Chapter 22 Circle of Death Jeff had left his horse grazing on the grass in the cemetery. When he left the hotel, he headed back that way through the trees a little way off the road. He found his horse and rolled out his bedroll a little way from where he was grazing. The morning showed up before the sun actually rose. The sky was clear, and Jeff was awakened by coyotes howling only a few hundred feet from where he had slept. Songbirds started chirping and a finch darted from one tree to another not far away. He lay and listened for a little. It helped him know if he was alone. He heard geese come up the river and in a little while sandhills flew overhead and called down to the earth with their odd-sounding voices, almost like pigeons make but nicer to hear.
