Chapter Five — A Misstep in the Rain The next day, the city was bright and crisp, a welcome change from yesterday’s drizzle. Lena arrived at the café earlier than usual, her mind still lingering on Ethan’s words from the rain-soaked morning. She smiled to herself, thinking about the vulnerability they had shared, the quiet intimacy that had begun to grow between them. Ethan wasn’t there yet. She chose her usual table by the window, stirring her coffee absentmindedly, watching people hurry past on the sidewalk. Then, the door swung open, and in he came—looking slightly flustered, carrying a small stack of papers. “Sorry I’m late,” he said, settling into the chair across from her. “Work ran over.” “It’s okay,” Lena replied, though a small flicker of disappointment lingered in her chest. They began talking, laughing lightly about trivial things, when a knock at the door interrupted them. A woman—smiling, confident—entered and waved at Ethan. Lena’s stomach sank, an unfamiliar pang of unease cutting through the morning warmth. “Ethan?” the woman said brightly. “I didn’t expect to see you here!” Ethan rose slightly, polite but tense. “Hey, Julia. Just grabbing some coffee.” The brief interaction left Lena quiet, her mind spinning. Who was she? A coworker? A friend? A date? She wanted to ask, but her voice caught in her throat. She watched Ethan sit back down, trying to mask his unease, and Lena forced herself to smile. The rest of the morning passed in an awkward mix of small talk and fleeting glances. Lena laughed when she could, but her thoughts kept drifting to Julia’s smile and the question it raised. Ethan noticed her distraction. “Lena… are you okay?” he asked softly, his tone gentle but concerned. Lena hesitated. Should she voice the jealousy she hadn’t even realized until now? Instead, she nodded. “Yeah. Just… lost in thought.” Ethan reached across the table, just brushing her hand with his fingertips—a silent reassurance. “You don’t need to be. I’m here.” It was enough for now, though Lena’s heart still raced. The morning ended with a quiet tension neither of them fully understood, a subtle reminder that even new connections could face shadows from the outside world. As she left, Lena realized that love, even in its tender beginnings, sometimes carried a sting. And yet… she couldn’t help wanting to see him tomorrow.
