Chapter Thirteen

1368 Words
Jack I don't think that I have ever had such a restless night's sleep before. Every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was Lola's terrified face. Scared of Ruby, scared in her room and worst of all scared of me. I had gone back and forth in my head over why she had gotten under my skin so much, in such a short space of time. Was it because I just felt so sorry for her, or could it be possible that she was my mate? She seemed so sweet and innocent and there was no denying how beautiful she was. In fact, for the first time in my life, I was actually considering the possibility of having a relationship with someone who wasn't my mate. At least it's only got a few more days to go until I find out, and I secretly prayed to myself that she was. Human or not, I really hoped she was mine. I dragged myself out of bed when my alarm sounded and hurried to get dressed. The bonus of having barely slept was that I had had the time to come up with what I thought was a decent plan. I have decided that if Lola is not in school today, as she insinuated yesterday, then straight after school I am going to go to her house. I am going to use the excuse that one of the teachers asked if anyone would be willing to take her the work she had missed and that I volunteered. That would explain how I got her address too. With my plan set in my mind, I felt a bit better about everything. I went and knocked on Jacob's door, thinking I would have to wake him up as usual. To my surprise, he opened it instantly and more surprisingly he was dressed too. " What the..?" I stared at him confused. " Didn't sleep great" He mumbled as he walked past me and down the stairs. " Me either" I told him as I followed him. As we were both downstairs with plenty of time we managed to make a decent breakfast and head out to school in record time. Jacob drove today and as we drove I ran through my plan with him. He nodded as I told him what I had decided to do but didn't offer any input. He was weirdly quiet. "Ok, Spill," I said as we pulled up at school. " What?" " You have barely said two words since we left the house." " Told you, didn't get much sleep" He mumbled. " Nah, there's more to it." I pressed. " Fine, but you can't say this to Ruby." " K" He sighed and turned to me. " Honestly I couldn't stop thinking about what you said about Lola. The state of her room, her being scared enough to barricade the door and how much worse that makes what happened with Ruby". " So what are you going to do?" " I think you were right yesterday, I need to speak to Ruby and tell her that I think she was out of line." He sighed. " I honestly just don't want to get into a fight with her and I know this will start one, but Lola didn't deserve that yesterday". " Want me to come with you while you speak to her?" I offered. " No, I don't want her to think that I am only saying it because you are there. She needs to know I mean it." He took a deep breath as he spotted Ruby waving madly just outside the school. " Here goes nothing" " Good luck" I watched as he walked away and then scanned the school grounds for Lola. There was no sign of her outside as I had expected but there was still a chance she was inside the school already. I crossed my fingers and headed inside. Still hoping she was here and then there would be no need for my plan to go to her house. If she were here I could try and speak to her about her situation and see if I could help. Much to my disappointment but not surprise she wasn't in school today. So I was going to have to go to her house. The day went at a snail's pace, in fact I am sure at one point the hands on the clock in the math class actually stopped moving. Jacob found me at dinner and was even glummer than he had been this morning. As predicted his talk with Ruby did not go well and she had even accused him of having feelings for Lola. She had screamed at him in front of the whole class before storming out with Jacob hot on her heels, trying desperately to calm her down. He told me at dinner, she had only calmed down when he promised to buy her a new outfit and accompany her to Ashley's party at the weekend. The minute the bell rang indicating the end of the day, I was out the door. I was weirdly excited to see Lola again even if it was going to be awkward making up the story about how I knew where she lived. Jacob came sprinting after me as I headed towards his car. " Jack, you want me to drive you there?" " Yeah, but I think you should park up and wait away from the house. She is already nervous around me I don't want to overwhelm her" " No problem." We set off and as we got as close as we could in the car, Jacob pulled over and turned off the engine. " Let me know if you need back up." He said as I got out of the car. I nodded and started to walk. I had my bag slung over my shoulder with some of my notes that I was going to pass off as work for her to catch up on. As the trees began to thin and I knew I was approaching the clearing, my blood went cold as I heard the unmistakable sound of a man bellowing and I knew instantly that Lola was in danger. I dropped my bag and sprinted the rest of the way, I reached the door just in time to hear Lola's scared voice begging him not to hurt her. I didn't even hesitate for a second as I smashed into the door, shattering the wood and bursting inside. The scene that greeted me was worse than I could have possibly have imagined. Lola was in a heap on the floor up against the wall and gasping for air, the marks around her neck instantly told me he had had his hands around her throat and now his leg was extended backwards and it was clear to me he was about to kick her as she sat on the floor. "J, HERE NOW." I have never felt rage like that as I leapt towards the man and took him down to the floor in an instant. I drove my fist into his face and felt his nose break, then pulled back arm back for another punch, this time his eye socket shattered. As I pulled my arm back for a third time I felt someone grab my arm. Spinning around I saw Jacob holding my arm and he pulled me off the man. " That's enough Jack." I tried to shake myself loose determined to do more damage when he linked me. " Lola" Oh s**t, for a split second I was so consumed with rage for this man that I forgot she was there and as I turned to look at her, my heart broke she looked even more terrified than ever. Her big green eyes were wide with fear and she was shaking like a leaf. " Lola, it's ok." I said as gently as I could. She shook her head and got shakily to her feet. " You have just made things so much worse" she whispered and turned and began to run up the stairs away from me.
