Sofia decided to confront Kane the next day.
She had been through a lot and he was making her go through worse. She dressed up in her nicest clothes and wore the most expensive perfumes from her collections.
She was up and ready. She would walk into his house and grab him by the collar and give him a slap. Or…probably a last kiss, before she finally breaks up with him.
That girly emotion had taken over her again. She had it somewhere in her heart that, if he gave a valid explanation she would forgive him.
She dicided to turn on the television before she took off that morning, but something was in store for her, something bigger.
The news headline read,
‘BELLANTI SCANDAL SHOCKER : HEIR CAUGHT IN ILLEGAL DEAL WITH UNKNOWN CRIME SYNDICATE’
Sofia eyes widened open, she unknowingly dropped her bag down to the couch. But she wasn't even moved. She squinted, to read the headlines again. Bellanti scandal. Illegal. Unknown crime syndicate?
What in the world was going on in her life?
The reporter said “ A major scandal has rocked the Bellanti family this morning as new evidence links Marco Bellanti, the younger heir of the Bellanti empire, to an illegal business deal with an unknown syndicate.”
“What?” Sofia stood shocked, startled, astonished, surprised. All the words in the world could describe. “Marco?” She murmured to herself.
The reporter continued, “Sources confirmed that Marco signed a private deal with what appeared to be a foreign investment firm. The investor with whom Marco signed the deal is known to be anonymous and nowhere to be found.”
Just as Sofia was about to rush out of her house and to the office, she heard something catchy.
“The deal reportedly involved trading sensitive shares of Bellanti's own company and partnering company, Capo industries, in exchange for fast cash investments without the knowledge or approval of the board. Mr. Capo had noticed this and reported this to the…”
Sofia switched the televisiom off. ‘Domenico Capo'. She thought
She fell to the couch and held her chest, panting. Her heart beat increased so much, every where felt dizzy.
“Ahhhhh!” She screamed out of frustration. And tears unknowingly dropped from her eyes as she frowned deeply at the news.
….
“ I didn't do anything!” Marco tried to defend himself as the police took him through the flashing cameras and curious reporters.
Everywhere was rowdy and the front of the Bellanti empire was filled with people, reporters, passers by, employees.
Marco felt like the ground would just open and swallow him. For the first time he needed his sister by his side.
He prayed silently that Sofia doesn't believe what the reporters said. He knew he was careless but he wouldn't even think of doing such grievous act.
“Mr. Marco, do you have any comment on the scandal?”
“ Mr. Marco, what was your real motive behind it?”
“Who was the other secret investor you invested with?”
“ Mr. Marco, please here. Do you think your father is happy with your dealings?”
Marco wasn't even paying attention. Everything felt like a dream and noise in his head.
“Please let me at least call my lawyer.” Marco said to one of the oficer who followed him.
“Mr. Bellanti, you'll have your request granted at the police station”. He answered bluntly.
He was about entering the police van when Sofia came running from behind. “Please!” She said as she stopped holding Marco's arms panting heavily. Her face, tired, sweaty and her body weak.
When Marco sighted her, his heart felt a little relieved, “i don't know what they are talking about, Sofia. I promise I did nothing.” the seriousness in his voice. Good thing Sofia trusted him.
“I know, I know,” she said and cupped her brother's face. “I know you're innocent. I just need you to calm down. I'm going to solve this before 24 hours”. Her voice, hasty and shaky.
Marco broke down in tears, his sister supported him. He felt loved for the very first time. “Thank you, Sofia” he lowered his head and shook it, sniffling. “I didn't do nothing.” He faced her, giving her an innocent look.
“Don't you worry, nothing is going to happen.” She turned to the officer. “Officer please, I will be there with our lawyer.” She said very tensed. The urgency in her voice.
The officer nodded and uttered nothing. Pushing Marco's head down into he car.
Marco looked at his sister, with hope.
She saw his look and pitied him. “Don't worry I'll be there in no time, you don't have to worry” she increased her voice as the car took off.
The media rushed to meet Sofia when they sighted her. Sofia noticed and covered her face with her bag, walking faster to her car. She hurriedly took her keys from her bag, her hands shaking. And tried to open the door, but she was trembling just too much for the keys to fit in. “Damn it!” She cursed as the media drew nearer.
But the stars fell in alignment with her today, the keys finally fit in and she opened the door as fast as she could, entered her car and drove off.
When she drove far enough she couldn't sight the media and didn't let them catch up with her, she pulled over and grabbed her phone and called her lawyer.
“Meet me at the police station.” and that was all she said to get her lawyer running. She believed he already saw or heard the news. There was no time for explanations. She sent the address to him and left for the station.
…
In the police station,
Marco was already locked up in a cell when Sofia got to the station with her lawyer, Raymond.
She scanned everywhere for Marco, first thing when she arrived at the police station. When she sighted him in a cell, she was about running to meet him when Raymond stopped her.
“It's better we meet with the head officer first.” Raymond said as he held her arm, stopping her from running to Marco.
Sofia nodded softly.
They sighted the head officer in charge of Marco's case and went ahead to meet him.
“Sir, we are here to bail Marco out.” Sofia said as she stood across the officer, her hands leaning on his desk, making her bend towards him a little.
She was so tensed Raymond summoned her to sit and to let him handle it, with a nod.
The officer couldn't care less, he didn't bother answering.
“Officer,” Raymond paused and adjusted his glasses, looking at the badge on the officer’s shirt for his name. “Trent, officer Trent. We'll like to bail Marco out as the case is still under investigation.”
Ofricer Trent gave Raymond a scary look, “Are you a lawyer?” His voice sharp and wicked at the same time.
Sofia was displeased by the officer’s behaviour towards them. She had no time for drama. “Excuse me?”
Raymond and officer Trent turned towards her.
“I don't have time for all this. Does he look like a thug?” She paused and leaned her back on the chair. Crossing both her legs and arms, tilting her head a little to face the officer. “Do you have any idea what I can do to you? Get my brother released now!” She shouted a little too loud, the frustration was evident in her tone.
Raymond moved closer to her and softened his voice, more like a whisper, “Please calm down and let me handle it.”
“The law doesn't work like that, Miss Bellanti” the officer interjected. “I’m really trying to be calm with you Miss Bellanti.” He turned his look away from her and back to his desks, opening some files on his desk. “No power is above the law.” He said without facing her
Sofia was about retaliating when Raymond calmed her again. “Miss Sofia, if you keep behaving like this, it will be difficult for us to bail Marco out.”
“It is already difficult.” The officer said,.looking up to Raymond and Sofia.
Raymond wondered if he was too loud or wasn't low enough that officer Trent could hear him
“ What do you mean by that?” Sofia narrowed her eyes back at the officer.
