Chapter 8   “I saw that you got your new eyeglasses now, Atticus.” His father told him. “Yes papa, thank you for giving money. I can now study well. I am motivated to study because of this.” He said. Atticus put the plates on the table. The he put the bowl of sinigang. He’s happy and he can’t hide it. His smile tells him that he is happy. “Let’s eat, papa.” He said. His father opens the television to watch news. He can’t still believe that they’re eating together again and they are not arguing. Before what happened last night, he and his father never had a good and peaceful meal together because they are always arguing. He remember that time when he tried to open a conversation because he got bullied his father left him and never eats with him again. “Atticus, tomorrow I will not go home, lock the doors and do not let anyone enter the house, do you understand?” his father asked. Atticus nodded at his father. Where is he going then? “Are you going to work again, father?” he asked. His father glanced at him and then looked at the television again. “A bank was robbed and a lot of money was stolen, this happened near the city of Roka last night. We wished everyone’s safety.” “Yes,” his father said. Atticus smiled, soon after he graduate, he will work hard like his father so that he can payback every sacrifices he did just to raise him well and to give him what he needs. “I am done eating, if you are done turn off the television and sleep.” Alfred said. He nodded while finishing his food. When Atticus father goes to his room he looked at the television. A bank was robbed last night? That bank is just near their house. Thankful that no one was harmed during the robbery. A lot of crimes happening lately and Atticus is so afraid to go outside. A while ago a homeless man grabs him on his hand and tells him something creepy, he even mentioned demons. How that hell would demons devour people?   While on his way home Atticus saw a homeless man on the road, the man is asking for alms. Atticus went to the man and when he’s about to give him some bread the man suddenly grabs his arm. Atticus was shocked by the man’s action. “I can see that you will be a good and useful human being… but not here on earth.” The man said. He’s looking directly at him and he got chills when the man’s eyes started to look sharply at him. “You need to follow her, you need to obey her, everything that she will say to you… because if not demons will devour you.” There are no real demons living on earth. Who is that crazy man and what is he talking about? Maybe the demons that he is talking about are the people. Some people killed because of money and you can call them demons for doing that. Money can make you a bad person. “I can say that Dalton is a demon too, he’s doing bad things.” He said and laughed. He needs to prepare himself on Monday, he’s sure Dalton will do something bad on him again. He doesn’t want to look pathetic and he doesn’t want his new eyeglasses to be broken again. He needs to learn how to fight now. He needs to make sure that no student at their school would belittle him again and would bully him. When Atticus cleans the kitchen he goes to his room to read on the internet. Because he was so curious of the homeless man who told him that there are demons that going to devour him if he didn’t listen to ‘her’ he search for demons on the internet. “What… is the… meaning… of… demons?” he said while typing on his cell phone. When Atticus pressed search button on his phone a lot of information appeared and then he click the first one on the list. A demon is a supernatural being, typically associated with evil, prevalent historically in religion, occultism, literature, fiction, mythology, and folklore; as well as in media such as comics, video games, movies, anime, and television series. The original Greek word daimon does not carry negative connotations. He can’t understand what he read; he searched for a simple explanations about demons. “This is so hard to understand, or is it the simple one? And I am just an i***t?” he told himself. When a description appeared again Atticus click it. “I know that demons are bad, but why that homeless man told that it would devour me? Is that true? I mean, I believe in ghosts, but demons here on earth? Is that even possible?” he asked. A demon is usually thought to be a supernatural creature that is an evil spirit. Demons are often described as being summoned by someone, and then either being sent to do works of evil, or to create chaos. "To demonize" means to make someone appear evil. “Being summoned by someone? I should really stop thinking about this. I am being too paranoid. Maybe the homeless man is just crazy and that he’s just talking nonsense things to anyone.” When Atticus turns off his phone he removes his eyeglasses and put it on the case that the doctor gave him. “I don’t want to ruin this day by thinking about Dalton the real demon and what the homeless man told me.” Atticus looked at the picture on his bedside table. He saw the picture on his family, his mom was holding him and his father was behind his mom. They are all smiling at the picture. I wish you are still here mom. He said. Atticus can still recall what happened to his mom. When his father arrived at home he was full of blood. He told him that his mother was at the hospital because she got into an accident. Atticus remembers himself crying so hard asking his father to take him to the hospital to see his mother. But his father left him at home. That was the day when he asked his mother to buy him an icecream, his mother left the house to buy him because he’s crying so hard. His mother doesn’t want to leave him that time but because he said that he wanted an ice cream his mother went outside to buy one. After a few minutes he saw his father’s shirt full of blood. “Papa? Why… what happened? Papa?” he asked. “Atticus, stay here, don’t ask, papa will come home later with mama.” “B-But papa, where is mama? Where is my ice cream?” he asked. “Your mom is at the hospital Atticus! She’s in a critical condition because she got into an accident! She was hit by a car!” Because he’s still little that time Atticus doesn’t fully understand what his father told him, “I want to go! I want to go! I want to be with mama! I want my ice creame!” He wiped his tears. It’s really his fault why his mother died that day. They are playing at their house but because he acted like that and he wanted her mother to buy an ice cream for her she got into an accident and died. “I’m sorry, mama.”
