Pitch black…
Just like my life, my body is now pitch black too, I am tainted. That innocent Alya was gone. Tears kept streaming down my cheeks, and I was consumed with self-pity. I could still feel Demir Bey’s touch and kisses on every inch of my body.
I had to get out immediately and never come back. I went to the locker room and put the file in my backpack. I stuffed my belongings inside and left the club. With my tears flowing freely, I looked back at the club, knowing this would be my last time there. I will never come here again.
I texted Şahin, and he was waiting for me at the beach. As I walked there, I felt like I have been destroyed and buried under a rubble. People and cars were passing by, but I didn’t care about any of them. I hugged myself, feeling like everyone could notice my defilement, and I wanted to scream that I was innocent.
When I arrived at the beach, I sat on a bench. I looked up at the sky, there was a full moon and the stars were also shining brightly. But I was pitch black. I was the night itself.
"Alya," I heard Şahin's voice. When I turned and saw him, he was grinning.
"I didn't know you could do it so quickly. Well done! Now give me the file!" he said. However, I pulled my bag closer to myself, I still didn't trust him. I felt like he could go back on his word at any moment. Then I took the file out of my bag.
His eyes were shining as he looked at the file. As he reached out, I stopped him with my other hand. "I did what you wanted. I want you to promise me on your honor that you will stay away from Betül and me from now on."
"You don't know how important this file is, Alya! For this file, I would give up anything, anyone."
"Yes, I couldn't hear you!" I said, and he nodded.
"I swear on my honor that I will not approach you or Betül from now on!" he said, and I handed him the file. After taking the file, he started laughing. I was staring at him in astonishment, not understanding what was going through his mind.
He stood up. "Stay away from Demir. Don't even let him find you. He'll know you took the file from him. If he finds you, if you even breathe my name, I'll finish Betül. You'll regret saying my name! Did you hear me?"
I nodded. Demir Bey shouldn't find me.
After Şahin left, I sat there for a while longer. Storms were raging inside me as I listened to the silence of the night. I slowly stood up and hugged myself again. I felt like a walking corpse on my way home. I was terrified. When I got home, Betül opened the door immediately. When she found me in that state, she immediately took me inside. I started sobbing when she hugged me.
"Alya, what happened?" she asked.
"I'm not that innocent Alya anymore! I'm tainted!" I said, and she wept too, holding my hand. When we got to the bathroom, she pushed me into the shower stall. I took off my clothes, crying. When I was only in my underwear in front of her, I couldn't cry anymore, my tears had dried up. She turned on the water, and I wished I could get rid of all my filth along with the water.
Betül washed my entire body, crying. I could see the reflection of my face in her eyes, but she couldn't look me in the eye. It was obvious that she blamed herself. After washing me, she wrapped the towel around me. When we got to the room, she dressed me like a baby, combed and braided my hair.
Then she held me, placing my head on her chest. "I'm so sorry, Alya. I hate myself for putting you through this."
I lifted my head from her chest. "I would do it again. I'm ready to do anything for you."
We silently shed more tears. As my eyes closed, the last thing I heard was Betül apologizing to me thousands of times.
*****
One month later
Demir Bey had been after me for a whole month. Şahin was right. He realized that I had stolen the file. I was so scared that he would do something to us. When Betül said he was looking for me everywhere, I couldn't even stick my head out the window. We had to dodge him.
Betül would cover her head whenever she left the house. Demir Bey's men were searching the entire neighborhood, and our next-door neighbor, Hasibe, helped us. She took us into her home. She didn't know our story exactly, but she knew that bad people were after us. We were saved thanks to her. We couldn't go to our own house. We had to stay there until Betül found a place outside of town.
I had been lying at home like a soulless person for a whole month, and lately, I couldn't even get out of bed because of nausea and weakness. Sometimes I felt dizzy, and suddenly I felt sick to my stomach. Hasibe also said I had a cold and made linden tea.
I got up for dinner one time, and I became so dizzy that I fell back on the couch. Betül immediately touched my arm. "Alya, this won't do, let's go to a doctor."
I shook my head. "He's looking for me everywhere. If I leave here, he'll find me immediately," I said.
She looked at me as if she wanted to ask something but couldn't. It looked like she didn’t want Hasibe, who was in the kitchen, to hear what she wanted to say.
"Alya, when was your last period?" she asked in a low tone.
At that moment, it felt as if scorching water was poured down my head. We didn’t use protection... As tears streamed down my face, I asked, "Betül, could I be pregnant?"
She immediately knelt in front of me. "I'm going to the pharmacy. I'll tell her I'm going to get some medicine for you, but I'll buy a pregnancy test. Don't say anything to Hasibe." she instructed, and I nodded.
After Betül left the house, I was overwhelmed with anxiety. I hadn't taken any precautions after that night. I put my hand on my stomach. Could I really be pregnant? Demir Bey's baby could be in my womb right now. I was praying that it wouldn't be. Betül came back soon after.
After dinner, Aunt Hasibe went to bed immediately. When she fell asleep, Betül raised her eyebrows at me. While she was cleaning the living room and kitchen, I went to the bathroom. With shaky hands, I followed the instructions. After waiting five minutes, I looked at the result in fear.
It was a double line. I was pregnant. Tears were streaming down my face as Betül knocked on the bathroom door. I opened the door and she came in. When I showed her the result, her jaw dropped, and she immediately pulled me to her chest.
"Alya."
"Betül, what am I going to do now? I can't have this baby!" I said, and she started stroking my hair. If I tried to have this baby, Demir Bey would find me. I couldn't do it.
"Alya, calm down. We'll figure something out. If you want, I'll take care of you and my nephew forever. We'll get out of here."
I was terrified of Demir Bey. "Betül, I'm so afraid of him. Please, do something!" I said, and she kissed my hair.
"My dear, I'm always here for you!" she said, taking the test and going to our room. She raised the covers of the bed and I got in, taking refuge in Betül again.
"Betül..."
"I'm sure you want to get rid of it now, but you can't, Alya. It's still tiny. How can you do that to it? If you get rid of it, you'll never forgive yourself."
"What if he finds out?"
"He won't find out because we're leaving here," she said. I was still uncertain, but she was right. It wasn't the baby’s fault. I put my hand on my stomach. He was the only innocent one from that sinful night, and I couldn't give him up.
*****
As the days went by, I decided to have the baby. Betül and I were going to leave this city soon. We had to leave before Hasibe realized I was pregnant. Betül left the house early in the morning. We are going to leave in a few days. As I was sorting beans, there was a knock on the door.
Hasibe and I looked at each other. She straightened the scarf on her head and stood up. My heart was in my mouth, and I was suddenly terrified. When she looked out the window, her eyes widened in alarm.
"Get out of the house now! Those men are back," she said, and I nodded. I immediately went out the back door. I leaned my back against the wall. I could hear the voices inside.
"Yes, son. Who were you looking for?"
"Auntie, stop playing games! We know that girl is in this house. Demir Bey is in the car right now. If he comes here, he'll tear your house down, give us that girl now!" he said, and tears streamed down my face.
He had come. Demir Bey had found me. He must have been furious since he came all the way here. "Son, what are you talking about? You can search the house if you want, but there's no one here!" she said, and I heard them enter.
I had to get out of here immediately. I looked from the back to the front. I could see Demir Bey in the car. Our eyes met as he was about to turn around. How could I do such a thing?
"Damn it! He saw me!" I said and started running.
I heard him getting out of the car. "Catch her, she's running away!" he shouted.
He was coming after me too, and there was nothing I could do now. I kept running with tears in my eyes, and I could hear their voices getting closer. Finally, someone grabbed me by the waist and put a cloth over my mouth.
"Found you!" were the last words I heard.
******
"I didn't do anything to you. Who are you? Let me go!"
My screams were in vain. I knew who he was. It was him. I had been hiding from him for almost a month, but he had finally caught me. I knew he would find me. Still, I tried my luck and ran away from him. It was dark everywhere because they had put a sack over my head. I was trembling all over. As tears streamed down my face, he pulled the sack off my head. He was right in front of me, looking at me with angry eyes.
Who is he? It's him… Demir Sertsoy… Also known as darkness…
The man I walked into his lair, offered myself to, and changed my life in one night… He was one of the most dangerous and ruthless mafia bosses in the underworld. I had made the biggest mistake of my life by entering his lair, but I had no other choice. They forced me. My eyes met his, and I was even more scared. He approached me and grabbed my chin tightly. His emerald green eyes were now dark, and fire was blazing in them.
"Who am I, Alya?" he asked.
"Why am I here?" I asked instead, stammering.
"You know very well why you're here, Alya. You're going to give me back what you took from me!" he said, and I realized he was talking about the file. At that point a lump got stuck in my throat.
"I swear, I didn't take anything from you. Let me go. I won't go to the police or anything!" I pleaded, but he started laughing coldly.
He shouldn't laugh, but frown instead. He turned to the man next to him. He wasn't alone. His closest friend, nicknamed the Lord of Darkness, was also with him: Mirza Hanoğlu. How could I have gotten involved with them?
"Did you hear that, Mirza? She didn't do anything!" he said, and I was even more afraid.
He was going to kill me for sure. Tears continued to stream down my face. Then the expression on his face gave way to rage. His mood swings were scaring me. He still hadn't let go of my chin; he was squeezing it even harder.
"I don't like liars, Alya! Where's the file you stole from me and gave to that dishonorable Şahin?" he asked.
Everything that had happened to me had happened because of that file. I had entered Demir's lair because of that file. That file is now in Şahin's possession. It was impossible for me to get it back from him. It was the price to deliver my sister Betül from that man's clutches. I had no choice but to lie to Demir now.
"What file are you talking about? I didn't take anything!" I said.
Demir gritted his teeth. "Do you think you can fool me with that little mind of yours? You entered my room for that file and then offered yourself to me, didn't you?" he asked.
I shook my head. "I swear, I didn't see any file! And you were very drunk that night," I continued to plead, but he squeezed my chin even harder.
"Don't play dumb with me. What was a virgin girl doing in my lair? Let me tell you the answer: he sent you because he thought I would think you were innocent, but I don't fall for these games, Alya! Now tell me the truth!"
It was all over. My inner voice started screaming at me to tell him the truth. There was a very big truth, but if I told him, my life would be over. I had to keep begging him.
"Demir Bey, there is no truth! I didn't take anything from you. Please, let me go!"
Demir let go of my chin roughly. He started pacing back and forth, suddenly he took his gun out of his pocket and pointed it at my forehead.
"Say your last prayers now because you're going to die! Do you realize how important that file you gave away is? The price for it is death!"
The cold muzzle of the gun was now on my forehead. As Demir was about to pull the trigger, I said, "Stop! I have something important to tell you. You can't kill me!" I had to do this.
Demir also frowned at me.
"I'm pregnant, I'm carrying your baby."
