ALPHA AXEL POV She had a firm body; she was small but nicely curved. I wasn’t a very big man but I was sure I would lift her with one hand. I think the first thing I fell for was her smile as her lips were the only part of her I could see, then her laughter. Her voice was quite funny, she always paused hesitantly before she answered any of my questions. It almost seemed like she wasn’t used to talking, to saying her mind. It took total discipline not to take off her mask, I wanted to see her face so badly least she became Cinderella and run off before the night was over and I’ll never see her again. I would bid my time, being an Alpha, it was my duty to lead by example, the ball was a masked one and she had every right to keep her eyes covered. Her name was Rachel. Something had pulled me to her right from the first moment I set my eyes on her when she entered the hall. She wore a ball gown like every other lady but she stood out from them, the gown was green and her gloves were black, I couldn’t figure out the color of her eyes through the mask. I had first watched her, how she followed the lady she had come with everywhere, almost walking in her shadow. I wanted to reward her friend for pushing her to walk on her own. The lady had held Rachel's hands and, I guess, gave her a pep talk on socialization before shooing her off. That was when I approached her. I later got to know that was her best friend, Davina. Rachel seemed to get comfortable when she talked about Davina. Many had advised me to pick any woman as my Luna but I was sure the moon goddess had someone for me, I promised myself I would wait patiently. I didn’t want to raise my hopes but could she be the one? I needed to take off her mask and look into her eyes, the hall was too dark and all I could see was her small lips. “Aren’t you feeling a bit hot?” I asked, she shouldn’t be, the hall was well-conditioned but I needed to be alone with her. “Not really, the air here is nice.” She answered with another smile. She didn’t fall for my plan. I just had to carry her along then. “I think you are.” I put my hands in hers and pulled her behind me. “Look, you’re even sweating.” She gasped. “Am I?” She followed me with a little hesitation and more curiosity. Taking her outside would be a risk, too many people would see us, and the perfect place was my library. I hoped she didn’t mind being around books. She didn't mind, she loved it. As soon as the door opened and she saw the shelves, she ran from behind me and went ahead. “They are so pretty.” She murmured, looking around. “Books? You think books are pretty?” I replied from behind her. “Of course. How are they arranged?” She was the curious type. “According to their genre, then from the oldest to the latest,” I answered. “Do you have any historical books on us?” She asked slowly. “Us?” I wasn’t sure I grabbed that. “Hmmm. Werewolves.” Oh. Those were my favorite books, being an Alpha, I loved to read about ancient wolves, and those books had helped me with my pack. “Yes, I do.” The fact that she asked for those books was my conviction. This woman was mine. “Really? Can I see?” She turned and faced me, looking all excited. How could I not kiss her? I took a step to close the distance between us, she took a simultaneous one to maintain our gap. On a normal day, I would keep taking steps till her back hit the shelves but I wanted to kiss this woman. My hand went around her neck to keep her in place as I haunted her lips with mine, it seemed like she was torn between wanting to kiss me and being proper as she almost folded her lips in but finally let them free a second before my lips touched hers. Her lips were soft, they tasted of the drink she had taken earlier, it was a fruity taste, strawberry. She wasn’t an experienced kisser, she did nothing, just surrendered her lips to me. A gasp escaped her throat when I parted her lips and delved my tongue inside, her hands gripped my shirt. I should end the kiss before it became something more, my brain knew that, even my heart knew that, but my lips became its own master. My hands moved higher and held her face like it was under another man’s control. When her soft small wet tongue shyly met mine, my control slipped. Her breast rose under her gown, her breath hitched as my tongue did another slide over hers, my lips sucked at hers and we both danced with our tongues till we needed air. But when my lips left hers, the first reflex wasn’t to take a deep breath. The call came out in unison, it was primal and urgent like we had been waiting for each other all our lives. “MATE!!” I wanted to scream for joy, Finally, my wait was worth it but the look on her face called me, it was that of horror. My first thought was that she had someone else she wanted to be with and didn’t want me. Maybe she had been dancing with me because I was Alpha and she couldn’t tell me no. “I can’t be your mate!” She whimpered; it was like she was close to tears. She pulled out of my arms but I didn’t let her. “Why?” The words were calm. I would go to the ends of the earth to get rid of whatever the problem was. She took a deep breath and stood straight. Her hand went to the back of her head to loosen her mask. It fell to the ground in a few seconds and she said, “This is why.” What the f**k?
