Chapter Fourteen

1425 Words
Jack I watched as Lola ran on shaky legs up the stairs, having to use the stair rail to keep her balance as she went. I cursed myself for the way I had handled the situation. I didn't need to hit that guy the way I did. All I needed to do was take him down and stop him from hurting Lola. I had told her yesterday I wouldn't hurt her, that I wasn't like everyone else, and then I had just attacked someone right in front of her. " What are you waiting for go after her". Jacob snapped me back into the moment and I made after Lola, who had just reached the top of the stairs. I took the stairs two at a time, easily gaining on her and caught up with her just as she reached her door. " Lola, please stop". I gently took hold of her arm, causing her to stop dead in her tracks. I slowly turned her to face me and I could feel her shaking. I attempted to pull her towards me into an embrace but stopped when she winced. She was clearly injured and not just from Ruby's attack the day before. The marks around her throat were proof of that, but I had no idea what other damage she had suffered at that as*holes hands. " I promise you are safe," I whispered to her. She shook her head at me and her eyes flashed towards the stairs, and she started to pull away towards her room. Remembering how I saw the chair against the door the previous night, I realised she must think of that as a somewhat safe space, so I decided to let her go into her room, but I followed her inside. She looked scared as she turned and saw me standing in the room with her, but without another word, she hurried to the door and closed it and, as I had suspected, pushed the chair underneath the handle. She stood with her ear against the door for a minute, holding her breath, then, when she was satisfied that the man wasn't coming, she took a few wobbly steps and collapsed onto the mattress on the floor. She turned her back towards me and began to cry uncontrollably. " You have no idea what you have done." She sobbed. I sat down next to her on the mattress and reached out to gently stroke her back. " Please, Lola, don't cry. I promise you are safe." " Safe? How can I possibly be safe now?" " Because I am here with you and Jacob is downstairs with that man." I spat the final word with disgust. " And what happens when you leave? He will be more angry than he has ever been before". Her cries became louder, and I couldn't take it anymore. I had to hold her in my arms. I needed her to feel safe and protected. I lay down slowly next to her, afraid any sudden movements would scare her even more than she already was. I began to gently stroke her hair in an attempt to calm her down. " You don't need to worry, we are not going to leave you here alone with that man," I whispered to her. Her cries became less desperate, and I could hear her heart rate starting to slow. I was pleased she was calming down and that despite what she had witnessed me doing, I was the one to calm her. I began to wonder again if she was my mate, then shook the thought from my head. Now was not the time for that. " What am I going to do?" She suddenly whispered. Turning her head towards me slightly. I reached around and gently took her chin between my fingers and turned her face towards me. " You are not staying here" I told her firmly as I looked her squarely in the eyes. She looked away immediately. " I have no one else, nowhere else." " You can come home with me." She tensed next to me and moved away slightly. " I don't even know you. Why would you want to help me?" " I know you must be scared of me too after what you just saw, but I swear I am not normally like that. I just saw him hurting you and I snapped. I want to help you because nobody deserves to be treated that way." I didn't tell her that I had feelings for her already. She was going through enough emotions right now and didn't need me to add to the confusion in her head. " Please say you will come with me and my brother. Even if it's just for a few days till we can sort out something else for you?" I practically pleaded with her. " I don't know..." " Well, I am not leaving you here alone with that piece of s*it. So if you don't come I will stay here." " NO," she started to sound panicked again. " That's decided then, you are coming with us," I told her. She stared at me confused, clearly wondering if she had just agreed, or I had decided for her. " Make sure that piece of s*it is out of the way when we come down," I linked Jacob. " Already done. I have tied him up in the shed out the back." " Come on Lola, let's get out of here." I sat up and gently wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her into a seated position next to me. She winced and inhaled sharply as she sat up. Sensing, I noticed she avoided my eyes. " Lola, where are you hurt?" She just shook her head at me. " Lola, please show me." She looked at me with her beautiful emerald eyes and whispered " Please don't make me." I decided not to push her any further right now, but if I was going to help her I was going to need to see what I was dealing with soon. "OK, you don't have to show me if you don't want to. Come on, let's get out of here." I stood up and held my hand out for Lola to help her to her feet. She hesitated for a moment, then took my hand in hers, getting to her feet. " Thank you for coming when you did." " Don't mention it" I grinned at her. She smiled back at me, a much more bashful and shy smile, and then as she took a step closer to me, I watched in panic as the colour drained from her cheeks. " I...don't feel...." I closed the remaining space between us and caught her easily in my arms as she fainted. I lifted her up into my arms with ease and carried her towards the door. I nudged the chair away with my knee and made my way downstairs. Jacob stood up from the couch as he heard me approaching and turned to look at me carrying Lola in my arms in shock. " What the hell happened up there?" " I think she is in shock, not to mention her injuries. I think it all got too much. She fainted." " Poor girl." " Good news is she is coming home with us." I told him as I carried on walking towards the door. " Wait, What?" " Mum and Drew will be fine about it once I explain what was happening here." " But she's human, you can't just take her to the packhouse," Jacob argued. " Drew did it with us and mum when we were oblivious to our world. The pack will just have to be told to be aware she is there. No shifting in the open and no werewolf talk." "OK, if you think it will be alright." I carried her all the way back to the car and then climbed into the back seat, still cradling her in my arms. Jacob went to the front and began to drive. I sat there gently stroking her cheek with my little finger, hoping the sensation was soothing her in some way. Realising we were nearing the pack, I looked up to ask Jacob to mindlink Mum and Drew and make them aware of the situation. As I caught his eye in the rearview mirror, I could have sworn I caught a hint of jealousy in his gaze.
