Noah's POV:
The problems at home are getting worse. Nia has to watch this every day. I know she doesn't like it. I think it makes her feel uncomfortable. It's understandable. I wouldn't like it either. Sadly, I can't help her. I can make her quit, but she won't do it. This is what happened to our old maid, Carla. Mom started getting too picky when it came to her. So I fired Carla and gave her a cheque for twenty thousand dollars. That was the only thing I could do for her to help her. She didn't want to take the money, but I made her. That's why I can't leave her alone. Maybe she is better now. I have no idea where she is. The thing is that I don't want to do the same thing to Nia. The girl wants to keep this job. Well, I still think she could've worked something better. She is too young to listen to family drama. I should say that she was quick to notice everything. It's not like my family is hiding. They don't hide their arguments. At least they don't involve her in them. I won't let them. It's enough that she is doing everything for them. Sometimes, I think that Jasmine is taking advantage of that. She will always see Nia as a competitor. These two are so different. Jasmine wants to have everything. Nia is happy with what she has. At least, this is what it looks like to me. I hope that after some time, this will stop.
Currently, I am in the office. I couldn't sleep well last night. Charlie woke up and started crying. Jasmine was sleeping peacefully. Even if a bomb falls in the house, she won't hear it. I held the baby until she fell asleep again. This took me an hour. Later, I barely slept. It was too late. I had to wake up and get ready. Nia heard the baby as well. I could've left the baby with her if I knew she was awake. Maybe I'll do it the next time.
Now I am checking the mail that my assistant left me. I don't know how many magazine subscriptions I will receive. This is getting annoying. I threw everything away and left only the important ones. I was supposed to have a meeting today, but it got canceled. Some of the members of the team couldn't be here. On the lunch break, I will go to eat with my dad. I wish I knew what was going on at home. Jasmine is supposed to take care of the baby. Well, I believe she is talking to my mom. When the time came, I walked out. Dad and I went to the nearest restaurant.
- You wanted us to have lunch. Is there a problem? - dad asked
- Is there a way I can know what is going on at home without anyone else?
- Do you want to spy on someone?
- Maybe.
- I don't think this is a good idea. Is it about Jasmine?
- And Nia.
- Why?
- I believe that Jasmine treats her horribly while I'm not there.
- There is only one person who can help you.
- Who?
- Your grandpa. He loves one show about detectives. I'm sure he won't deny going undercover. - dad said, chuckling
- Dad, I'm serious.
- Me too. Your grandpa keeps complaining that nothing interesting happened. The man is bored. I'm sure he can help you.
- You think?
- Well, you have to ask him. This is my opinion.
- Thanks.
- Why do you care what Nia and Jasmine do?
- Because I don't want the same story to repeat. You know why Carla left.
- Yes. You fired her and gave her twenty thousand.
- I had to. You saw what my mom was doing to her.
- I know. Do you think Jasmine will do the same?
- Hopefully, not.
- You can ask your grandpa for help. I don't think he will deny it. He has nothing else to do.
- What if he tells my grandma? She can't find out about this.
- You should trust him more. Dad knows what he is doing. After all, he was managing the whole company alone.
- Alone? What about him?
- He barely needed me. I felt left out. I was sure the boss would be someone else.
- But now it's you.
- Yes, we argued about this. I didn't feel ready, but he knew I was.
- You are doing great, dad. Grandpa made the right choice.
- I will make mine.
- Don't get high hopes. I still don't know if this is what I want to do.
- Then what?
- If I knew, I would've told you.
- You have enough time to think about it.
- I don't think the boss has to be someone from our family.
- Than who?
- Someone who deserves it.
Dad and I talked until the rest of the lunch break. I might talk with my grandpa when I come home. He is the only one who can help me. Granny doesn't like Jasmine. For her, everything will be my girlfriend's fault. I need someone who won't let their emotions guide him. That's why my grandpa is the perfect choice. Also, he is the only one available.
After lunch, I went back to my office. I finished my work from yesterday and started with the new one. I read the mail one more time. I had to check some things to make sure I understood them correctly.
- Knock, knock. I'm coming in.
- Grandpa? Can you tell us when you decide to come here?
- Why? Where is the fun?
- I have work to do.
- I won't interrupt.
- Do you want to do something fun?
- Fun for you is not fun for me.
- I need your help.
- For what?
- Have you ever wanted to be a spy?
- A spy? No. Why?
- I need someone who tells me what is happening at home without the others to know. You are the only person for that.
- Really? I appreciate it. What do you want to know?
- What Jasmine is doing. Also, how she is treating Nia.
- No problem.
- It's only temporary. For a week.
- You can count on me for everything.
- Thanks. Do you want coffee? I think I have biscuits here.
- Don't worry. I will go and check on your dad.
- I think he has a meeting now. Why don't you wait?
- Sure. Oh, what is that?
- My trash.
- I love this ad.
- For real? This is spam for me.
- Can I check it out?
- Sure. Here you go.
- This is gold. Think about this.
- I will, but it won't be today. I have enough work to do.
Grandpa stayed in my office for a while. I'm not proud I made him do this, but I had to. Installing cameras is the worst idea ever. I will never do it. I spent the rest of the afternoon working. Later, my dad and I went home for dinner. Nia was setting the table. I wanted to greet her, but Jasmine was here with Charlie. Maybe later. I went to get changed, and then I came back downstairs.
- The food smells delicious. - I said
- Thanks. I hope you will like it.
- I'm sure I will.
- I want a second plate from whatever that is. - grandpa said
- This is chicken with rice. I have a dessert as well. Do you want to try it?
- With your meals, I will get fat.
- Don't worry. One walk will make the food disappear.
- I'll believe you this time. - he said, chuckling
- We need to cook together. Come and sit with us. - granny said
- Thanks, but I know where my place is.
- Please, don't listen to her. She has no idea what she is talking about.
- I won't eat at the same table with her. Employees should eat in another place. - Jasmine said
- Jasmine. You can't talk like that. - I said
- Why do you keep defending her? She is a maid, not your girlfriend.
- This has nothing to do with that.
- Please, don't argue. I'll leave. - Nia said and went back to the kitchen
- Why?
- Why what?
- Why do you hate her? The girl didn't do anything to you. It's enough that she is walking after you every day.
- I have my reasons. You should know them.
- Don't start with this. She can't replace you.
- It doesn't look like that.
- Then what does it look like?
- I prefer to have this conversation with you privately.
- I have nothing to hide. I can't believe you are jealous of her. Look at everything you have.
- But you still look after her.
I didn't say anything. That way is better. I don't need everyone to know about my problems with Jasmine. Honestly, they started when Nia came. I have nothing to do with her, but I don't think my girlfriend understands. When I finished my dinner, I walked out. I will wait for my grandpa to come. I'm sure he has what to tell me. Something must have happened today. I started expecting everything from Jasmine. She is unpredictable. After some time, my grandpa came. I offered him a small walk around the neighborhood. He agreed.
- I'm sorry about dinner.
- It's ok.
- Did you do what I asked for?
- For sure, I did. I felt like a real spy. - he said, chuckling
- Don't forget that this is only for a week.
- It doesn't matter. I will enjoy it while it lasts.
- Good. What happened?
- Nothing much. Most of the time, your grandma was talking with Nia. The girl is avoiding everyone. I think she wants to stay away from the problems. Honestly, I don't blame her. There were times when she was alone. I think she can talk only with you. I tried to ask her some questions. She didn't say anything.
- Even if something is bothering her, she won't say it. How about Jasmine?
- She was with your mom. These two keep talking every day. They don't do anything else.
- Where was Charlie?
- In her room. Jasmine only checks on her if it's time to feed her. I won't be surprised if the baby is crying. Well, there is no one to hear it. She is not good at her job.
- Thanks. You did a great job. I'll return the favor.
- You don't have to do anything. I'm entertained enough.
- I will ask Nia to make you a special meal.
- Leave the girl alone. It's enough what your girlfriend is doing to her.
- Did something happen?
- No, but she is watching her like a hawk.
- She is jealous of her.
- For what? This girl doesn't even have half of the things your girlfriend has.
- Jasmine is not listening.
- I don't want to mess with this, but you can find a better mom for your kid.
- How? I won't take Charlie away from her.
- But she is not doing anything.
- So?
- It's your choice. I won't mess with this.
Grandpa and I continued walking until he felt tired. I spent the rest of the night with Charlie. Jasmine was talking with my mom in her room. I'm glad they are so close, but I wish she could spend more time with the baby. That is the only thing I want from her. It might happen, but no one knows when. I can always ask Nia for help, but Jasmine will never give her the baby. Since she was a babysitter, she knows how to care about kids. It's not like I haven't tried. Probably something happened since she rejected me that day. I hope that her relationship with Jasmine won't get worse.
