CHAPTERONE
"Eva", Stefan yelled, walking into the apartment. Pulling off his tie, he whispered to himself "this has to be done". With that bit of courage, he walked towards the living room, sitting down, waiting for his wife to show up.
"Coming!" a voice called out from inside the innermost part of the house. It was obviously Eva, who heard the voice of her husband while reading a book.
She slammed the book shut and slipped on her slippers as quickly as possible before rushing over to the living room. 'Why is Stefan home this early?" she wondered to herself before checking the time on her watch. She sighed as she saw that the time was just fifteen minutes past three in the afternoon.
As she rushed down the stairs, she couldn't help but feel giddy at the thought of Stefan coming home early just to spend some time with her. "Maybe things will go back to normal soon", she thought to herself.
Eva walked into the living room with a smile plastered on her face. She met Stefan seated on the 3-seater couch, and she walked towards him, stretching her hands for a hug.
"Welcome back babe. Is there anything wrong? You're back quite early", Eva mentioned, after he detached himself from her embrace.
Stefan looked at her with hard eyes. "Since when did we start hugging?" he asked her, wiping off the invisible dust from his suit. Eva felt her heart drop. Maybe she was just over thinking it. How could she think he would suddenly change overnight?
"Oh sorry...I just thought-" Eva wanted to explain before she was cut off by Stefan.
'Whatever you think, keep it to yourself. I am not interested", Stefan said pointedly before digging into his briefcase and bringing out a document concealed in a brown envelope.
"Here" he said, tossing it to her. He quickly picked up his briefcase and began to walk out of the living room towards his bedroom. "Go through it fast", he said before he disappeared behind the giant door that led to the passageway.
Eva paused confused. She knew he was cold, but he had never tossed anything at her before. According to him, nobody is worth losing his manners over.
She looked at the brown file in her hands in confusion. What could be in it? She wondered. Her mind drifted to every possible scenario but none of them made sense to her. Taking a deep breath, she proceeded to open up the envelope.
She felt her heart drop to her feet when she saw the big letters pasted on the front of the paper inside the brown envelope. The words 'DIVORCE' seemed to get bigger and bigger the more she looked at it.
"This must be a mistake" She huffed. She grabbed the paper and the envelope and began to storm over to Stefan's room. She definitely needed an explanation, and she was going to make him give her that explanation.
She pushed open the door and met him lying on his king-sized bed while using his phone. She had always marveled at how well arranged the room always was, but at that point she didn't give a single damn.
'What's the meaning of this?!" She yelled, tossing the papers at him. "Explain yourself."
Stefan, who hadn't looked up since she entered, finally stared at her with his eyes hooded with what seemed like rage.
"What does it look like to you?" he scoffed.
'I'm asking you because it better not be what I think you mean", Eva said, her voice beginning to c***k a bit. She raised her head up and tried to push the tears that were threatening to fall back in. She wasn't going to cry in front of him.
"Well, it IS what you think it is" Stefan said, moving his eyes towards his phone. He didn't want to look at her because his heart was acting strangely, seeing her cry.
"A divorce? You want us to get a divorce?" Eva said, confused. At that point, the tears were already beginning to spill. "Why? What did I do?"
Stefan kept quiet and continued using his phone. He wasn't going to answer her question because the truth was; she never actually did anything to him. Atleast not her.
He never wanted to marry her in the first place. He was just forced to by his parents and now that they were dead, he finally had the chance to go back to Maya, his ex who he had to break up with due to the forced marriage. He had always resented Eva because he knew that it was when she came into his life that he had to cut ties with the love of his life.
"Stefan? I'm talking to you?" Eva cried when he refused to answer her question. Why was he being like that? He knew she liked him a lot. Why was he breaking her heart like this?
With an icy glare, Stefan said "I have already signed it and I advise that you do so too, because I'm going back to the lawyer's office this evening to return the papers".
Eva almost crumbled to the ground, but she managed to drag her two feet out of his room. When she was about to shut his room door she heard him say "Oh and pack up your things because Maya is moving in two days".
