Chapter 9 First Day Of Work

1591 Words
At the police chief’s office, Starlake City Police Division. Francis Burney pointed his finger at Fiona angrily and reprimanded her, “You are very capable now. You took out the gun to point at a common passerby in the public. What did you want? Do you think the city is not messy enough? Does our police division have not enough trouble?” Francis was going mad. Since he got up this morning, his left eye had been twitching. It gave him the willies as he thought it was a bad sign. He waited for a whole day but nothing happened. Just as he was going to call it superstition and got off from work, the telephones in the office all rang at the same time. That event had already shocked his boss. A lot of people called to report how Fiona Torres caught a thief. She pointed her gun at a young passerby who helped her bravely! “I’m sorry, Chief. I didn’t do it on purpose. It’s just that bastard is hateful!” Fiona still wouldn’t admit that she was wrong. Francis was even angrier now. He smacked his hand down on the table and roared, “How hateful is he? How bad can a passerby who helped you catch a thief be? After you behaved like that in public, how can you expect the civilians to stand on the side of the police? Even if he wasn’t as nice as you expected, can it justify your pointing a gun at him? You are a policewoman, not a gangster! Do you know what influence this incident has on the public?” “But he looked very good at fighting. He isn’t a common person. I suspect…” Fiona tried to defend herself. “Ah-ha! He is good at fighting! Is that an acceptable excuse? Did he hurt you? Or did he hurt the people around? Next time you meet Jackie Chan, shall you just shoot him?” After he said this, he waved his arm impatiently. “It’s six o’clock now. I don’t have time to listen to your excuses. Give me a report on what happened today. All facts should be included. Now, you get out of my office.” Fiona said nothing and walked out of his room depressed. She understood it was a vain attempt to explain herself. That guy helped her catch a thief. That gave him a halo. Everyone would think he was a hero and she was making a fuss about something unimportant. The more she thought about it, the more she hated Marlow. That bastard was too cunning. In fact, Francis wasn’t as mad at Fiona as he looked. But he had to warn his men through this incident. Fiona was young. She just got promoted lately. She was vigorous and aggressive. Some people were jealous of her and couldn’t endure her. Especially now that they saw the beautiful Fiona became the captain of the criminal police team, they started to spread rumors. For what happened today, if he didn’t punish Fiona himself, he would give those people ammunition to stir up trouble. Francis was an old friend of Fiona’s father Daniel Torres. It was natural for him to take care of this bold and reckless girl of his friend.  “Been criticized?” Seeing Fiona finally come out from the chief’s office, Chad came up and asked with a grimace. “If you say one more word, I will send you to hell!” snapped Fiona and gave him an angry glare. She happened to need to vent her anger. She couldn’t show her emotion in front of the chief, but she could take it out on Chad. Chad turned dispirited immediately at what she said. He was a big guy, but he seemed so small in front of Fiona. Indeed, in terms of fighting, in the whole division, nobody could beat this beautiful policewoman except Francis. It was said that she beat her fighting teacher in police school. Though she was too masculine and too aggressive, Chad still loved her very much. He was willing to be bullied by her for the rest of his life. “Well,” Chad scratched the back of his head and said nervously, “I just want to invite you to have dinner.” “No, thank you.” She turned him down without a second of hesitation and walked outward. After Fiona disappeared from Chad’s view, Chad’s assistant came over and flattered him with his thumb up, “Chad, I admire you. You dare to take the bull by the horns. It’s the most dangerous mission to court this woman, you know. I believe you have a true love for her.” “Get lost! Can’t you find anything to do? Then go to Beauty Salon Street to crack down on prostitution. I’ve heard that they got a lot of new young girls. Probably they are eager to see you, the pretty boy Sean Lewis of the vice squad.” Sean shut up immediately at his words and slipped away. The mentioning of Beauty Salon Street hit home. He led the vice squad to Beauty Salon Street once and a procuress fell in love with him desperately at the first sight of him. After that, in order to see him, she did business openly, just hoping that she would be arrested by him so that she could see him again. That made Sean very embarrassed. … The sun had already risen to the middle of the sky and the buzz of traffic outside could be heard, but Marlow was still sleeping. When he finally reached out for his cell phone and took a glance at it hazily, he was totally awake, because the time showed that it was already ten o’clock. Was it Sunday today? Was she still sleeping? No, it was Tuesday today. Then why didn’t she wake him up to go to work? He got out of bed and got dressed quickly. Then he ran to the sitting room and called out to her room. But nobody replied to him. He was frustrated. She went to work without asking him to go together. Would it kill her if she gave him a ride with her Cayenne? He washed up quickly and went downstairs to drive his second-hand Jetta to work. When he bought this car, his parents were so excited. In their eyes, they had a house and a car. Their happy life would become better and better. However, the happiness didn’t last long. The first year he served in the army, his father had an accident and died. The next year, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and went to the hospital. He wanted to sell the car, but his mother wouldn’t let him. She wanted to keep it for him. According to his mother, she was going to die anyway. She didn’t want to ruin her son's life. So though they were in debt, he kept the house and the car in the end. Recalling his mother, he felt sad. His mother was ordinary but also great. His mother’s death was a wound in his heart that would never heal. Now he was alone in this world. After thinking for a while, he collected himself and started the car. About fourteen minutes later, he could see the magnificent tower Watson Building soar to the sky in the distance. This was the second time he came here. And it was the first time he drove a car here. He didn’t know the rules of the parking lot. So he parked his car on the first empty parking spot. As soon as he got out of his car and was heading to the door of the building, a BMW stopped right in front of him. A big head poked out of the window and shouted to him, “Hey, kid. Who are you? Do you know the rules here? Don’t you know that this is my spot? Move your broken Jetta somewhere else. It’s an eyesore to the city.” Usually, he would move his car away if he parked in other people’s parking spots. But the way that guy talked to him irritated him so much that he wouldn’t follow his order. So without taking another glance at him, he just went on walking. “Hey! I am talking to you! Did you hear me? Stop! Are you looking for death? Do you know who I am? …” That bald fat guy got out of his car and chased Marlow up, reached his hand for Marlow’s shoulder to stop him. Marlow turned around slightly and grabbed him by his arm and threw him over his own shoulder. That guy landed the concrete floor on his back heavily with a thud. Marlow bent down and looked at his face, padded his cheek and said, “Fatty, let me tell you: If you dare to touch my car, I will make you an eyesore to the city.” After he finished his words, he ignored him and walked straight to the door of the building.
