Chapter Twelve

1132 Words
Lola I don't know when I fell asleep last night, but I know that twice in the night I was woken by strange noises. Both times when I woke, my instinct was to turn towards the door, expecting to see George looming towards me, stumbling and swearing. But to my surprise the chair was exactly where I had left it and the house seemed to be still and quiet, except from the odd snore coming from downstairs. The first time I woke, I lay there puzzled for a while pondering the sound that had awoken me. As crazy as it sounds, I could have sworn it was the howl of a wild animal. Although, I am in a house in a forest so who knows what is really lurking in the trees? It's not like I go wandering around out there at night. I must have drifted back off because the next thing I know I was sitting up in bed again panicked by another sound, again I saw the chair hadnt moved so I knew it wasn't George. As I quickly scanned the room for threats, I could have sworn I saw the flash of something moving just outside my window but I knew I must have imagined it. All the thoughts of wild animals in the woods earlier was clearly messing with my still half asleep brain. My head was throbbing and as I tried to drift back off to sleep, I struggled to get comfortable. The large bruise on my stomach and cuts to my arms didn't help matters either. I must have eventually fallen asleep because the next time I opened my eyes the sun was beaming through my window. I winced at how bright the light was and painfully heaved myself up from the mattress and made my way to my window. As I reached over to pull the thin blanket I used as a curtain across it, I caught sight of the old ladder I used to clean the windows propped up just below. I couldn't remember leaving it there and my mind went back to last night when I thought I saw something moving outside my window. Was someone looking in at me? Who could have possibly been here and why? No one knows where I live and no one cares enough to come here any way. No, you must have left it there, I told myself and pulled the blanket across the window. I sat back down on my mattress and listened quietly, I wondered if George had made it up to his bed last night or passed out downstairs. After ten minutes or so of silence I decided it was probably best to try and sneak out of the house for the day. I already knew I wasn't going to school. I sighed as I pulled out a clean summer dress and changed into it as quietly as I could. Then I brushed my hair as gently as I could, glad I had washed the blood out the day before at the Bensons. I wasn't going to risk having a shower and waking George this morning. The Bensons were still away so I figured I would go there and watch TV for a few hours until I was due home. I doubted any of the teachers at school would even notice I was missing. I moved the chair away from the door and slowly opened it listening for any sound of movement. Nothing. I went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth, avoiding looking into the mirror. I already knew how bad I looked, I didn't need reminding. Once I was done I was considering how to get out of the house. I had heard George's snoring downstairs when I was brushing my teeth and I knew that there was a good chance that the creaking floorboards would wake him and I really didn't want a repeat of the previous day. I suddenly remembered the ladder outside my window and it seemed like the perfect solution. I went back into my room and quietly crept down the ladder. As soon as I was out of sight of the house I let out a huge sigh of relief. I finally felt safe, even if it was just going to be for a couple of hours. I walked through the forest, heading towards the Bensons house. When I reached the end of the street I had a quick look around to make sure there was no one around. I knew the Bensons wouldn't mind me going there but I just didn't want to have to explain to any of the neighbours why I wasn't in school. The coast was clear and I made it inside unhindered. I settled down on the couch and put on a series on Netflix. I must have got carried away with it because I suddenly realised that it was gone 4pm again and for the second day in a row I was going to be late making George's food. I ran out of the house, not caring this time if anyone saw me. I sprinted through the forest as fast as my legs would carry me. I was a hot sweaty mess by the time I reached home, but I didn't care. When I reached the front door I slowed down to catch my breath, waiting to walk through the door as normally as possible. I turned the handle and stepped inside. Before I could even look around, he was there. Grabbing me by the throat and slamming me into the wall. He kicked the door shut and leaned into my face. " Where the f**k have you been all day?" He snarled at me, the alcohol stench of his breath making my stomach turn. " A...at school..." I managed to gasp out. "LIAR" he roared at me. " I HAD A CALL FROM YOUR HEADTEACHER. YOU HAVEN'T BEEN AT SCHOOL FOR TWO DAYS!" " I just missed registration." I gasped out quickly thinking that might be enough to convince him. He suddenly let go and I clutched my chest gasping for breath and collapsing to floor. He took a step back glaring down at me. " Is that so, then why have you been late home too?" " I told you full class detentions" Without warning he pulled his foot back and kicked me. I let out a scream as his shoe made contact with my already bruised chest. " YOU ARE A f*****g LIAR." "Nooo please don't hurt me" I cried out as I saw him draw his foot back again for another kick. I closed my eyes and braced myself for the impact of his foot but instead I heard the sound of the front door breaking.
