Chapter 7 Khitan People

1536 Words
As Marlow was hesitating, the woman had already resumed her composure. She wiped off the tears on her daughter’s cheeks and comforted her, “Mom is okay now. I just felt terrible for a short while. Let’s go.” Then she stood up and led her daughter past Marlow as if he was invisible. Marlow’s eyes followed their backs until they disappeared in the distance. He felt his heart had been torn apart. But who could he blame for this? Maybe this was his fate. He stayed there smoked two cigarettes before he could pacify his mood. After the encounter, Marlow lost his interest in sight-seeing. He turned around and went back home. He wanted to take a shower and go to sleep. He didn’t realize that the lock of the door had been changed until he arrived at the door. He had to open it in the way he did earlier today. So he found the piece of wire that he threw beside the door and started to pick the lock again. When he just walked through the door, he saw a black shadow rush towards him. He swiftly dodged it and reached out his hand to grab it. After he saw what it was, he was surprised. It was a floor lamp! His eyes followed the long rail of the lamp and saw Scarlett stood behind it, holding the part of the rail that was close to the base. Her eyes looked bloodthirsty.  “Are you crazy? Do you know you would kill a person?”  “Why would you pry the door open?”  “I don’t have the key!”  “Then you should knock on the door instead of picking the lock. Anyone would think that you are a burglar.” Marlow suddenly thought of the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. What kind of life was this? His life was in danger every minute. But he had to admit what she said made sense. She was alone at home. He should give her full credit for this kind of brave reaction when she heard somebody was picking the lock. Marlow threw himself to the sofa and reclined on it. Then he asked languidly, “How’s the progress with the agreement?” Scarlett went to her room and brought him a key. She threw it to him and said with a long face, “It is going to be done soon.”  “Come, little Scar, let me have a look first before I approve it.” The man who looked half-dead on the sofa said.  “Don't call me Scar! Or I will leave some scars on your face!” snapped Scarlett.  “Then you will be Scarface’s woman. Okay, don’t glare at me as if you are going to devour me. Take your time in drafting that agreement. I’ll go to take a shower. Don’t peep through the crack at me while I am naked.” As he said, he disappeared into the bathroom. He took off his clothes quickly and threw them into the laundry basket.  “Go to hell!” The mirror reflected a hunky man with a proportional and powerful physique. His tanned skin glowed under the soft light of the bathroom and his muscles struck people as being full of power. If one had to pick some blemish, then he could say that he had too many scars. On some part of his skin, they even overlapped or criss-crossed. They seemed to be the pictographs that recorded his extraordinary past. The most shocking things were one deep scar and a tattoo on his chest. The tattoo was a glowering wolf that was poised to launch an attack. Its white fur was tainted with blood and it was looking up at the sky howling. On the skin under the neck of the wolf, there was a long and deep scar that crossed his whole chest. It was hard to believe that one could survive such a fatal injury. Marlow allowed the cold water to hit his skin, splashed and ran down along his body. He lifted his hand to touch the scar on the wolf and his face twisted in pain. A familiar picture came to his mind again.  “Captain, you have to be alive! You are our hope!”  “Boss, you can’t die. Or I wouldn’t have peace all my life!”  “Marlow, I’m going. We’ll be brothers again next life.”  “…” Bang! His eyes turned bloodshot and he hit his fist against the wall in pain. Once, twice, three times. He hit his fists heavily against the wall as if he went mad.  “Why?! Why would that happen?” He growled as he hit the wall again and again. He was on the brink of mental collapse.  “What made you go crazy again? What’s this fit about?” At this moment, he heard Scarlett’s displeased snap from outside and the knocking on the door. He was pulled back from the brink of collapse.  “Leave me alone. Go write your agreement!” grumbled Marlow weakly. He padded his face to perk up.  “Psycho!” Scarlett also grumbled. Then she returned back to the square table. Hearing her footsteps walk away, Marlow let out a sigh. After a moment, he pulled a towel from the rack and started to dry his body. He recalled Halbert again…  “Marlow, if I die, you have to promise me to take care of my sister.”  “Shut up! Every time we go on a mission, you say the same thing. I promise you that you will live a thousand years to scourge the world.” Recalling what Halbert said, he shook his head and smiled wryly. His words proved prophetic and sooner than expected.  His sister was always at the top of his priority list. He boasted that his sister was a stunner and whoever married her would be the happiest man in the world. But he only said those words to Marlow, who he had already approved to be his brother-in-law. Marlow looked at himself in the mirror and said softly but earnestly, “Halbert, please be assured. I will take care of your sister…though the task is a little difficult.” After he adjusted his mood, he strolled out of the bathroom while drying his hair with a towel.  “How is it going, Miss Murphy? How about I draft it for you? You are the president of a company, a person making important decisions. Drafting a house sharing agreement is the job for your secretary,” teased Marlow. Scarlett lifted her head displeased and gave him a glare, but she raised her eyebrows immediately and cried out in a high-pitched voice, “Bastard! Who allows you to use my bath towel?!” Marlow fell down and lied flatly on the floor at that, his arms pretending to be twitching. He said with difficulty, “Come, get me my heart medicine...I can’t breathe…”  “It’s great if you have a heart attack. Give me back my bath towel!” Scarlett ignored his verisimilar show and shouted at him after walking close to him.  “Are you sure? Okay. I have to tell you that I wear nothing under the towel. You have to take responsibility after you see me naked.”  “Ah! You dirty scum! Don't take it off. I don’t want the towel! You can have it. Oh, God, why would you punish me like this?” She looked as miserable as a woman whose tears had already drained.  “This last sentence should be said by me.” Marlow got up and walked to her side, looked at her with innocent eyes and said, “I was nearly killed by a floor lamp just stepped into the house. And then you scared me with shrieks. I have to tell you that I have heart problems. You can’t startle me every now and then. Put this on the agreement. ‘No shriek or scream without reason.’ If you do it again, I will have to kick you out.” Scarlett stared at him with angry eyes but she could only clench her teeth and say nothing. Of course she had somewhere else to go. But then she had to live with her friends who would laugh at her when they knew that the president of a big company was put into such a plight by her father. She preferred to fight against Marlow here. Suddenly her attention was attracted by Marlow’s naked upper body. Marlow wasn’t a superficial guy, but he still couldn’t help but feeling complacent when he saw a beautiful woman was attracted by his sexy body. She watched him for about three seconds and then pointed at the head of the wolf tattoo. “Are you Khitan people?” …
