CHAPTER 4

848 Words
Jared led Juliana to his car, a sleek black vehicle parked at the edge of the park. He opened the passenger door for her, his movements hurried but careful not to alarm her further. “Where are you taking me?” she asked, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. “To a safe place,” Jared replied, his tone leaving no room for debate. As the car sped through the city streets, Juliana studied him from the corner of her eye. His jaw was clenched his grip on the steering wheel firm. Despite the danger they had just faced, he radiated an air of calm control. “Those men... what were they?” she finally asked, breaking the silence. Jared hesitated, his gaze fixed on the road. “Not men. Rogues. Wolves who’ve lost their way.” “Wolves?” Juliana echoed, her voice laced with disbelief. “You mean like... werewolves?” Jared glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “Yes.” She let out a shaky laugh, the absurdity of his answer almost comical. “You expect me to believe that?” “You saw what happened back there,” Jared said, his voice steady. “You saw what I am.” Juliana’s laughter faded as the memory of his strength and speed replayed in her mind. As much as she wanted to deny it, the truth was undeniable. “If that’s true... then what does that make you?” Jared pulled the car into a private driveway, the gates closing behind them. He turned to her, his eyes softer now. “It makes me someone who will protect you. No matter what.” Juliana’s heart pounded as the weight of his words settled over her. She was in a world she didn’t understand, with a man she barely knew. But for the first time in years, she felt something other than fear—a flicker of hope. Jared guided the car through the private drive, the looming gates of his estate closing securely behind them. The long driveway was lined with ancient oaks, their gnarled branches illuminated by soft path lights. For Juliana, it felt like stepping into another world—a world far removed from her modest, debt-ridden life. The car stopped in front of a sprawling mansion, its grand facade glowing warmly against the cool night. Jared exited first, moving with an effortless grace, and opened Juliana’s door. “Where are we?” she asked, her voice shaky. “My home,” Jared replied, offering his hand to help her out. She hesitated but accepted, her fingers brushing his. His touch was warm, and steadying, and she felt a strange sense of safety she couldn’t explain. The inside of the mansion was even more breathtaking than the exterior. Marble floors gleamed under a massive crystal chandelier, and the air carried the faint scent of cedarwood and leather. The space exuded wealth and power, yet there was an underlying warmth that surprised her. “Please, sit,” Jared said, gesturing toward an expansive sofa in the living room. “You’ve been through a lot tonight.” Juliana sat cautiously, her gaze flickering to the roaring fireplace. “You keep saying that, but you haven’t explained anything,” she said, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “What were those things? Why were they after me? And who are you?” Jared stood by the mantle, his hands clasped behind his back. For a moment, he said nothing, his jaw tightening as he seemed to weigh his words. “I told you the truth about them,” he said finally. “They’re rogues—wolves without a pack, driven by chaos and violence. They were after you because of who you are.” Juliana frowned, her confusion deepening. “Who I am? I’m just a barista trying to make ends meet. There’s nothing special about me.” Jared turned to her, his piercing blue eyes locking onto hers. “You’re wrong. You’re my mate.” The word hung in the air, heavy and foreign. Juliana blinked, unsure if she’d heard him correctly. “Your... mate? Like a soulmate?” “Yes,” Jared said, his voice firm. “In my world, mates are rare, sacred. You’re not just someone I’ve been destined to be with—you’re the other half of my soul.” Juliana stared at him, her heart racing. She wanted to laugh, to dismiss his words as the ramblings of a delusional man. But deep down, something resonated. The way he looked at her, the way her body seemed to respond to his presence—it was unexplainable, yet undeniable. “This is insane,” she whispered, shaking her head. “I don’t even know you.” “You will,” Jared said, his tone softening. “And I’ll prove to you that this connection isn’t just real—it’s unbreakable.” Before she could respond, Lucas entered the room, his expression grim. “Alpha, we need to talk.” Jared’s posture stiffened. “Juliana, stay here. I won’t be long.”
