sob and then a sniff. My wolf, Hunter, perked up his ears inside my head. He had been quiet all morning, but then that wasn't unusual for him. Being a part of me, he was generally quite reserved, too. " Sounds like someone is crying." He said to me, stating the obvious. I nodded my head and turned back in the direction I had been walking into the woods. I followed the path slowly, listening intently as I went. I heard another sniffle off to my right, this time louder, and I knew I must be getting close to the source of the sound. Leaving the path, I pushed my way through some thick brambles, scratching my arms on them as I went. As I broke through the last of them, I was shocked to come upon the person crying. Sat hugging her knees to her chest and her face buried into her knees, arms also covered in scratches from I assumed the same brambles. It was the girl from earlier that Ruby had attacked. She finally noticed my presence as I took a couple of steps towards her, snapping a large twig under my foot. Her head whipped up, and her face was full of panic and fear. Hunter whimpered in my head. He didn't like to see this girl upset anymore than I did. She hurried to her feet and snatched up her bag. Before I could even open my mouth to speak, she started to run away. This part of the woods away from the path was thick with vegetation, so she couldn't really go that fast. " Stop! Please." I called after her. She kept running. I couldn't let her go off on her own like this. Not after everything that had already happened to her today. So I started to jog after her. " I'm not going to hurt you. You don't need to be scared of me." I told her as I easily closed the distance between us. Sensing I was close behind her, she glanced quickly over her shoulder and, in doing so, didn't see a small rock right in front of her. I watched as her foot made contact with it, and it twisted her ankle to an uncomfortable angle. I was now close enough to catch hold of her before she fell to the ground. As I steadied her on her feet, I could feel her entire body trembling. " I am not going to hurt you." I said again. She looked up at me with her tear stained face. " Everyone else does." She whispered. " Well, I am not everyone else. What's your name?" She stared at me for a few moments analysing my face. Until she finally whispered again. " Lola."
