Old Enemy

1100 Words
Rhett     "Dawn, he is our mate" I heard the beast say. What was she talking about? I tried to crawl away from her, but her scary shadow had me surrounded. I looked at her, and her silver eyes were calling to me. There was a weird feeling in my chest, and I didn't know how to explain it.          "Who are you?" she asked. I tried to look everywhere for a way to escape, but I was frozen on the spot.          "Um...my name is Rhett" I replied, clearing my throat. I had to admit, I was a little intimidated by her. I could see her look down, as if paying attention to something.          "I can't let you out right now. You don't know what kind of man he is. We have to get to know him first," she said.          "Who are you talking to?" I asked, curiously. She looked at me and smiled.          "My human wants to meet you. But I still don't trust you, despite you being my mate" she mentioned, and the word mate had me a little confused. I chuckled nervously, and I wasn't sure where I got the adrenaline from, but I took off running.          The woods seemed to never end, and I was trying to find an escape. I didn't know where I was going. This was all new to me. I needed to find at least somewhere to hide. My father had warned me about these beasts, and he was not wrong. She looks beautiful, but dangerous.          I reached a big castle at the end of the woods. Its size and its architecture was incredible. I stood there admiring it, when suddenly I felt a weight on me, making me fall to the ground. I tried to get up, but I saw her beautiful, honey-colored eyes and I was hypnotized. My heart was pounding inside my chest, but I realized it was not the beast from earlier.     I tried to look around and see where she was. "Don't even bother, it's me" she said and looking up at her, I could see a streak of silver in her eyes.     "Who are you and what do you want?"      "The better question is, who are you really, and what are you doing in my kingdom?" she asked, holding my arms above my head while she straddled me. For such a small girl, she was strong.          "I told you, my name is Rhett"     "I don't care about your name. You told me that already. I can smell and feel that you are a human. So I am asking you again, what are you doing in my kingdom?" she asked again. I had no words to say. I was afraid to say the wrong thing and have her kill me here in an instant.      "I don't know exactly how I got here, but there was a bright light with smoke in it, and I was too curious, and decided to check it out," I lied, couldn't let her find out I knew how to get here.      She studied me cautiously while her eyes widened in shock. "You found a portal?" she asked, "you were not supposed to. Humans are banned from coming here"     She got off me and stood up, extending her hand for me to grab. As she pulled me up, I stumbled and we fell again on the ground, and this time I was on top of her. We gazed at each other, frozen in the moment. Not caring about anything else.      I heard some shouts, and when I looked up, there were more people coming our way. I quickly ran into the woods and hid behind a tree. I could see the look of disappointment in her eyes as she looked my way, but I didn't care. My father has told me they are the enemy, so I would abide by his word.     As I saw them approach her, two identical men were embracing her. I wondered who they were, and a sudden wave of jealousy snuck in my whole soul. Why would I feel this way when I only met her today? And her saying I was her mate sounded crazy.          I have heard stories about this family. How their daughter had met a human hunter and claimed him as her mate, or how her uncle's heart was healed by her. Could she be a part of this family?          "You found her" his deep voice sounded behind me.      "Yes, father. I did. Why would you want me to hunt her?" I asked, suddenly feeling nauseous at the idea.     "Her family has done so much damage, Rhett. I have escaped unscathed, but I have lost a lot of my men thanks to them" there was venom in his voice. How much can he hate them, when they look like they are just living their lives?     “I think this is a bad idea, father. We should just go back home and forget about them. You have for twenty one years and now you decide to want to come back and take revenge on them. I am not sure if I want to be a part of it” I said, while hearing a growl behind me and I knew he had shifted.      “No time to back up, boy. I never asked to be turned, or even held as a slave by her uncle. Do you think it’s fun to see your mother look at me like a monster since the first day I shifted in front of her? To see her fearful face as I was shifting into one of them? No, you are going to be a part of this and you are going to help me,” he ordered.       I have heard him talk about them with such an obsession that one day my mom just had enough and left us behind. She had abandoned us, and I resented her for that. I was never at fault of what my father did or became.      “How did this happen to you, father?” I asked curiously.      “Her uncle had me as a slave and marked me. I had no idea that mark would end up turning me into one of them. But now that I know my strength, it will be easier to fight them and finish my job. I want to take over this kingdom and have the humans reign both worlds”       I don’t know what would happen, but I knew one thing. That I would see her again, and I knew she would find me.
