Chapter 28 Kiah was dozing on the couch when she heard a car approach. She opened one eye, and then two. Perhaps Annie had popped back home for something. Only, it didn’t sound like their ute. The rumble of the engine was too low. In an instant, Kiah was up and peeking out the net curtains to try to catch a glimpse of the car through the trees just outside the home paddock gate. As the black Mustang pulled into view, she uttered swear words she hadn’t heard since the shearers were last in town. She raced for the kitchen and picked up the phone, her fingers hovering over the dial pad as she tried to decide who to call. The police would take at least forty minutes to arrive even under full sirens, but no way was she going to call the Doolan farm. She tried the Nalong police station anyway,
