Chapter one
Blue Moon Academy, the place where royal, noble and rich supernaturals send their children to receive a "special and well-rounded" education in what they see as a safe environment. In reality, it's just like any other boarding school, just with special classes for magic and decorum. Every September since I was eleven, my mother has shipped me here for nine months out of the year. Could be worse, I suppose. Some start as early as five. It was only at my father's request that I not start until I was eleven.
Looking out the window, the academy begins to come into view and, as always, a dreary fog surrounds it. They call it the barrier, it's a magically induced fog that supposedly keeps us safe from trespassers, as though the armed guards weren't enough. I sigh heavily and stroke my familiar Cinder's gray fur.
Everything alright? Cinder’s calm voice humms in my head.
Just the same as every year, I say as I scratch behind her ear, receiving purrs in return.
You’ll be fine princess, you got this.
I wish I could be as optimistic as you.
Well, I'm kinda a cat, it's easy for me. She sits up and looks at me with her intelligent blue eyes, looking almost as if she were smirking at me.
Smartass
You wouldn't love me if I wasn't. She purrs and rubs her face against my hand.
Touche. I smile and the car comes to a quick stop before continuing through the castle gates. The looming castle grows closer until we come to the circular drive and the driver announces that we’ve arrived, as if we didn’t have eyes to see that. Quickly, me and my brothers and sisters exit the car with our familiars and enter the academy without a single look or word to one another. Just another typical start to a typical school year.
Immediately, I head to the dorms I've been staying in since I first started here. Dorm 3A8 is my home with the same three girls for nine months out of the year. They're honestly the only ones I can really call friends in this place. Everyone is only looking out for alliances that they can use after they've graduated and gone. It’s always about someone's position and what they can do for your position. It’s tiring, but around my roommates, Camille Clara and Melodi, I feel as though I don't have to deal with that kind of stuff. Though I’m close with all of them, Melodi is easily my best friend and, even out of school to you normally don’t see one of us without the other.
Opening the door, I see that I'm the last one to arrive, as I'm quickly enveloped in a group hug. “Hey”, I giggle, “Nice to see you guys too.”
“ I missed you sooo much” Clara sighed dramatically. As they let go, I look at them and smile. Camille’s perfect blonde hair is up in a ponytail and her makeup, as always, is done just right, making her green eyes pop. Clara’s purple eyes twinkle with laughter as she jumps on her bed, causing her black curls to fan, framing her face. Melodi’s pale blond hair runs down to her waist, halfway fading into pink, and her dull red eyes let me know that she has recently fed. I still remember when we were all first assigned to this room together and the tension between Melodi and Camille. Who on earth decided to room a vampire and a werewolf together, the gods only know. In the end, after years of sharing the same dorms, it all worked out. No one expected it to work out, but they showed them they were wrong, after almost an entire year of fighting.
“So does anyone know their schedules yet?” Camille asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“They’re in our school emails.” Melodi replied, scrolling through her phone, “ I have Algebra 2, world literature, World history, Decorum 2 and leadership, in that order with one free period after world history.”
“ We have our classes together, Mel”, I spoke up, excited to have the same schedule as her, “I got the email on the way here and looked.”
“Odd i haven’t got it yet” Clara says while scrolling through her emails, looking for it.
“Maybe email our admin? I just found mine”. Camille says, “ Algebra 1, American Literature, physical science, Economics, decorum 2, leadership and choir.” She looks up from her phone and smiles, “ not too bad.”
“But you don't even have a free period,” I said as I scrunched my nose.
“ It's fine, i really wanted to continue with the choir.”
“If you say so” Melodi mumbles and walks to her bed to sit.
“I'm going to have to deal with this in person” Clara says to herself, standing up. “ I'm going to talk to the admin, I'll be back soon.”
“You didn't even give her five minutes to reply”, I called after her as she was closing the door. She's lucky our admin is a vampire, it's like ten at night. I look over to Camille's bed to see she’s already out like a light with her phone still in her hand and decide it's probably time for me to go to bed as well. Climbing into bed, I turned my lamp off and drifted to sleep.
