CHAPTER 3

694 Words
The city park was quiet as Juliana made her way home, the cool night air a welcome reprieve after a long day. Her footsteps crunched softly against the gravel path, her senses attuned to the surrounding stillness. She tugged her jacket tighter, the faint rustling of leaves adding to the eerie atmosphere. Despite the calm, unease prickled at the back of her neck, a feeling she couldn’t shake. Unbeknownst to her, Jared Whitewall had followed her trail. From the shadows, he watched her movements, his wolf restless beneath his skin. The scent that had haunted his dreams was unmistakable now, mingling with the crisp night air. His piercing blue eyes tracked her every step, an internal battle waging between approaching her and holding back. He had waited so long for this moment, yet he couldn’t risk startling her—or worse, exposing her to the dangers that lurked in the night. When Juliana paused to adjust her scarf, she glanced around, the weight of someone’s gaze heavy on her. “Is someone there?” she called, her voice tentative yet steady. Jared stepped into the moonlight, his imposing figure framed by the silver glow. His tailored coat and broad shoulders exuded authority, but his expression was soft, almost tender. “I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said, his deep voice resonating in the stillness. Juliana’s pulse quickened as she turned to face him. “Who are you?” she asked, her voice tinged with both curiosity and caution. “Jared,” he replied simply, his eyes never leaving hers. “I was just... drawn here.” Her brow furrowed, confusion flickering across her face. “Drawn here? What does that mean?” Before Jared could answer, the air shifted. A low growl rumbled from the shadows, sending a chill down Juliana’s spine. Jared’s stance immediately changed, his body tense and protective. “Get behind me,” he ordered his voice firm and commanding. Juliana hesitated, but the sound of another growl propelled her to obey. She watched in stunned silence as three figures emerged from the darkness. Their glowing eyes and predatory movements were unnatural, their intent unmistakably hostile. Jared’s wolf surged forward, his instincts taking over. “You’ve made a mistake coming here,” he growled, his voice laced with menace. One of the rogues sneered. “And you’ve made a mistake claiming what doesn’t belong to you, Alpha.” The word sent a jolt through Juliana. Alpha? What was happening? Her confusion was drowned out by the chaos that unfolded before her. Jared moved with inhuman speed and strength, his strikes precise and lethal. She could only watch in horror and awe as he took down the first attacker with ease, his dominance evident in every movement. The second rogue lunged at Juliana, but Jared was faster. He intercepted the attack, his roar shaking the air as he tore the rogue away from her. “I said stay back!” he snapped, his gaze flickering to her briefly. Juliana stumbled backward, her heart pounding. She felt like she’d stepped into a nightmare, one where the man who had appeared out of nowhere was her only hope of survival. When the last rogue fell, Jared turned to her, his chest heaving. Blood stained his shirt, but his eyes—those piercing blue eyes—were focused solely on her. “What... what are you?” Juliana whispered, her voice trembling. Jared stepped closer, his expression softening. “Someone who’s been searching for you for a long time.” Before Juliana could respond, a rustling sound drew Jared’s attention. He scanned the shadows, his jaw tightening. “We’re not safe here. Come with me.” “Why should I trust you?” she asked, her voice shaking. “Because if you stay here, they’ll come back,” he said bluntly. “And next time, I might not be able to save you.” The urgency in his voice left little room for argument. Despite her fear and confusion, something in her gut told her to trust him. With a reluctant nod, she followed him into the night, her mind racing with questions.
