ATTICUS: The Guardian of Tercera (war against demons) by: Pennieee Chapter 1 What is the worst thing in the morning? For Atticus the worst thing in the morning is waking up at exactly 6:00 am to prepare for school. Who wants to wake up that early if students from his school beats him up? His hand was on his forehead while his body was rooted on his bed. He doesn’t want to get up, he was still lying on his bed and he just wanted to lie down for the whole day. “Atticus?” his father shouted Here he is again. His father always shouted at him, even when he’s near he doesn’t speak gently. It started when his mother died because of a bus accident. “Atticus, are you listening?! Get up, you i***t! I will go out for work! It’s late you need to prepare for school! Don’t waste my money and do your best to finished college!” he shouted, Atticus got up slowly; he took his thick eyeglass and went inside the bathroom. “I left your food at the refrigerator, when someone look for me tell him that I am at work already.  Your uncle Izmo was waiting, I need to hurry.” He brushed his teeth and looked at the mirror. No changes, it’s still him. The weak, Atticus. He wonders what he will go through the hands of the bullies today. When he saw his father he was getting ready for work. Atticus went to the table and look for the heated food. Sweet potato and egg for breakfast for the ninth time. “Stop looking like that and eat what’s on the table. We are not rich; get ready because time was running you will be late for school.” His father was wearing his shoes when he spoke, “I don’t want to go to school anymore, Father” he said. Who would go to school if students were bullying him? He failed twice and needs to go back as a 2nd year college student. His life was a mess at school. Students’ even faculties made fun of him. His father didn’t talk but he walked closer to her and pointed his head. “I am doing everything so that you could finish your study. What you just need to do is to enter the school and pass all your subjects. Don’t make it hard for the both of us, Atticus.” It was hard for him. If he will stop entering school he will look for a job and help his father to earn money. He doesn’t need to finish his study to earn money. “I can earn money and help you even if I didn’t finish my study.” His father slaps him. Atticus’ eyeglass fell on the floor and he immediately takes it. “It is early to argue with you, Atticus. Get ready for school. I am leaving.” After his father said that he went out of their house and he was left alone. Atticus brushed his cheeks and wiped the tears that fell from his eyes. He doesn’t want to go to school because everyone mocks him, they bully him and they treat him like trash. “If only I was born smart, strong and brave no one would do that. They will get my attention and I will have a lot of friends. Who would make friends with a loser?” he told himself Atticus ate the egg and the sweet potato. He needs to obey his father or else he will beat him again if he return and knew he didn’t go to school. Even if it is hard he will still choose to go to school because his father will beat him if he stays at home. After he gets ready Atticus walk to go to his school. He’s studying at the Lind University a school near their house. He was a 2nd year college student taking Business management. He doesn’t have friends at school, no one wanted to talk to him because they’re afraid to get beaten like what always happened to him. While walking Atticus saw an old woman pushing her cart full of trash, he run to help the old woman. “Thank you, Hijo. Your clothes will get dirty, is it okay?” the old woman asked “Yes, it doesn’t matter.” He said “Thank you! You are so kind! Are you going to school?” the old woman asked him Atticus nodded and adjusted his eyeglass. “Yes, I am studying at the Lind University; I am living here at block 4 Maria Street.” “Oh, we are neighbors but I rarely saw you here. Did you came from another city and decided to live here?” she asked Atticus smiled and he adjusted his eyeglass again. That was his mannerism. “I was born at this city, Roka City was my hometown. I just didn’t go out always that’s why people from this city were not familiar of me.” He said “Where are you going to take these trashes, grandma?” he asked the old woman The old woman pointed him the big trash bin at the edge of the road. She told him that she needs to put all the trash inside. “Okay, I will do that for you. These trashes are heavy, is there no one who can help you to do this?” he asked the old woman The old woman smiled and shook her head. “I am living alone, Hijo. My husband died last month because of cancer.”  She said “I am very sad to hear that,” he said while putting all the trash on the trash bin “Do you have children?” he asked the old woman She nodded and looked at the sky “I have children, I have a son and a daughter but they’re not here at the Roka City because they have their own family to be taken care of. They rarely visit me but it’s okay. The fact that they’re living healthy is what matters.”  Atticus suddenly stops from putting the trash on the trash bin. The old woman’s life was so sad because she was living alone. “Don’t give me that sad look, Hijo! I am a strong grandma; my husband taught me how to be strong when this time will come. Before he passed away he taught me the greatest lesson of being alone.” “That, when everything leaves you must not stop your life you must keep moving. Continue to look for the beauty of the world. It will going to be a hard battle being alone but living in this beautiful world was worth it.” She said She is old and she lives alone in this huge city. Atticus smiled and throws all the trash in the trash bin. When he was finished the grandma offered him money. “No, you don’t need to give me money. I am happy to help you, grandma.” He said The old woman patted his head and smiled. “Okay, be careful going to your school. Take care, hijo!” she said When he left Atticus smile vanished and his face was back from being blank. He remembers what the old woman said, “That, when everything leaves you must not stop your life you must keep moving. Continue to look for the beauty of the world. It will going to be a hard battle being alone but living in this beautiful world was worth it.” It is hard to continue when you are alone. He’s not alone but he felt alone and he doesn’t have the strong mind and personality like the old woman... He wished he has.
