Alpha University used to be an elite college exclusively for werewolves. Now that humans know about supernatural creatures and want to annihilate them, it's a school for everything that goes bump in the night. Renée is a quirky Louisiana-born French werewolf and a Seule (French for Lone, Seul for men). Seules are rare wolves who are not affected by an alpha's commands. The males are killed immediately, while the females are allowed to live. Being a Seule, they have a calming effect on other werewolves, especially on men, who tend to be more aggressive. This makes them very coveted beings, and it's almost a badge of honor to have one in your pack. All males at the school are trying to win her over because of this. Sir James Knight, who is going to be the Alpha of all Alphas, is claiming the tiny, adorable she-wolf for himself.

Part I
The key turned with a satisfying click, and Renee Beaufort pushed the dorm room door open. Fresh independence wafted through the threshold like an inviting perfume, mingling with the scent of old books and a tang of lemon cleaner. Her heart hammered a wild but exhilarating rhythm. Here, in this nondescript room with cinder block walls and furniture that had seen better days, she was finally free. The room was small but cozy, with two twin beds pushed against opposite walls and desks nestled under the windows. Renee noted the faded blue comforters and the slightly scuffed wooden floors, signs of the many students who had called this place home before her. "Hey! You must be Renee." The voice, warm and welcoming, drew Renee's gaze to her new roommate. Sarah Knight stood by the window, sunlight casting a halo around her chestnut hair. She offered a smile that reached her eyes—eyes the same familiar shade of amber that spoke of shared secrets and moonlit transformations. "Sarah," Renee returned the smile, finding an immediate kinship in that gaze. Their handshake turned into a hug, natural, as if reuniting with a long-lost sister. As they parted, Renee's elation dimmed under the shadow of a deep-seated fear. If Sarah ever learned what she truly was—a Seule, not bound by pack laws or alpha commands—she might recoil in horror. Males of her kind were exterminated on sight, dangerous relics of an era when they were weapons against enemy alphas. But females like Renee—she shivered—they were allowed life, so long as they played their role as pacifiers, soothing the aggressive tendencies of their male counterparts. "Sorry about the mess!" Sarah gestured at the half-unpacked boxes strewn about her side of the room. "I'm a bit of a whirlwind." "Looks like home to me," Renee joked, setting down her single duffel bag. "Freshman year is so exciting," Sarah said, sitting cross-legged on her bed, her voice tinged with a trace of awe. "Took a whole extra year to convince Dad to let me come here." "Your dad didn't want you to go to college?" Renee asked, unpacking a few clothes, folding them meticulously before placing them in the dresser. "Alpha issues," Sarah replied with a shrug. "He's the Head Alpha, super protective. But my twin brother, he started last year. Once he settled in, Dad couldn't really say no to me any longer." Sarah's words hinted at her omega status within the pack hierarchy, a position that often came with its own set of challenges and expectations. Renee couldn't help but wonder how Sarah navigated the complex dynamics of her family and pack. "Sounds complicated," Renee murmured, thinking of her own family entanglements she'd left behind. "Tell me about it," Sarah laughed—a soft, melodic sound that filled the small space. "But now I'm here. We're both here!" Their gazes met again, two young wolves on the brink of something new, something undefined but brimming with potential. Renee felt the connection, potent and unspoken, and for a moment, the fear ebbed away. Here with Sarah, maybe, just maybe, she could be herself. As they continued to unpack and chat, a comfortable camaraderie settled between them. Renee learned that Sarah was studying art history, a passion she'd pursued despite her father's initial skepticism. In turn, Renee shared her love for biology and her dream of becoming a veterinarian. They bonded over their shared excitement and apprehension about the journey ahead, the challenges they would face as werewolves in a predominantly human world. The afternoon slipped by, filled with laughter and stories, until a series of sharp, insistent knocks echoed against the wooden door of the dorm room. Renee glanced over as Sarah sighed deeply, her usually bright eyes dimming a notch. "Here we go," she muttered, rising to answer the volley of raps. "Hey, Sarah!" The voices chimed in unison, syrupy sweet, as a trio of girls streamed in without waiting for an invitation. They were all smiles, their eyes flickering around the room, but not to admire the half-unpacked chaos—they sought signs of the absent twin brother. "Love what you've done with the place," one cooed, her gaze finally landing on Sarah. It was a poorly veiled attempt at camaraderie, and Sarah's smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Thanks," Sarah replied, her tone flat. She turned slightly, positioning herself like a shield before her own belongings. "Just getting settled." "Is James coming by later?" another girl asked, a hint of eagerness betraying her casual facade. Her fingers twisted a lock of hair around, a nervous tic perhaps, or a calculated move of flirtation. "Couldn't tell you," Sarah said, crossing her arms. The gesture seemed small, submissive even, but Renee noticed a certain steeliness in her posture. The girls exchanged glances, their smiles faltering. Their mission was transparent, and the air grew thick with unsaid words and feigned interest. "Must be nice, having him here on campus though," the third girl piped up, attempting to salvage the conversation. "You know, looking out for his little sister and all." Sarah's lips twitched, a ghost of a smirk that suggested she knew the game far too well. "I can look after myself," she said quietly. Renee caught the subtle shift in Sarah's scent—a touch of defiance that belied her omega status. "Of course," the girl backpedaled. "We just thought—" "Thought what?" Sarah challenged softly, holding her ground. "Nothing." The word came out rushed, a white flag raised in hurried retreat. With awkward goodbyes, the girls filed out, leaving behind a silence that buzzed with unspoken truths. "Sorry about that," Sarah murmured, sinking back onto her bed. "It's always the same. They don't really want to know me. Just... him." Renee nodded, understanding the burden of expectations. In a world where lineage defined you, Sarah fought an invisible battle—one Renee recognized all too well. She watched as Sarah's shoulders slumped slightly, a weariness settling in that belied her young age. It pained Renee to see the bright spark in Sarah's eyes dimmed by the constant overshadowing presence of her brother. James Knight, the alpha of all alphas, loomed large over their lives, casting a long shadow that seemed to stretch even into this tiny dorm room. "You don't deserve that," Renee said softly, moving to sit beside Sarah on the bed. She placed a comforting hand on Sarah's arm, the touch grounding and warm. Sarah turned to look at Renee, her amber eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "It's just... hard sometimes. I love my brother, but I wish they could see me for me." "They will," Renee assured her, conviction ringing in her voice. "You're strong, Sarah. Stronger than you know. And you have me now. We'll face this together." Sarah smiled then, a genuine, grateful smile that chased away the shadows in her eyes. "Thank you," she whispered, leaning into Renee's embrace. As they sat there, two werewolves finding solace in each other's presence, Renee felt a flicker of hope ignite within her. Maybe, just maybe, she'd found more than a roommate in Sarah. Maybe she'd found a true friend, someone who could understand and accept her, Seule status and all. The future stretched out before them, uncertain but filled with promise. And for the first time in a long while, Renee allowed herself to believe that she could find her place in this world—a place where she could be herself, without fear or pretense. With Sarah by her side, anything seemed possible. Together, they would navigate the challenges of college life, the complexities of pack dynamics, and the ever-present threat of discovery. Together, they would forge their own paths, write their own stories. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the room in a warm, golden glow, Renee and Sarah talked late into the night, their laughter and whispered confidences a balm to old wounds and a promise of brighter days to come.
