The shadow of your smile
How many times have I seen you smile, a pure smile reserved only for me, on those afternoons under the willow as old as time?
It was under that willow that we exchanged vows of eternal love, promises of a life. Now, beneath it all I find is the shadow of your smile, more and more faded with time.
On an autumn afternoon like so many others, you left, left me alone with only memories.
I don't regret anything, but what would I do to see you again, to see that smile, which warmed me so many times. Now, old and tired, I think of you, of what our life would have been like if you had stayed, I would not be the shadow of a man but a man with two hearts. Yes ... when you left, you took my heart and the man I once was with you.
I lived a half life, after all what is a life without love? A person without those he loves becomes a shadow, a ghost because when they leave, they take a part of us with them.
We are made up of small parts that our loved ones give us. So, when they leave, that part that they gave us part with them, leaving only a shadow and if that part is big enough, we become shadows of people.
I do not write these words to regret or accuse you, I just thought that now, as an old man, I should explain what your departure caused me.
Make it understand that love can be the most powerful force in the world, it can move mountains, separate seas, but also destroy in an overwhelming way, so that we will never be the men and women we once were.
Perhaps, therefore, few people truly give themselves to love. They know the consequences that can come from loving, but even so, they choose to do it with every particle of their being and, when love destroys them, they rise again (something I couldn't do). These people are the strongest and most courageous in the world, stronger and more courageous than soldiers because love is a more powerful force than war.
I write these lines, to tell you about what love has done to me, but also to tell you what it has made me realize (too late to accomplish it). I hope that my conclusions will help you and all the people that are dear to you.
Yours forever,
The boy you abandoned under the willow
