Jared followed Lucas into the study, the door closing behind them. The Beta’s usually calm demeanor was strained, his sharp features etched with concern.
“They’re regrouping,” Lucas said without preamble. “The rogues who attacked tonight weren’t acting alone. We intercepted a message—someone is orchestrating this.”
Jared’s jaw clenched. “The leader?”
Lucas nodded. “And it’s worse than we thought. They know about her.”
The room seemed to grow colder. Jared’s mind raced, the implications of Lucas’s words sending a surge of protective fury through him.
“They won’t touch her,” Jared said, his voice low and dangerous. “I’ll destroy anyone who tries.”
Lucas hesitated. “We need to consider the pack’s safety too. If this escalates into a full-blown war—”
“Then we’ll fight,” Jared interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. “She’s my mate, Lucas. There’s no scenario where I let them have her.”
Lucas nodded reluctantly. “Then we need to prepare. Reinforce the borders, double the patrols. And Jared...” He hesitated, meeting the Alpha’s intense gaze. “She deserves to know everything. If she’s going to stay, she needs to understand the risks.”
Jared exhaled heavily, running a hand through his dark hair. “I’ll tell her. But first, I need her to trust me.”
In the living room, Juliana paced. Her mind replayed Jared’s words, her heart battling her logic. The idea of mates, werewolves, and rogues sounded like something out of a fantasy novel, yet it all felt disturbingly real.
She paused by the window, staring out at the vast estate. A movement in the shadows caught her eye, and a chill ran down her spine.
“Jared?” she called, stepping closer to the glass.
Before she could react, the figure lunged, the glass shattering as a rogue crashed into the room.
Juliana screamed, stumbling backward as the rogue advanced, its eyes glowing with malice.
The door burst open, and Jared appeared, a feral growl ripping from his throat. In an instant, he was on the rogue, his movements a blur of power and precision. The fight was brutal, but Jared’s dominance was undeniable.
When it was over, Jared turned to Juliana, his chest heaving. “Are you hurt?”
She shook her head, her wide eyes brimming with tears. “What’s happening? Why are they after me?”
Jared stepped closer, his expression pained. “Because you’re more than just my mate, Juliana. You’re the key to something they’ve been searching for. Something powerful.”
“What does that mean?” she whispered.
“It means your life is about to change,” Jared said, his voice heavy with both promise and warning. “And I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”
