Nia's POV:
For the past six months, I didn't do anything. The doctor promised to see what happened with Lizzy. There was nothing. She checked all the babies in the hospital the day I gave birth. None of them was mine. This means that someone took it. I can't find all the people in town. This will take me forever. Also, it has passed half a year. I don't know if I will be able to recognize mine. She must have changed so much. During this time, I was at home. I didn't want to go out or meet anyone. Well, I got bored. I decided that this was not the end of the world. That's why I decided to find a job. I won't be a babysitter again. I can't take care of kids anymore. Now, this will be too hard for me. That's why I looked at some job alerts and found one for something like a maid. They need a person who can clean, cook, wash the dishes and the clothes. I think I can do that. Soon, I will have an interview. I called the woman yesterday to confirm the date. If I get the job, I should live with them. From her words, I understood that this is a big family. It's not like this matters. I will still do my job. I don't know what my salary will be. Well, I wanted a job that I could do well. This might be the one for me. I hope that I will pass my interview and get the job.
Today is my interview for the new job. I will be a girl for everything. I guess this is what a maid does. I don't mind. All I want is to occupy myself with something. I can't sit and do nothing all day. I have been doing this for the past six months. Lizzy is gone. I should accept it. I hope that at least she is alive. This is all I want to know, even if she is not with me. Well, I would love to see her one more time. Only to know that she is well.
I woke up and went to get ready for the day. I will put some effort into my style. When I was ready, I went to the bathroom. I need to look good today. I didn't want to put in even a minimum effort for the past six months. I will change that. One woman called when I saw the interview. Probably, I will talk with her. After some time, I went for breakfast. I used to eat a lot before. I was doing everything for Lizzy. Now, I don't see a reason for that.
- Are you ready for the new job? - dad asked
- I think I am.
- I'm sure you will get it.
- This is what I hope.
- You can always stay a bit more time at home.
- No, I can't do this. It's enough what I did for six months. I want to occupy myself with something.
- Take care of yourself. That is all I want from you.
- Don't worry. Nothing will happen to me. I promise you.
- Let's say that I trust you.
- Don't you?
- If you are there, who will take care of you?
- Dad, I'm not a little kid.
- But you are my little kid.
- I will be fine. I won't do much. Will you let me go?
- Do I have a choice?
- No. - I said, chuckling
- Can I come to see you?
- I don't know. I will live in their house.
- A no would've been better.
- I will come to see you whenever I can.
- Leave him alone. He will never stop worrying for you, even if you two are in the same room. - mom said
- Really?
- Yes. He is your dad. What do you expect?
- Nothing.
- You know that I am here. - dad said
- We know. - I said
- Ok, enough talking. You have to eat. You can't go there hungry. - mom said
- I will miss this.
- Then don't accept the job. - dad said
- That won't happen.
I talked with my parents for some time. I went to take some things with me. Later, I walked out. The house is not close to mine. I took a taxi. Otherwise, I will be late. I talked with a woman on the phone, but I have no idea how she looks. When I arrived in front of the house, I looked around. This is a big house. These people must be wealthy. If only I had such a place to live. Well, I don't need it. I rang the bell and waited. Soon, an old lady appeared.
- Miss Williams?
- Yes. Who is asking?
- Nia. I'm here for my interview.
- What interview?
- The one for which we talked on the phone.
- I didn't talk with anyone.
- What? I have an interview today.
- For what job are you applying?
- A maid.
- I will kill her. Come in. You are probably looking for my daughter-in-law.
- Maybe. I talked with a woman on the phone.
- Wait here. I will call her.
- Thanks.
I sat at one table. I like the house. The decoration is good. Maybe it's a bit too much at places. This is not my business. Soon, one woman came. Probably, I have talked with her.
- Miss Williams?
- Yes. You must be Nia.
- Correct.
- Tell me what you can do.
- Everything one woman is supposed to do.
- Can you cook, clean, and wash clothes and dishes?
- Yes, I can.
- What was your previous job?
- I was a babysitter.
- Why did you quit?
- For personal reasons.
- This is not an interview question. - the old lady said
- I decide this.
- You should've told us that you plan to hire someone new.
- Why? No one would've agreed.
- If you want, I can leave.
- No, no, no. I'm not done with you.
- No problem.
- You need to move in here. Traveling is unacceptable. We need you all the time.
- Sure. I'll be here.
- Hey, I was looking for. Who is she? - a girl around my age asked
- Our new maid.
- Am I hired?
- Don't you think you have to talk to everyone about this? - the old lady asked
- No, I don't.
- Please, I want to have this job. I'll do anything. - I said
- You are hired. Move in. You're starting tomorrow.
- Really? Thank you.
- Don't get hyped up, girl. Things won't be as good as they look. - the old lady said
- This doesn't matter.
- What can you cook? - miss Williams asked
- I haven't tried every recipe, but I can try something new.
- Good. I will expect you for dinner. You can go now.
That was the weirdest interview I have ever had. Also, it was so short. I can feel the tension between the women. I won't mess with this. I'm there to work, not to gossip. I walked home, straight to my room. I started packing my things. After some time, my parents came in. Dad didn't look happy. I know he is worried, but I will be fine.
- Dad, nothing will happen to me.
- I know, but I won't see you every day.
- I want to get distracted.
- Hopefully, you can do it.
- How is the place? Did you like it?
- The house is like a mansion. These people must be wealthy.
- At least you will be in a good place.
- I think so. I will have a room.
- You can't expect to sleep with someone else. - dad said, chuckling
- Don't worry. I don't want to do it.
- No one will let you.
- Did you meet everyone? - mom asked
- No. One old lady opened the door. She can be my grandma. - I said, and they laughed
- I'm sure it's not her.
- No, it wasn't her. The woman who interviewed me was there. Also, one girl. She looked my age. Maybe one or two years older.
- Good. Someone else?
- No. The interview was short.
- She probably asked you only what she wanted to know.
- Yes.
- I'm glad that you will do something you like.
- It doesn't look like she likes it. - dad said
- Can I answer the questions myself?
- I'm only saying.
- Like always.
- Is it that bad?
- No. I have to go now.
- Do you need a ride?
- I would love to. Well, if you come, you won't let me go.
- I promise. This won't happen.
- If you say so.
I let my dad drive me to the house. This time, he didn't talk much. He wants to keep me safe, but this can't happen. I walked to the house. The woman who interviewed me showed me my room. I won't complain at all. This is a great room. When I ordered my things, I went to the kitchen. Miss Williams told me what I should cook for dinner. I found everything in the fridge and started with the main meal. I was done with everything in two hours. Later, I went to set the table. I took the utensils and glasses on a tray. I was about to go through the door when I bumped into someone.
- I'm so sorry. - I said and looked up
- It's ok. Do you need help? - a boy asked
- No. I'm fine.
- I'll open the door for you. - he said and did it
- Thanks.
- I haven't seen you before. Have we met?
- I don't think so. I came here a few hours ago.
- Why? I don't get it.
- To work.
- What?
- I'm working here.
- Since when?
- Today.
- Who hired you?
- Miss Williams?
- Grandma?
- No, it was a bit younger woman.
- This is probably my mom. Let me help you.
- Thanks, but you don't have to worry. I can deal with it.
- Can I know how you got this job?
- With an interview.
- Where did you find it?
- Online.
- Interesting.
- Is there a problem?
- No, no. Everything is fine. Don't worry.
- I can leave, but I want to have a job.
- Why this one?
- I dropped out of university. I realized this wasn't my thing.
- I didn't even go to one. - he said, and we laughed
- You have a great house.
- Thanks. Many people live here.
- Well, I met only four. You are the fourth one.
- I wonder who the others were.
- Your mom, grandma, and one girl.
- Jasmine?
- I don't know. We didn't talk. I had to go home.
- I should probably warn you that the girl wants too many things.
- No problem. That's why I'm here.
- Hey, you are here? Is dinner ready? - the girl asked
- Yes, it is. I will finish setting the table.
- Less talking and more working. Understood?
- Yes, miss.
- Jasmine. Behave.
- No, she is right. Excuse me. - I said and left
If she is his girlfriend, I better stay away from the boy. I don't want to have problems with anyone here. After all, I want to keep my job. I am here to work, not to talk with anyone. At dinner, I met everyone. I was right. Jasmine is his girlfriend. There is also a baby in the house. I wish I had known this earlier. Well, I won't take care of it. This is not part of my job. I'm a maid, not a babysitter. All I have are simple chores. It's better if I stick to them. Miss Williams told me about my salary. For a week, I will have more than I used to make for a month. I hope that I won't have problems here.
