PRIMROSE HOLT.
“Happy Birthday to me.” I muttered to myself as I got out of bed and pulled the curtains open to stare outside.
I inhaled a huge amount of air and smiled to myself. It’s Christmas Eve already and not just that, it’s also the mating convention day and my birthday too.
The only day I’ve been looking forward to because I’ve come of age and I’ll finally get to meet my mate, the only person that I’d spend the rest of my entire life with.
Waiting has been exhausting but I’ve finally turned 19 and it’s the big day already that fell on another big day and that makes it a huge celebration for the people in the pack.
Being the only disabled werewolf in the pack after my mom died left me with the most humiliating treatment ever.
I could never blend with the pack, I could also never make friends with any of the female werewolves because they’d rather do something else other than be my friend and the entire pack members regarded me as nothing but a shame.
I was born with an extremely high fever that rid me of my ability to speak and at first it didn’t matter because I had my mother but things changed when she died when I was five years old.
“WHERE IS THAT STUPID GIRL!” I jumped when I heard my stepsister’s voice in the hallway and I could just tell that she was making her way towards my room.
“I swear to God, I’m going to tear her to shreds!” She threatened and I shivered. Calling out to her and telling her that I’m in my room would be useless because I can’t use my words, literally.
Trying to make my way to the door, pain rippled through me and I winced as my head ached and the pain from yesterday started engulfing my body.
I was an illegitimate child of the old alpha who had hated me right from the moment that I was born, he never failed to show his disgust and the fact that if he could kill me, he would have.
If he hadn’t gotten drunk that day and mistaken a mute woman who couldn’t protest for a normal woman, then he wouldn’t have ended up with a child like me.
The door to my room bursted open and I felt a huge lump at the back of my throat as I swallowed and waited for what was going to come with my step-sister’s angry outbursts.
My father had permitted everyone not just in the house but also in the pack to treat me however they pleased and most of them treated me like usual, garbage.
It was worse at home because my stepsister and stepmother never let a day pass without making me rue the day I was brought to life.
“Did you not hear me call for you?!” She screamed, making my ear hurt and before I could bat an eyelash, I felt a really painful sting on my cheek.
It burned so bad as tears trickled down my cheeks, I looked up at her and opened my mouth to speak, to apologize for whatever I might have done to her but that only made it worse.
“Are you trying to talk back?” Ophedelia, my stepsister snarled, fire burning in her eyes and anger rolling out of her tongue so effortless that I felt my stomach curl.
“Did I not tell you never to open your mouth and let me hear that disgusting sound you make, did I not tell you that?” She barked angrily as she threw the apple she was eating at my face.
“Did you not hear me?!” She yelled, causing me to swallow whatever apology I wanted to offer as her hand latched on to my wrist.
“Come here, you useless mute.” I couldn’t protest as she started dragging me out of the room, banging my head against anything that I came across but I dared not try to tell her that.
We soon got to the kitchen and there were a whole lot of dirty dishes, she didn’t need to tell me what she wanted me to do, I already knew.
“If you have time trying to put a useless effort into making a useless sound that plunges the entire pack into the pit of hell then you might as well make yourself useful.” She hissed as she started heading for the door.
“Get to work!” She snapped and I immediately got to work. This really isn’t how I planned to celebrate the Christmas Eve, mating convention and my birthday but who am I to have a wish.
Taking a deep breath, I started practicing my speech, doing my best to be as quiet as possible as I practiced because the pack’s doctor had told me that my throat could be cured.
“For that to actually happen, you would need some extremely rare herbs, which would take a lot of money to pay the apothecaries that can get it for you.” The doctor had said.
“Other than that, you can make do with vocal lessons until you’re ready to get the herb.” He advised and I smiled as I nodded.
I remembered feeling hopeful, happy that my throat could finally be cured and I could finally talk and communicate like a normal person but all of that hope was shattered when I went to my father.
With a heart full of happiness and hope, I made my way to my father and told him everything that the doctor had said.
My father doesn’t understand sign language but he had a guard that understood and while I signed, the guard translated everything I was trying to say.
“So?” He asked with a raised eyebrow, his facial expression showing that he wasn’t impressed that my throat could finally be cured and if anything, he was livid.
“Do you think I have a money tree somewhere in here that I can just pluck money from and waste on your stupid throat treatment?!” His voice hardened ruthlessly as he spoke.
My stomach churned and my heart tightened in pain as all hopes of being able to speak were shattered.
“You’d finally get to speak again?” He asked and I didn’t miss the sarcasm in his voice as he bursted out laughing, “don’t waste my time and get out of my sight, stupid mute.” He added in a harsh, raw voice.
“All my money would be spent on your stepmother and the rest of my kids, I have no money to waste on an excuse like you.” He finished in a very nasty tone.
“You had better get out of here before my mood changes and you regret waltzing into this place.” He warned and without hesitation, I rushed out of his throne room.
I felt ice spreading through my stomach, an acute sense of loss overwhelmed me as I walked away but I didn’t let that weigh me down
The doctor had said that I had a second shot with vocal lessons and I practiced really hard day and night, that must be the sound Ophedelia was talking about.
I finished with my chore although it took hours and I started preparing for the party. Everyone thought I couldn't speak at all, but after years of practice, I could make a voice, but it was hard to speak in full.
No one else but myself knows this.
Smiling to myself, I could only trust that my future would be bright once I find my mate and cure my voice.
I rushed to the venue that the party was going to hold and the convention bell rang as the Christmas Eve party started after that.
My breathing paced as my heart began to thump really loudly, my body felt extremely hot and I could feel sweats forming on my forehead and also trickling down my temple.
It was a strange feeling, a sensation that made me feel like something was terribly wrong somewhere and at that moment, I saw the male werewolves eyes beginning to change.
They all looked like they’ve been possessed by something, their eyes were red and bloody, they were like predators ready to feast on their prey.
“Mate.” They all said in unison as their fangs and claws became visible and they started drooling as they all faced me and began walking towards me.
“Mate.” They kept repeating, it was almost like a zombie apocalypse, they were ready to attack, to claim me as they all started walking even faster towards me.
My eyes widened in shock, confusion set in as I tried to escape them but not only did they catch up to me, they overpowered me, making it hard for me to get my freedom.
The market square was a total disaster as they pulled me, grabbing my hair and clothes and touching places that I also never thought that they would touch.
What is happening? Why is this happening?!
I heard the announcement and I felt hope start filling me when I heard that my father and Alpha Dylan were around. I fought as hard as I could to be a little bit free.
My eyes landed on my father and I waited for him to do something about this but he only looked the other way, completely disregarding and walking past me.
My heart broke into a million pieces, I could see it in his eyes, I knew that he saw this as an opportunity to get rid of me.
He wouldn’t care if I died.
Alpha Dylan’s eyes carefully scrutinized me and I waited for him to order my execution because it’s my fault that the market square is a total mess but he also didn’t say anything as the men tried to pull me into them.
Even the married men were also acting strange, they couldn’t control themselves and it didn’t take long for them to start walking towards me but of everyone at the market square, Alpha Dylan was the only one without a reaction.
Being an onlooker, he only watched. I’m in this alone, there’s no one here that would try to save me from this mess.
“Get off me!” I yelled mentally as I tore through all them and ran as fast as my legs could carry me into the arms of Alpha Dylan Lincoln.
What the hell have I done?
