Chapter 17 Ned Snape

1552 Words
Yolanda was a veteran in the workplace, while as Scarlett had told her, Marlow was just a glib newbie. So she decided not to fight with him verbally so that she wouldn’t be pissed to death. When she saw Marlow come to her department, she didn’t reveal her excitement or complacency, nor did she ridicule him. She just put on a professional cold face and asked him some common questions about his education and work history. And then she asked her assistant Shirley White to deal with him. Shirley was a lusty cute girl. She was a sharp contrast from Lina who was cold and aloof. Shirley looked quiet and obedient in front of Yolanda, but with other people, she was cheerful and childish. “Wow, you are awesome! You even dared to touch Yolanda’s boobs. The greatest thing is that you are not punished after you touched her. It’s a big deal! Well, how did her boobs feel? Are you Scarlett’s relative? You know, people say that you are a kept man of Scarlett. Do you know what a kept man is? A toyboy, in other words. In the royal family, the queen or the princess might have toy boys…Of course in modern time, probably they dare not act so unruly…Instead, in Hollywood, some famous female stars might have a number of boyfriends who are as young as their son, if they happen to have a son. But I am not sure if we can call their boyfriends kept men or toyboys...” The girl’s imagination ran wild and she talked as if she didn’t care whether the listener was listening to her or not. She jumped from one topic to another. Marlow couldn’t help but smile. One was chattering happily on and on and another was listening with interest quietly. They soon arrived at the 6th sales team, where Yolanda assigned Marlow to work in. Shirley knocked on the door out of curtsey and then opened the door and walked in. As soon as she walked through the door, she turned into a graceful and serious lady again. She introduced Marlow to the people there. “Hi, everyone. This is our new colleague, Marlow Williams. He will be a member of your sales team from now on. Hope you can help him with his work when he need it.” The people in that sales team had various reactions. Some greeted him and some exclaimed, “My god, it’s you! I admire you only in this company. You just harassed our boss and then you came to work under her. You are really capable.” Some appeared to be cold as if Marlow was invisible. They took a swift glance at him and then returned to their work. After the introduction, Shirley pointed at an empty desk and said, “You sit here first. Your chief went out for business today. I will introduce you to him later.” As Shirley led him to the empty desk, the girl who sat at the neighboring desk came over to help him fix the things on the desk. Shirley pointed at that girl and said to Marlow, “Playboy, I have to warn you in advance. Don’t try to lay your hands on Daisy. She is my best friend. I won’t let you get away with it if you hurt my Daisy.” As she said, she hugged Daisy’s shoulder to show that they were good friends. This cute and lovely round-faced girl wasn’t as out-going as Shirley. She blushed at Shirley’s words and beat Shirley with her fist gently. She said, “Bigmouth, don’t talk nonsense!” Then she turned to Marlow shyly and said, “Hello. My name is Daisy Lavin. Nice to meet you.” Marlow liked her as she looked shy and clumsy. She had her own style of charm. Marlow felt as if she was a little sister who lived next door to his house. So he replied especially amiably, “Nice to meet you too. I’m a newbie here and don’t know anything about the work. Please help me get acquainted with my work, Daisy.” “Sure.” Daisy nodded repeatedly like a chicken eating rice on the ground. As they were talking, the door was opened and a young man came in. When he saw them, he shouted arrogantly, “What? Don’t you have enough work to do? As soon as I go out, you stay together and gossip. Are you paid to gossip here?” The other guys went back to their seats as quickly as a mouse seeing a cat. They bent down over the paper on their desk and pretended to be working seriously. “Ha, Shirley, you are here. Did you miss me, Shirley?” When he saw Shirley, that flamboyant man went over to her with an obscene smile. “Yes, I missed you very much. I even dreamed of you last night,” Shirley said with a poker face. “Really? Did you dream of us falling in love with each other?” “No, I dreamed that you ran over by a car and mangled beyond recognition before you fell into a river. But that didn’t kill you. You are as tenacious as a cockroach. I had to carry a big rock and throw it at you to kill you. The rock was as big as this printer. And your head was smashed into meat paste.” Shirley was almost as glib as Marlow when she wanted. The man’s face turned as dark as the sky before a rainstorm after hearing her words. But Shirley was the assistant of Yolanda. He could do nothing to her. So he took it out on Daisy. He shouted at Daisy, “What’s so funny? Have you finished the report? Being so lazy in your probation period, don’t you want to work here?” The cute little girl was scared to death. She rummaged through the pile of paper on her desk and handed a form to that man gingerly. Seeing this, Shirley shouted at that man, “Don’t be so domineering! Ms. Edison asked you to go to her office. She said she had waited for you for half a day and wanted to know where you messed around with an excuse of going out on business. You’re stinking of alcohol.” “Yes, I’m stinking of alcohol. So what? Do you want to eat me?” Realizing that he couldn’t get what he wanted from that girl, he snapped fiercely. “Humph. I don’t want to have anything to do with you. Well, let me introduce a new colleague to you. He is going to work in your team. His name is Marlow Williams. Ms. Edison asked you to take care of him.” That guy squinted at Marlow and said with disdain, “Is the HR department so desperate now that they dragged anyone they saw on the street into this company? What do they expect such a lummox to be able to do? Somebody has to tell them to recruit a couple of smart and cute little girls instead.” He seemed not interested in hearing answers to his question and turned to go to his private office. After he left, Shirley said to Marlow with a lowered voice, “This bastard’s name is Ned Snape. He is the chief of the team. A recognized scum. You have to be wary of him.” “Okay, thank you, Shirley,” said Marlow with a smile. Shirley said goodbye to him and went back to her office. As soon as she left, Ned came out of his office. He shouted at everyone there, “Everyone work harder, or I will let you know the consequence.” And then he swaggered out of the office and went upstairs to see Yolanda. In every company, there was someone who the boss hated but had to use. Marlow was someone Scarlett had to use, and Ned was Yolanda hated but had to use. The sales department had seven sales teams and Ned was the chief of the sixth team. His character was nasty and he had very complicated social connections. He knew a lot of powerful people from both decent social circles and gangsters. And he was a relative of a shareholder of the company. Of course this wasn’t the essential reason that he was kept in the company. He was here mainly because his sales performance was remarkable. The sales of his team were over a half of the whole department every month. For this reason, he maintained his position in the company and acted arrogantly. “Ms. Edison, it’s me, Ned.” When Yolanda heard him knocking on the door and speaking outside, Yolanda twisted her mouth because she felt sick. But she knew that she had to make him complete the task for her.
