Chapter 6 The Past

With that thought in her mind, she changed her expression and said, “Even if you own the house, I can still live here.” Marlow just wanted to open his mouth when Scarlett continued, “Since you mentioned ‘future wife’ just now, I have to tell that as your fiancée, of course I have the right to live here.”  “Are you regarding me as your toyboy? Didn’t you just tell me that you would rather die than marrying me this morning? Why should I let you stay at my house? Go, get out of my sight. Don’t make me use force,” Marlow said with a serious expression.  “Are you a man? Do you know how to talk to a lady?”  “It depends on what kind of ladies they are. For a lioness like you, I’m being too gentlemanly. Come, pack your things and leave. Or I will call the police and tell them you trespassing on private property.”  “I won’t leave. What you can do to me?” Seeing that the guy wouldn’t compromise, she decided to throw a tantrum.  “What can I do to you? I have one thousand ways to do to you.” Marlow extinguished the cigarette and walked towards Scarlett with an obscene expression.  “What are you doing? If you come closer, I will scream!” Scarlett was panic this time.  “Go ahead and scream! I will see who will come to help you. I can have s*x with my fiancée. Even if you call the police, they will tell you that it’s legal.” As he said, he walked two steps closer.  “You bastard! You guys work together to bully me. Because of you, my dad kicked me out of the villa and lent it to others. My bank accounts are frozen. And you treat me this way. You are a beast!” She bent down on the back of the sofa and started to cry out loud. In fact, Marlow was just trying to scare her. He didn’t expect that she would cry. Today was the first day they met and he had made her cry twice. It wasn’t very gentlemanly.  “Look at you! Why would you cry again? All right. I will let you stay here.” Marlow rubbed his nose as if he was embarrassed. Hearing that he agree that she could stay, Scarlett calmed down. She didn’t say anything until Marlow said something to comfort her for a couple of minutes. And then she lifted her head and wiped away her tears and said, “Okay. Then you leave here. Bye.”  “Sh*t! Miss Murphy, don’t be so ungrateful. I took you in and then you kicked me out? Where can I live then? This is my house!” Hearing him say that, Scarlett couldn’t help but burst out laughing too. She said shyly, “Okay…then we can share the house, but we have to write an agreement. After all, it’s inconvenient for a single woman to live together with a single man in one small house.”  “Agreement goes to hell! We are going to get married. Why don’t we just try if we are suitable for each other?” Marlow suggested with an evil smile.  “Don’t dream about it! I’d rather sleep on the street then,” said Scarlett in a stern tone and stood up.  “You are boring. All right. I was just kidding you. Go ahead and draw an agreement. Write whatever you like. I thought I was going to have a wife, not a mother.” As he spoke, he stood up and walked towards the door.  “Where are you going?”  “Find some woman I can sleep with.”  “Bastard!” After he came to the street, he slowed down his steps. He took out his wallet and bought a pack of cigarettes in a shop. He held one in his mouth and lit it. He took a long drag and puffed the smoke out slowly. His movements were natural and smooth as if the cigarette had already part of his body. The red glow at the end of the cigarette moved when he flicked away the ash. What was gone with the ash was also his past. He breathed in the loneliness and puffed out the sadness… After he finished the cigarette, he lifted his head to look at the pitch-dark sky. He smiled bitterly and shook his head as he murmured, “Three years have passed. Time flies.” After he strolled for a short while, he saw a broad street with busy traffic. On the opposite side of the street, there was a huge construction site where the workers were working day and night. He sighed faintly at the sight. Everything had changed. It was a serene community with small roads and alleys before. Though it was disorganized and perhaps not as clean as it was now, t was nice in Marlow’s memory.   He was young then and had to walk along this road to school every day. His mother used to walk with him until they reached the cross, and then they separated. He walked straight to the school, while his mother turned left to go to the market to buy food and supplies. Sometimes he turned back after he walked quite a long way, but whenever he turned back, he could always see his mother still standing at the cross watching him. But now… Besides his mother, in his memory, there was a little girl who had a ponytail and always wore a white dress. Those images would never be tarnished in his memory. He wondered where she was and how she was doing now. But he soon put aside that thought and laughed it off. Since when had he become so sentimental? Something in your life if you miss, you will never see it again. Feeling wistful was useless. Thinking of this, with a flick of his fingers, he threw the cigarette end into the dust bin a few feet away. He decided to walk around some more before going back. He had been away for three years. There were huge changes in his hometown.  “There is a piggy named Pappa. She is four years old. She lives with her papa, mama and her younger brother George…” As Marlow just wanted to lift his leg and walk, a gentle and lovely voice came to his ears. He turned stiff as if he was struck by lightning. He turned around with extremely slow speed. What came into his view was a woman in a light-color suit who walked towards him on the sidewalk. She was holding the hand of an adorable little girl who looked as if she just walked out of a comic book. Marlow was struck dumb. Even after ten thousand years, he wouldn’t have forgotten her. He couldn’t make a mistake. That was her! Marlow, who had been through life and death numerous times, now looked deadly pale and droplets of sweat were welling on his forehead. His mind went blank In the past four years, he had imagined countless possible occasions of their meeting, but he didn’t expect to see her so soon. He was always confident and at ease in front of any woman, but now he totally had no clues how to react. He opened his mouth and wanted to call her name, but he lost his voice. He didn’t know how to face her, and he was afraid to see the sadness in her eyes.  “Four years old? She is as old as me,” said the little girl, blinking her big blue eyes. Her small round face blushed with excitement. But soon she was down and said, “Pappa has her dad. But why wouldn’t my dad come back? Does he not want us anymore?”  “No. Your dad has to work to earn money. After you grow older, he will…” replied the woman and pushed her hair to the back of her ear habitually when she suddenly caught sight of Marlow who was going to avoid them. Suddenly, her eyes widened as if she couldn’t believe what she had seen. After making sure he was the man she knew, she pressed her hand on her chest and squatted down. Her originally peaceful face twisted with pain. By instinct, Marlow wanted to rush up to hug her. But the little girl stopped him. She was scared by her mother’s movement and burst out crying. She reached out her arms to hug her mother’s neck and cried out, “Mom, Mom, what’s wrong with you? I’m scared.”  ‘Mom?!’ The little girl’s cry made Marlow freeze.  ‘Is she…married? What’s the point for me to show up again?’
