The air was tense. I had never seen my father so afraid in my lifetime. One girl, one girl caused this entire atmosphere. The dark cloud of death that hung around her was sensed by everyone in the room. Even my brother who would usually be cracking a joke or making a fool of himself was quiet. Clank...Clank...Clank. She carefully and delectetly cut her steak. She was the only one moving, which wasn't surprising, this day had proven to be full of many first.
Without warning she began to speak, softly and slowly giving every word its own importance, “Malkum, please do tell why I am here.” My father was quick to respond, “You are the best at what you do. I have 50 new recruits coming in and I wish for you to train them.” When she didn't respond my father started to speak faster, nervous almost, “I full understand if you don't take it. You must be busy with your brother and father, I couldn't possibly” “And in return?” she cut him off quickly as if she had made up her mind, her words still echoed throughout the room. “In return we will make it worth your while.” I was shocked to hear those words come out of my mouth and now I regret it. Her attention turned towards me as if she never even realized that I was in the same room as her. As deadly as she was rumored to be her eyes were not those of killers. Soft blue eyes looked at me she looked so hard as if she was looking at my life through my eyes.
“This is bullshit! You are in our house and you will not sit there and looked at us as if we are your test rats.” “Cole! Apologize and excuse yourself from this room at once.” My father's voice was more strict in that sentence than it had been that entire night. Cole was quick to come back, “I will do no such thing! Just because you have decided to bow down and kiss her feet does not mean I have to too. I am Cole King, and I will have no one tell me what to do!” “Enough.” Her voice was no louder than before but for some reason that one word put an end to the argument between my father and brother. “I have sat here and observed and let me tell you what I had found,” she waited almost as if she had no idea what she was going to say, all of the sudden she picked back up again. “Your family is beyond damage, and I have my own family problems to attend to. However, because of the kindness you have shown me as a small child I will grant you this one thing.” With that she stood and as did we all, she stopped right in front of my brother. “Here is a lesson I have to teach you,” she grabbed his head and hit it on the table in one fluid motion so quickly that none of us had time to react, “Know your place.” With that she was gone.
“Father,” my brother was finally able to speak, “how do you know that woman?” “That woman as you just put it, is a child that was born into this world with nothing but herself. She was the daughter of my right hand back in the day. I have known her since she was just a child. Born into this world so beautiful, she looked so perfect. Unfortunately, piece by piece her mother took that light within her and turned her into the monster you see today.” “What did she do to her?” My brother was an i***t. Sometimes I wondered why my father even keeps him around. What was he five? My father wasn't going to tell us what happened to her. Although I wonder, if my father would have told us about all the demons that one girl was hiding in her past, would the outcome be the same? For the curiosity it awakened in me, to find out what happened to her was the thing that led me to find love, happiness, and death. This is how I met my downfall and it had a name: Cheyanne.
