Nia's POV:
I have been working in the house for a month. Jasmine is always looking after me. The fact that her boyfriend keeps talking to me is not mine. I didn't make him do it. I don't know why she is so jealous. We are only talking. Nothing else is happening. I have no idea what her problem is. She has warned me a few times to stay away from Noah. I mean, as if I have an interest in him. Since everything that happened with Kevin, I don't want a new boyfriend. I should focus on myself and stay out of trouble. I can't lose this job. There is no way that I will find another such a well-paid job. That's why I have to be careful. Noah is working every day without the weekends. I don't talk to him during the day. He still says to me a few words at dinner and after that. I'm trying not to have too long conversations with him. I know Jasmine is listening to everything we say. This girl has everything, including a baby from him. She doesn't need to worry about me. I have nothing against her. I don't think she will understand that. It's better if I do what I have to do and ignore her. The less I talk to her, the better. She is only a spoiled girlfriend. I don't think Noah would've been with her if it hadn't been for the kid. The problem is not mine. I hope that I don't have to deal with her again.
Two days ago, I went to visit my parents. I had to ask Noah for permission. His mom would've said no. I said that I needed to buy things for food. Technically, I didn't lie. On the way to the house, I stopped at a grocery store to buy something. I can't come here with empty hands. My parents were happy that I was there. Well, mostly, it was my mom. Dad still wants me to go home. There is no better place than home, but I won't do it. I want to work, which means I will stay there.
I woke up an hour ago. Now, I'm baking croissants for breakfast. I have never done this before, but I decided to try. The first ones look good. I will put chocolate on top of them later. In total, I made twenty. I think they will be enough. Mine are not small. Maybe they are too big. Well, it doesn't matter. When I finished baking, I put chocolate on top of them. Later, I went to set the table. My croissants don't need forks, but someone might use one. Then I came back for the food.
- Good morning. Is this our breakfast? - Noah asked
- Yes, why?
- It looks delicious. Can I take one?
- Sure, but can't you wait?
- No. - he said, and we laughed
- I will put them on the table in a minute.
- Do you need help?
- No, I want you to go and sit. Please.
- She is not awake.
- Who said that? I'm hungry. The baby, too.
- The breakfast will be served in a minute, miss.
- Be quick. I don't want to wait. - Jasmine said and left
- Ignore her.
- I'm doing this every day.
- I will leave you. Otherwise, I might cause you more problems.
- Thanks.
I put the croissants on a tray. On the top, I put a bit of powdered sugar. I thought they would look fancier. When I was ready, I took them to the table. Soon, everyone was here. I hope that they will like my meal.
- This is the most delicious croissant that I have ever eaten. Did you make that, Nia? - grandma asked
- Yes.
- I might need the recipe.
- It's not mine. I only followed the instructions.
- This doesn't matter. They turned out heavenly. Sadly, Charlie can't try them.
- After a few years, she can try them.
- My baby won't be fat. I won't give her that. - Jasmine said
- If it depends on you, the baby won't eat anything.
- That is not true.
- You did great. - Noah said
- Thanks. I'll be in the kitchen if anyone needs me. Does anyone want coffee? No one told me anything.
- Thanks, but Noah and I will have ours in the office. - mister Williams said
- No problem.
- Don't make coffee. If someone wants it, they can make it by themselves. - grandma said
- Sure. I'll be in the kitchen. - I said and left
After breakfast, mister Williams and his son left for work. I cleaned the table from breakfast and started with lunch. It's getting harder for me to cook different meals every day. Somehow, I am still doing it. As I was cutting the vegetables, someone walked into the kitchen. I thought it was Jasmine, but no. It was Noah's grandma. She told me to call her granny, even if we aren't related.
- Nia.
- Hey. Do you need something?
- No, I only wanted to check on you. How are you?
- I'm fine. You?
- I'm good.
- Can I help you?
- We need to talk.
- Sure. About what?
- Jasmine.
- No offense, but I don't want to talk about that.
- But I do. My grandson told me what had been going on.
- What exactly did he tell you?
- That Jasmine is going after you.
- That is not true. The girl didn't do anything.
- I don't know why you are defending her. This girl would've been out of here if it hadn't been for the baby.
- Why?
- Because I can't stand her. She only uses my grandson for his money.
- You think?
- I know it. She is not good enough for him. This girl didn't want to work a single day before she got pregnant.
- Maybe she had another vision of working.
- Please. She and my daughter-in-law are always together. I'm sure she told Jasmine to get pregnant so she could stay here.
- Even if what you say is true, she can't get pregnant without Noah.
- I don't know how she did it. I doubt if this kid is his.
- You think Charlie is not Noah's kid.
- I do. They never seemed close. Out of nowhere, she got pregnant from him. I might be old, but I'm not stupid.
- You can't be sure about that.
- I have told him to make a DNA test of the baby. He never did it.
- Don't you think this is his choice?
- I don't know what he is waiting for.
- No offense, but I think your grandson is old enough to make decisions.
- Are you on his side?
- I don't want to participate in this. Look, I need to cook.
- I understand.
This is where we dropped it. What is going on between Noah and Jasmine is not my business. Charlie is their kid. They can do whatever they want with it. I don't want to get involved in this. When the lunch was ready, I took it out of the oven and served it on plates. I set the table and waited for everyone to come. As a maid, I eat in the kitchen. I can't eat with them. Also, I don't want to.
- Nia, why don't you eat with us? - granny asked
- Thanks, but there is no need for that. I'll be in the kitchen if you need me.
- Maids eat there. - Jasmine said
- No one asked about your opinion. - granny said
- So? She should know where she can and can't be in the house.
- Nia can be wherever she wants.
- I will go. - I said
- No, you will stay.
- I agree with my wife. You can stay with us. It's only for lunch, Jasmine. She won't bother you. - grandpa said
- I don't want to bother anyone.
- You are not doing it. Please, don't listen to her. She is spoiled.
- No, I'm not.
- You are here only because of the baby. Otherwise, you would've been out a long time ago. - granny said
- You can't talk to her like that. - miss Williams said
- The same thing applies to you. Both of you are the same.
- I won't stay away from my granddaughter.
- Your granddaughter? I wonder who she slept with before calling Noah to tell him she was pregnant.
- That's not true. I didn't sleep with anyone else besides Noah. - Jasmine said
- Yes, sure. He takes care of the baby more than you do.
- I take care of it.
- Then where is it?
- Sleeping in her bed.
- So you left her alone?
- She can't be with me all the time.
- Sure. It's the same old excuse.
- I will go. - I said and left
I didn't want to be in the middle of this. I don't know how they live together. It looks like they argue every day. This is terrible. I wouldn't have survived. I ate my lunch in the kitchen. In the afternoon, I washed their clothes. Later, I went to the grocery store for some products. I needed some fresh air. I don't know if I can survive this every day. After an hour, I was at the house. It's better if I focus on dinner and not think about them. I made a dessert as well. I'm sure they will like it.
- The kitchen smells like heaven.
- Oh, hey.
- Hi. How was your day?
- Decent.
- Did something happen?
- No.
- Nia.
- Your grandma hates Jasmine. - I said, and he laughed
- Tell me something I don't know.
- I don't know.
- Did she talk with you?
- Yes. I believe you have told her some things.
- Maybe.
- Why?
- Because I thought that if she talked with you, this might make you feel better.
- Thanks, but there was no need for that. It made me feel worse.
- I'm sorry. That wasn't my intention.
- Look, I'm here to work. I'm not part of this family's relations.
- I would've warned you if I knew you would come here.
- Why?
- So you could find a better job. You will listen to daily arguments. Mostly, they are between my grandma, mom, and Jasmine.
- I will get used to this.
- You have to. Well, you can always quit.
- No, thanks. I'm happy with my job.
- I will try to help you with everything I can.
- There is no need for that. I can deal with it.
- How?
- By staying away from it.
- Good luck. It won't be easy.
- It's not mission impossible.
- Maybe you can get close to my grandpa. He avoids the problems as well.
- I will be focused on my job, ok?
- Fair enough. Do you need help with dinner?
- No, I'm done.
- How did you learn to cook?
- With my mom. She always has time for me.
- That is good.
- She is my best friend.
- I wish I could say the same about my mom.
- Why?
- I have been closer to my dad.
- I see. Maybe you can talk with her.
- Yes, but I don't need her now. I can do everything alone.
- I'm sorry.
- It's ok.
I talked with Noah for some time. Luckily, Jasmine wasn't around. I don't need her comments. Honestly, I have noticed that he is closer to his dad. Maybe something has happened between him and his mom. I can't imagine my life without my mom. She has helped me a lot, especially after I lost Lizzy. This family doesn't seem that close. At least, this is how I see it. There is a chance that I'm wrong. Well, they argue a lot. I'm not sure that it's something normal. It might be for them. The problem is not mine. I will focus on my job. I hope that I won't get involved in their drama.
