I had no idea what to wear for dinner with Broc. He told me to dress nicely and it felt like a date which I didn’t like. I felt like something was wrong. Like something bad was going to happen.
I pushed the feeling down and started getting ready. At one point I felt overwhelmed, but again I ignored it and got dressed.
I decided on a simple white cotton dress that fell just below my knees. It had thick straps and fit me tight till my waist and then flared out. It reminded me of a dress that I would see in movies from the 60’s and I loved it.
As I was finishing my hair, my Nana came into my room.
“Hey Nana, how do I look?” I asked, twirling around and looking at her.
I stopped from the look on her face. I knew something was wrong.
“Baby sit down.”
“What happened?”
She wrapped her arms around me. “There was an accident. Kingston and Chase are both in critical condition.”
Pain and fear were all I could feel. I didn’t realize I was crying at first. “How?”
“We don’t really know the details. All we know is that it was a car accident. But we need to pack a bag. Your father is sending the jet to come and get us.”
Without hesitation, I shoved some stuff into a bag and we headed to the airport.
I messaged Broc letting him know what had happened. He said he would talk to my professors about me. Which didn’t even matter to me. My twin and my mate might not make it back to me.
Finally arriving at the hospital, I was still in my white dress. I ran to my Mom and Dad. They looked terrible, as did Chase’s parents.
“Any news?”
“No baby, they are still in surgery.” My Mom said. It must be bad because we were at a human hospital. Which meant they didn’t have time to get them to the pack hospital.
For hours we sat and waited. I prayed and prayed. If they made it out of this, I was never going to leave them again. My entire world was in a hospital room fighting for his life. I was off being a selfish teenager. I should have been with them.
Finally, a doctor came out to talk to Laney and Eli.
“Your son has lost a lot of blood but he made it through surgery. He is sleeping now and it will be hours or possibly days before he wakes. We won’t know the extent of the damage to his brain till he wakes up. I need to let you know there is a chance he won’t wake up.”
I felt my whole world crumble. He would have been with me had I been home.
“Can we see him?” Laney asked.
“He is being moved to the ICU and only one person will be allowed in at a time. The nurses will let you know when you can see him.”
At least Chase was out of surgery but we still had not heard anything about Kingston.
Before long, a nurse came and took Laney, Eli and I to the fourth floor.
Laney went first to see her son as I waited with Eli.
“He is going to be OK, right?” I asked, looking over at Eli.
He looked like he had aged 20 years overnight. “I hope so Lillie.. I hope so.”
Laney emerged a short while later. Her eyes were puffy from crying and she was distraught.
“Go ahead Lillie, I know he is your mate and this is killing you. My mate needs me right now.” Eli said, wrapping his arms around Laney.
I slowly walked into his room. The only noise to be heard in the dark room was the steady beep of the monitor. He was covered with a blanket and his head was wrapped in white gauze. He looked like he was peacefully sleeping.
The cuts and bruises were slowly healing, which was one of the perks of having his wolf. I reached the bed and took his hand in mine and for the first time I felt sparks. I shouldn’t be feeling sparks till I have my wolf.
“Chase baby… Please come back to me. I need you. I love you. I promise if you wake up I will never leave your side.”
Tears fell from my face to his hand. I leaned forward and kissed his forehead. “You know you are my everything. I think about you all day long. Even when I try not to think about you.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle.
“You know you are my inspiration for every painting I have ever done. I guess you could say you are my muse.”
“Please baby come back to me.”
I stayed a while longer but I knew I needed to give Eli a chance to see his son and I needed to check on Kingston. He wasn’t as strong as Chase without his wolf, but at least he had his Alpha blood.
“I love you, Chase, and the moment you wake up, you are marking me. I am not waiting any longer. I love you.”
I softly kissed his lips again, feeling a spark and praying for him to open his eyes.
“Always and forever.”
I walked back to Eli and Laney to find that Chase’s sister had arrived. Knowing Laney was not alone, I made my way back to my parents.
They were still waiting to hear something about Kingston. My parents were a mess. I could see my Dad was trying to stay strong for my mom but he was falling apart too.
I wrapped my arms around my Dad. “He is the strongest of us all.”
He smiled down at me. “I am going to get you both some coffee.” I walked to the vending machine and got two coffees.
As I returned, I saw my parents talking to a doctor. I rushed toward them.
“Thank you doctor.” My Dad said before the doctor turned and walked away.
“Well, how is King?”
Dad looked over at me. “Not good baby. He made it through surgery and the doctor said he isn’t sure if he will make it through the night.”
Mom looked empty. “He told us to say our goodbyes. He doesn’t think he will make it through the night.” My mother whispered.
“Jaclyn.” My Dad said.
“She has the right to know he is her twin.”
My chest felt tight. I was finding it hard to breathe. Kingston couldn’t die. I needed him. Why is this happening?
“I…I can’t… I just need some air.”
Without thinking, I sprinted out of the hospital. I don’t know why, but I ran to a small wooded area near the hospital.
I dropped to the ground and the pain was unbearable. I felt like I was dying. The pain was so intense that I couldn’t breathe. My vision began to blur and then darkness.
The darkness was brief and I stood up. I felt comfort that I couldn’t explain.
“Hello Lillian.”
I looked around but I didn’t see anybody.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you.”
Again, I looked around and didn’t see anybody.
The voice giggled. “I am your wolf.”
“What?” It was only then that I realized I was talking in my mind.
I looked down to see I had hair and paws. I had shifted.
“My name is Echo.”
“How did I shift? I’m not 18.”
“But you needed me and here I am.”
“I’m going to lose them, aren’t I?”
“Oh sweet girl, not if I can help it.”
