Chapter 1: The Girl Without a Force
The city of Eldoria glittered beneath the morning sun.
Golden banners danced from stone towers, market stalls crowded the streets, and the air buzzed with excitement. Today was Ascension Day—the day every nineteen-year-old would publicly reveal their Force and officially take their place in society.
For most people, it was a celebration.
For Elara Voss, it felt like an execution.
She stood among hundreds of young men and women in the kingdom's Grand Square, her stomach twisting into knots.
"Relax," her friend Lysa whispered. A faint blue glow swirled around her fingers. "You've worried about this for years."
Easy for her to say.
Lysa had manifested her Force at age twelve.
Everyone had.
Everyone except Elara.
A trumpet sounded.
The crowd fell silent.
At the center of the square stood the Pillar of Origins, a towering crystal that had measured the Forces of Aetheria's people for over a thousand years. Sunlight flowed through its surface like liquid fire.
Beside it stood the High Chancellor.
His silver robes swept across the marble platform as he raised his hands.
"Today," he announced, his voice carrying across the square, "the next generation will reveal the gifts bestowed upon them by destiny."
The crowd erupted into cheers.
Elara felt sick.
One by one, names were called.
A young man stepped forward.
The crystal blazed green.
"Nature Force."
Applause followed.
Another candidate approached.
The crystal flashed red.
"Flame Force."
Louder applause.
The ceremony continued.
Wind.
Stone.
Water.
Light.
Every person possessed something.
Every person except her.
Elara's palms became damp.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Then she heard it.
"Elara Voss."
The world seemed to stop.
Lysa squeezed her hand.
"You'll be fine."
Elara wasn't so sure.
Slowly, she stepped toward the platform.
Hundreds of eyes followed her.
No.
Thousands.
The entire city seemed to be watching.
The High Chancellor regarded her with a strange expression.
Pity.
She hated that look.
Taking a deep breath, Elara placed both hands against the crystal.
Nothing happened.
The square became silent.
A painful silence.
The kind that made her wish the ground would swallow her whole.
The Chancellor frowned.
"Try again."
Elara pressed harder.
Still nothing.
No light.
No color.
No Force.
Whispers spread through the crowd.
"I heard she never manifested."
"Impossible."
"She's nineteen."
"Maybe she's cursed."
Each word struck like a knife.
The Chancellor stepped forward and examined the crystal.
Then he looked at Elara.
For a moment, she thought she saw fear in his eyes.
But it vanished so quickly she wasn't sure it had been there at all.
"The crystal detects no Force," he announced.
The crowd gasped.
No Force.
The words echoed through the square.
Elara lowered her head.
Humiliation burned through her chest.
Years of hope shattered in an instant.
Children laughed.
Adults whispered.
Even some of the candidates looked away.
The Chancellor cleared his throat.
"Return to your place."
Elara nodded stiffly and turned away.
Then it happened.
The crystal cracked.
A sharp sound split the air.
Everyone froze.
Another crack appeared.
Then another.
The glowing crystal trembled violently.
A pulse of black light erupted from deep within its center.
The crowd screamed.
The Chancellor stumbled backward.
Guards rushed forward.
For a brief second, the black light stretched toward Elara like living smoke.
Then it vanished.
The crystal became still.
Silence returned.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The Chancellor stared at the damaged crystal.
His face had gone pale.
Elara's heart pounded.
"What was that?" someone whispered.
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Far above the city, hidden within the shadows of the royal palace, a hooded figure watched the ceremony through a magical mirror.
The figure slowly stood.
At last.
After a thousand years.
The Invisible Force had awakened.
And the world was about to change.
That night, Elara sat alone in her small room.
Rain tapped softly against the window.
The events of the day replayed endlessly in her mind.
No Force.
No future.
No place in the kingdom.
She stared into the darkness.
Then she noticed something strange.
A shadow moved across the wall.
Not outside.
Inside.
The shadow slowly stretched upward.
As if it were alive.
Elara's breath caught.
The room suddenly grew cold.
Very cold.
Then a voice whispered from the darkness.
"Run."
The candle went out.
And somewhere beyond the city walls, something ancient opened its eyes.
