"With the power bestowed upon me by this high court, I hereby sentence you Mr James Carter to death by a firing squad." This, followed by the sound of the judge's gavel sealed the unjust decree upon my father that very Morning ten years ago for a murder he was framed for. My name is Jane Carter. Ten years ago, my dad and I lived together. Not really a comfortable life but atleast we were happy in our little cottage where we both lived on the outskirt of town after loosing my mother to chronic asthma. Dad worked as a blacksmith to provide us with food and shelter while I did little odd jobs a girl my age could to support in the bills till one faithful Morning while dusting off tables at the coffee shop where I worked at that time, my dad appeared on TV in cuffs and was being dragged into a police van for the kidnap and murder of the governor's son which I could swear on my life he was innocent of. I abandoned my little wet rag and ran as fast as I could all the way down to the station where I pleaded with teary eyes for an audience with my father. He was framed! that one look in his eyes told me he didn't do it. But just anyone would believe he indeed was guilty because of his poor background. I was only Fourteen, scared and confused with no one to help me. I didn't know how to set him free till the day he was to appear in court drew nearer and I remember the hot uncontrollable tears that dropped down my cheek that very moment he was sentenced to death. I screamed at the top of my voice and struggled to run up to him but was stopped from moving any further till he was out of my sight after a long last look he managed to cast in my direction. On the day of his execution, I ran all the way because I couldn't afford to board a taxi nor even rent a bicycle if at all I knew how to ride one. I reached eventually, but I was too late. The sound of gun firing was what welcomed me when I threw the door open. That very day, my life changed. I got back home in the cold, broken and alone. I had no family and no friends because no one associated themselves with me. I couldn't even secure a job to pull myself through because no one would employ me, it was worse for me in school because I was tagged a murderer's daughter and the discrimination was unbearable as no one would let me have lunch at their table. Eventually, I dropped out. I sold out our already worn out belongings bit by bit to atleast have something to eat and save up for the rent but what I made up just wasn't enough for anything and before I knew it, I was out on the streets with no family, no home and no where to go. I was walking on the street that fateful day with tears in my eyes fully obstructing my sight as it stung and clouded my sunken eyes when a vehicle pulled up in front of me and the strange looking man waved at me when the car's tinted glass was pressed down allowing us a conversation. "Hello little girl, where are you going?" He asked looking at me from where he was seated. I couldn't utter a word nor did I have a response for him so I just shook my head in response and didn't hold back my tears. He studied me carefully for a while and then the door of the car was opened wide for me to get in. Dad always told me not to talk to strangers, but that stranger was the only one who seemed to care even a little bit about me so I took that bold step and joined him in the car and that was how my life turned around. "Agent Carter, it is time." Someone announced to me with a quick knock from behind the closed door of my room where I've stayed for the past ten years ever since I was enrolled into what we call The Academy. I alongside many others whom I met here after my encounter with the strange man many years back were tirelessly trained to be agents and spies working for the general at his beckon and call. Our job was to terminate with no questions asked. I on the other hand had absolutely no problem doing that because I was keeping the state free of the dirty old rich men that oppress and frame people who have no means of defending themselves. Alongside being an agent in the academy, food and shelter has never been a worry for me as you're basically provided with all you need and a functioning account where you get paid on every successful mission. Tonight, My Target is the retired Mayor. He's throwing himself a retirement party and I shall make this day his doomsday. Strapping on my stiletto heel that completely matched my red dinner gown, I smeared my lips with deep red lipstick and snatched up my clutch purse with a smirk on my face after one glance at my own reflection in the mirror. I walked down the hallway and out of the building where the black SUV was awaiting me. I stepped in and met with Agent Curry my partner on this particular mission already seated and awaiting me in the vehicle dressed in a similarly breathtaking dress but in a darker color compared to mine. The journey commenced after a brief nod we sent each other and we arrived at the party already in full session. Agent Curry and I plugged in our communication devices and joined the party in different directions. "I have eyes on the Mayor, do you copy?" Agent Curry's voice rang in through my ears from the almost invisible device plugged into my ears a few minutes after we arrived. "Copy that" I replied while turning over to look at her from where she was seated with a glass of champagne. She signalled his direction to me with a movement of her head and I sighted the mayor almost immediately. He appears exactly the same as the photo of him I had pinned on a board on the wall of my room with several information dug up about him. His dull dark brown suit and matching tie was no match for his happy looking self as he sat gloriously laughing and talking to the ladies that gathered round him. I was about gracefully walking over to him, making sure to allow a full view of my well tanned legs through the long slit of my dress running up to just above my thighs when I got intercepted by some random weasel. I almost rolled my eyes at him when he flashed me a boyish smile too childish for someone who appeared to be in his mid thirties. "Hello Pretty, why don't you let me buy you a drink?" He spoke while running the tip of his credit card down my forehead to the tip of my nose. "Back off." Was all I said, waisting no time in speaking my total lack of interest for him. "Fierce Woman I see" he replied and rolled the end of my thick black hair around his index finger while holding eye contact with me. It will take me nothing to drive a sharp rod through his neck but we were in public and more so, I wasn't here for him. I pushed him off me as gently as I could and strode over to the mayor making sure to announce myself with the noise I made with my heel clicking powerfully on the marbled floor with every single step I took and he did notice me. I smirked when I saw that glint in his eyes when he watched me approach and he held a hand out to me which I took and placed myself on his lap while running my fingers over his chest gazing at him seductively. He waved off the other ladies and focused all on me. I must say, it really pays to be this beautiful. My Dark hazel eyes and plump full lips with my rosy cheeks and tall slender body with enough flesh in the right places placed this certain irresistible charm around me. I swirled my dark long hair and threw my head back laughing cutely at every single whispered joke he made loud enough for just me to hear. I discreetly nodded at Agent Curry when he took my hand in his and led me away towards the VIP section and she understood the message, following behind us at a safe distance. I saw her from the corner of my eye take down a server at the corner and dragged her away while I followed the mayor to the very less crowded place where it was basically just us and a few others too busy making out to notice our presence. "Would you like a drink?" He inquired when a server passed by us and I nodded my head in response while wondering what's taking Agent Curry so long. He motioned the server over and swiped us two glasses of champagne from his tray and he carried on his way. I intentionally hit down his glass when I saw Agent Curry appear from behind the curtains now herself dressed as a server with a single filled glass on her almost empty tray. "I'm so sorry" I apologized as I briefly looked over at the pieces of broken glass on the ground surrounded by its spilled content. "I'll get you another" I whispered to him and he flashed me his full set of teeth while I waved Agent Curry over and swiped the drink out of her tray while she bowed curtly and carried on her way and only I understood that gesture. It only but meant the work is done. I handed him the poisoned glass and we clicked our glasses together in cheers with me watching him with a smirk as he gulped down the content and I swallowed down mine. "I need to use the restroom, I'll be just a minute" I announced with a wink and walked away with my glass I dropped on a random server's tray amidst several other empty glasses and only then did I increase my pace in a not so suspicious way towards the exit and joined Agent Curry in the car before the driver zoomed off. I glanced down at my wristwatch, Tick-Tock mayor, two minutes more and he's off the surface of this Earth. When we arrived at HQ, we headed straight for the general's office to give report. "The Work is done Sir" We chorused with our heads bowed to our general who's face I haven't gotten a glimpse of for the past ten years as he's always seated in a dark corner with his wide hat blocking his face. "The news has already been confirmed" He announced in his usual thick mysterious tone swaying in his seat. "Agent Carter, Agent Curry, Excellent job. Return to your base and await the next Order" He added. "Yes Sir" we chorused and went our way. When I got back to my room, I picked up my red marker and drew a bold X over the mayor's photo pinned on the board like the many others lined up behind his. I took a pin and pressed it on the next empty space after his photo, Who's Next?
