Chapter 18 Smart Big Brother

1512 Words
“Ned, you did a good job lately, but there is still room for improvement. Somebody reported that you have dubious relationships with some female colleagues. You have to be a good example for your team. You are the leader. You have to be stricter on yourself.” Yolanda’s gorge rose when she said those words. A dubious relationship was just a mild term to save his face. The fact was he harassed female colleagues. No sane woman would have a dubious relationship with him. “That is slander, Ms. Edison! I’m a decent man and have never messed around with female colleagues. The only possibility is that because I’m too handsome, some female colleagues take a fancy to me secretly. I’ll be watchful since you mentioned that.” Yolanda pressed her lips down. She could hardly control the expression on her face. The guy had a face that looked like a shoehorn upside down, a hooked big chin, a pair of eyes as small as mung beans and a big nose full of acne. Any average person could be said as Adonis compared to him. “Okay, keep the good record if you haven’t done anything wrong. Anyway, don’t give others ammunition to attack you.” Yolanda waved her hand to stop this sickening topic and came straight to the point. “A new colleague is arranged to work in your team. He is an excellent young man, not only smart but also an all-rounder. Such kind of a talented young man is rare. I hope he can be an asset to our department after some training. So you have to teach him and help him get hold of the work asap…” Yolanda did all she could to praise Marlow as if he a genius. She did it on purpose as she knew too well of Ned. This scum would never allow anyone under him to steal his thunder. Some capable people came to their team before, but whenever this scum found that they did a better job than him, he would try to put them down. Finally, the capable people either switched to other teams or resigned. Yolanda knew that her praising Marlow to the skies would make this scum bear grudge against him. A dog-eat-dog situation was just what she wanted to see. Another favorable thing to her was that Ned was out today and he didn’t know what happened in the canteen. He had no idea that Marlow was a big shot here. As Ned was a nuisance in the company and almost nobody would start a conversation with him voluntarily, it was hardly possible that someone would tell him about the heroic doings of Marlow. That would make him unscrupulous in challenging the man even the big boss dared not to fire. “Sure, I will. Please be assured…” Ned’s mung-bean-like eyes fixed on Yolanda’s cleavage and his mouth was almost watering as he replied in a perfunctory way. Since she had said what she had to say, she didn’t want to keep him for an extra second. She waved her hand at him to signal him to leave as if to get rid of a nasty blowfly. After Ned went back to the 6th sales team, he stood at the door for a moment staring at Marlow with grim eyes. In the end, he said nothing and walked back into his small office. He had to find an excuse to give him a hard time. So he had to wait. His office had a big window from which he could see the people of his team. He had the glass attached to one kind of film that he could see through from inside while others couldn’t see through from outside so that he could watch them freely. Marlow knew Ned wasn’t a decent man when he saw him for the first time, but he didn’t know what exactly Ned was capable of doing. He asked Daisy questions about the company and his job from time to time. The timid and kind Daisy was scared but she couldn’t refuse to tell him. Her heart jumped to her mouth when she answered Marlow’s question. Soon the consequence she worried about came. When Marlow asked her a question about a product of their company, the door of Ned’s office swung open and Ned showed up at the door. He pointed at Marlow and barked at him like a dog, “You, newbie, don’t you know the rules here? No gossiping during office hours!”  “I just came to this company and am not familiar with the products. Can’t I ask the colleagues?” Marlow raised his eyebrows and retorted. “No! The company wants you to have the ability to work independently. Don’t expect others to tell you everything. We don’t want a good-for-nothing!” Marlow gave him a gloomy glare and said nothing. It was a disgrace to argue with such a person. “And you, Daisy, he doesn’t know the rules because he is new, but don’t you know the rules either? I haven’t seen you do your own job so well, but I have seen you have a hand in everything that violates the company regulations. Look at the table you just gave me. There are a lot of mistakes in it. You come to my office now!” “Yes,” said the poor Daisy with a low voice. She dared not disobey him and had to wring her hands, dragged her feet to his office. She was afraid of going in there, but she had to. So she took a long time walking the few feet of distance. “Shut the door and come over here,” ordered Ned, rotating his big swivel chair. Daisy’s lips trembled but made no sound. She shut the door behind her silently. “Come here, don’t waste time. Look at this table. These columns are all wrong,” snapped Ned. The fact was as soon as this cute little girl came to his team, he had a crush on her. But as a veteran lady-killer, he knew that this girl was as timid and shy as a sparrow. He had to take it slow and not to scare her; otherwise, she would keep a distance from him. He wanted to dispel her vigilance and waited for the best opportunity to conquer her. But he thought the opportunity today was good. “Which numbers are wrong? No…Don’t…Mr. Snape!” Daisy was as scared as a frightened little bird and retreated to a corner of the room as soon as Ned reached his claws to her. “Haha, you cute little rabbit. Just give yourself to me today. Don't you want to make more money for your devilish mother’s chemotherapy?” “Don’t insult my mother!” The rabbit was furious but she could only clench her fists and didn’t have the courage to fight back. “Okay, okay. She might be my mother-in-law in the future. Daisy, I love you genuinely. If you sleep with me, I will promote you to be the vice chief of the team. Your basic salary will be at least…” Ned paid lip-service as he approached Daisy. “No, please, Mr. Snape, don’t come over!” “Don’t fight against your will, baby.” With an obscene smile, he grabbed Daisy’s hands. “Ah!” Bang! At the critical moment, the timid little rabbit forgot her fear and struggled. She couldn’t get free from Ned’s arms but she pushed the printer on the desk down to the floor. The sound was big and everyone outside heard it. Most of the people sighed and shook their heads. Some looked indifferent. None did anything. But Marlow took action. He raised his voice and shouted, “Hello, Ms. Edison. You want to see Mr. Snape? …” Ned heard him from inside and got scared. He let go of Daisy immediately. Daisy took the chance ran out of his room crying. “Oh, you don’t want to see Mr. Snape. You just walked by our team. Okay, see you.” Marlow waved his hand to an invisible person enthusiastically. In the end, he turned his head back and shrugged his shoulders at Ned, made a grimace. Everyone couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Ned’s shoehorn face became longer. He pointed at Marlow and clenched his teeth, as if he was saying, “You wait, boy!” “Sure, just come at me.” Marlow’s expression delivered this message to him.
