Chapter 10 Cover Up The Incident

At the president’s office. Scarlett seethed silently at the clock on the wall again. Though she already knew that what kind of a person Marlow was and she didn’t expect him to come to work on time, but she couldn’t help being annoyed that he didn’t show up even at ten o’clock. It was not possible for Marlow to know Scarlett’s mind. He was now being stopped by the security guards at the gate. The guards looked at him as if he was an imbecile. They asked inside, ‘Man, are you coming for a free lunch?’ “Please show us your work ID.” “I don’t have. It’s my first day of work.” “Okay, then please call the person in the HR department who contacted you. Their confirmation will serve the same.” Though they were suspicious about Marlow’s words, they were polite at first and didn’t ridicule him as they did in their mind. They just made some reasonable requests. “I don’t know anyone in the HR department,” replied Marlow. “You should know who hired you, don’t you?” The tone started to be impatient. “Your big boss asked me to come to work today,” said Marlow, shrugging his shoulders. Hearing that, the guards stopped looking at him as looking at an imbecile, but at a psycho. ‘Did you leave your brain at home, man? Would you make up some more plausible excuse?’ ‘Ms. Murphy is the goddess in this company. She asked you personally to come to work and you look as if you are not willing to. Who do you expect to believe your bragging?’ At this moment, the fatty had already picked himself up and chased Marlow here. When he said Marlow entangled with the guards, he came alive. He shouted at the guards in a loud voice, “Guys, catch him! This bastard beat me in the parking lot. I have to beat the crap out of him!” The guards had already been suspicious about Marlow’s identity. The messy look of the fat guy confirmed their suspicion. So they surrounded Marlow immediately. In fact, the fat guy didn’t have much popularity in the company. The security guards all hated him. But he was the company’s people, even if they didn’t want to help him beat that stranger, of course they wouldn’t let that stranger get into the building. The fat guy was now standing in front of the guards and Marlow panting. He knew he wasn’t Marlow’s rival in fighting. So he shouted at the guards, “What does the company pay you for? Decoration? Couldn’t you see that I am beaten by that guy? Beat him! I will take responsibility whatever happens.” The guards of course wouldn’t beat a stranger without reason, but they were afraid of the fat guy. He was a senior manager of the company. In the hierarchy of the company, he was at the top of the pilgrim while they were at the bottom. They wouldn’t offend him unless they wanted to look for another job. So the one who looked like the chief of the guards put on a smile and said flatteringly, “Mr. Jones, we can’t beat him without reason. If he did beat you, we can help you call the police. Don’t worry. We won’t let him run away!” The fat guy was furious at his words. He shouted to them arrogantly, “What’s the use of calling the police? Do you think they would care about such a little thing? You are a bunch of good-for-nothings! The company wastes money on…” Even Marlow couldn’t endure the way he talked to the guards. He could tell from the postures of the guards that they were veterans. So he walked a step closer to the fat guy, pointed at him and said, “Hey, pig head, do you think they are the servants in your house and you have right to order them to do this and do that? I pulled my punches just now. I should have knocked your teeth in so that you wouldn’t be able to demonstrate your power here. Come, fatty, let’s fight alone.” The guards felt happy secretly. They wished Marlow would beat the crap out of the fat guy. However, they couldn’t allow this to really happen. Otherwise, they would all be given the sack. So when Marlow approached the fat guy, the guards stopped him in time. They soon tangled with each other. The fat guy quickly backed off and kept some distance from them. He only dared to make some verbal attack against Marlow. Marlow shouted back at him and he ran away as quickly as a rabbit. Marlow didn’t want to chase him, but the problem was he couldn’t get into the building now. The guards wouldn’t let him get in at any cost. Finally, maybe he impressed the guards by the way he treated the fat guy, the chief guard said, “Pal, don’t get vexed. I’ll make some calls to check, okay?”   In a big company like Watson Group, the president naturally didn’t just have one secretary. There was a department called the president’s office. The staff of this office helped the president handle different specific work of the company. The staff in this office who was in charge of security was an amiable middle-aged man called Jacob Lawson. He was amiable partly because his work pressure was relatively light compared to the selling department or research & development department. When he received the call from the chief guard, his first reaction was that it was not possible. A goddess-like president would personally invite a hooligan to come to work? And this guy beat up Mr. Jones the first day he came to work. As the chief guard reported that the guy wouldn’t leave, Jacob finally said, “Okay, you wait a minute. I will call to ask.” After he put down the phone, he went to Scarlett’s secretary Lina Shaw’s office and knocked on the door gingerly. When Lina showed up at the door, Jacob asked with a smile, “Lina, the guards at the gate said that there was a young man called Marlow Williams who claimed that the president asked him to come to work today.” Lina pressed her lips down and murmured, “What time is it now? Came to work at this hour.” Then she smiled politely at Jacob and said, “Yes, I know him. I’ll go down now. Well, Mr. Lawson, please inform the people there not to spread this information. Ms. Murphy doesn’t want too many people to know about this.” “Okay, no problem.” Jacob nodded hurriedly. His heart was beating fast. It was lucky that he came to ask Lina.   After Lina left the office, Jacob sneaked to a secluded corner like a thief and took out his phone to call the chief guard.   The chief guard was shocked too. ‘Sh*t! This guy is somebody!’ He had been around before. When he heard that the president wanted to keep this secret, he realized that this guy wasn’t an unimportant person. After he hung up the phone, he tried to pretend calm and said to Marlow, “Why didn’t you tell us earlier that you are coming to install the anti-virus program for the president? You behaved mysteriously and caused so much unnecessary misunderstanding. Come with me.” After he said that, he pranced ahead, leading Marlow to the building.   After they walked through the revolving door and were alone, he put on a smile immediately and thumbed up at Marlow. “Pal, you are a big shot. We start working at eight o’clock and you came at eleven o’clock. The boss had seen you personally. I won’t ask you what relations you have with the boss. But I want to ask you if I was smart or not just now? As soon as I heard that the boss wouldn’t let others know about this, more than one hundred plans to handle this matter popped up in my mind, but I decided in a tenth of a second…” Marlow hemmed and hawed to muddle through while the chief guard bragged. He understood that Scarlett didn’t want to let others know the relations between him and her. This lady wouldn’t let him have an easy time in the company.
