Chapter 1
"Amanda, the patient folders I asked you for have yet to see the top of my desk. Is there a valid reason for this?"
"Of course, sir. They are still waiting for me to put them there; they aren't mobile, we spoke about this."
"How do you still have this job?"
"I'm a good lay."
"That must be it. It's really not your shining personality, believe me. I want those files."
"Sure thing, Daddy."
I laugh at the groan that comes through the line as my boss, David Freeman, cuts the call. Not many people would put up with the s**t I put that man through, but as I said, I'm a good lay. Not something I can put in my resume, but then you don't need one of those when you can just open your legs and get what you want. Go on judge me, see if I care.
I look at the old lady in front of my desk, see the look she gives me, and give her a smile. It always infuriates them more when they see just how little I care. She doesn't disappoint: she tries to look down her nose at me. From where she's sitting, it's a complete fail.
"Dr. Freeman will be with you soon, Ma'am," I tell her.
"Thank you. " Her look says 'you are poor filth.' Oh well.

Three years ago, I moved to this town. I hadn't planned to stay, but I met David at the bar and somehow got a job from him in the 15 minutes we spoke before he dragged me to his bed and lost himself between my legs. He swears it was the look in my eyes that begged him to save me from my demons. I say he's the only demon I have. His wife agrees. It might have something to do with us being friends though, so I can't really trust her opinion.
Back to my arrival in this town. I was running, I'll admit that. I am grateful to the good doctor for giving me this job and putting up with me, even if I won't admit this to him. I had no direction, all I knew was that I wasn't going back the way I came, so forward was the way to go.
David gave me a job and a place to stay until I could afford to pay rent on my own. He met his wife two months after I left his house. She was a waitress at a pizza place I bought my pizza at on my way home every night.
This one night I had invited David for dinner at my place because he kept wanting to see my place. We got pizza because I was not going to cook after a long day of dealing with people. It figures that this had to be the day I got into a huge argument about which sauce I wanted on my pizza with the manager. She kept on telling me they were out of sweet chili sauce and I told her I wanted sweet chili with my pizza. I mean, what self-respecting fast-food joint runs out of sweet chili sauce?
She called me an i***t, I dumped my pizza on her. I cannot remember anything else being said after that. All I remember was David pulling me off the woman and apologizing to her for my behavior like I was in the wrong. Obviously, David must've been lovestruck at this point, because nothing else makes any sense. I never got my pizza that night. David, bless his soul, took me home the went to get fried fish and chips.
The following evening when I passed the pizza place the manager chick was kicking her car because it refused to start. No, I did not help her. I laughed at her and continued on my way home. I don't know how she got home that night, I didn't care.
She got home safely though because the following day she was staring at me on the other side of my desk looking like she'd rather swallow broken glass than tell me her details for her folder. Believe me when I say I was the perfect example of professionalism to her.
" The doctor has turned invisible; you can't see him."
"That makes zero sense."
"Just like chicken pizza without sweet chili sauce."
"You know you are missing a few screws, right?"
"I am aware."
"I'm Tania."
"Amanda."
"I have a free pizza with your name on it if you let what happened the other day go."
"Sweet chili sauce?"
"Of course."
"I'll give you a slice"
"Just one?"
"And a can of soda, to go with."
A week later, Tania and I were drinking partners. She drank and I dragged her off every 3 legged being she found herself on top of. We were having a blast. Until David ruined it by asking her out. Then I became the third wheel in our hangout sessions. David, the i***t. three months later, they were married. and I had myself a new life.
