Chapter 3 The Emperor at the Border

1015 Words
The news spread through the kingdom faster than wildfire. Before sunset, everyone knew by midnight, nobody was speaking about anything else. The Emperor had arrived fear moved through the capital like an invisible plague. Market vendors abandoned their stalls early, merchants closed shops before dark, tavern conversations dropped into whispers whenever soldiers entered, mothers hurried children indoor and even the city bells seemed quieter than usual. No official announcement had been made none was necessary. The name alone was enough "Lucien." Seraphina spent most of the next morning moving through the palace like a ghost. The atmosphere had changed overnight, servants whispered in corners, messengers ran through corridors carrying sealed documents, guards stood straight, nobles moved faster.Everyone looked afraid and nobody wanted to admit it. The council chamber had become a battlefield again.Only this time nobody argued about taxes or harvests. They argued about survival"he has no right crossing our borders!" "He crossed them because we cannot stop him!" "We still have soldiers!" "And he has an army!" The shouting echoed against stone walls. A red-faced noble slammed both hands onto the table"We should fight!" Several people laughed, not because it was funny but because it was hopeless. The laughter died quickly. King Adrian sat at the head of the table, listening, watching a king trying to find a path where none existed. Seraphina remained silent, listening revealed more than speaking ever could. Especially when people were afraid and everyone was afraid. One general pointed toward a map. "His forces have established camp less than two days from the capital." The room went still. Two days, not weeks, not months. Two days!!! Another noble swallowed visibly. "How many men?" The general hesitated. That alone was unsettling. Finally he answered. "Enough." Nobody asked for clarification. Everyone understood "Enough." Enough to destroy cities, enough to end kingdoms, enough to make resistance meaningless. The meeting dissolved hours later without solutions only fear, only uncertainty, only waiting and waiting, Seraphina discovered, was worse than action. Later that afternoon she escaped the palace not officially, not openly. She simply left through a side entrance accompanied by two guards and a hooded cloak. She needed air, needed distance, needed something that wasn't another room filled with terrified politicians. The capital was crowded despite the tension, people gathered in groups talking, speculating. Rumors had become a second currency and Lucien was all anyone discussed. As Seraphina walked through the market square, she listened. A baker lowered his voice "My cousin served near the eastern territories." The men around him leaned closer The baker glanced around nervously"He said Lucien executed one of his own generals." Someone frowned"For what?" "Stealing grain from villagers." the baker replied The group exchanged surprised looks. A blacksmith snorted "That's not cruelty." The baker shrugged"Still happened."An older merchant joined the conversation "You're all fools if you think that's the whole story." Everyone turned toward him. The merchant crossed his arms "I've traded inside the Empire." Silence followed. Trade within Lucien's lands was rare. "What was it like?" someone asked The merchant hesitated "Organized." Several people frowned. "That's it?" "Organized." He looked uncomfortable "The roads are safer than ours." Nobody responded. "The markets are full." Silence. "The villages prosper." More silence. The merchant sighed. "I didn't see starving children." That statement landed heavily because everyone standing there had seen starving children. Another man shook his head,"No empire becomes that powerful without blood." The merchant didn't argue. Instead he said quietly, "I didn't say he was kind." A chill moved through the group. Seraphina continued walking. Every conversation created more questions not answers. Near the city fountain, another crowd had gathered. This group wasn't discussing armies they were discussing Lucien himself. A young soldier sat among them.Judging by his uniform, he had recently returned from the northern border. His audience hung onto every word. "You saw him?" someone asked The soldier nodded, just once. The crowd immediately leaned closer. Seraphina did too. "What was he like?",they asked The soldier was silent for several moments. Then he answered, "Quiet." The crowd blinked. That wasn't the answer they expected. "Quiet?" The soldier nodded, "He barely spoke." Someone laughed nervously, "That's what frightened you?" The young man looked up. His face had gone pale. "No." His voice dropped. "The frightening part was everyone else." The laughter stopped. "What do you mean?" The soldier swallowed. "When he entered camp..." His hands tightened. "Nobody moved." A strange feeling settled in Seraphina's stomach. The soldier continued "His officers stood straighter." "The servants stopped talking." "The horses stopped making noise." Someone scoffed. "That's ridiculous." The soldier met his gaze,"I know." A pause followed. "But it happened." Nobody spoke. The soldier stared at the ground "I've seen kings." His voice was quiet. "I've seen princes." Another pause. "None of them felt like that." A cold wind swept across the square. Seraphina left before the conversation continued, she wasn't sure why. Perhaps because she suddenly didn't want to hear more but the rumors followed her anyway Every street, every corner, every conversation. Some called Lucien a tyrant, others called him a genius. Some claimed he was cursed, ohers claimed he was blessed by the gods. One woman whispered that he never smiled while another insisted she had seen him laughing with children during a festival. One man claimed Lucien had personally burned an entire city while another swore Lucien had rebuilt three.Nothing matched, nothing aligned. The contradictions frustrated Seraphina, how could one man be so many things at once? As evening approached, she returned to the palace. The sun painted the sky gold and crimson yet the beauty felt distant, unimportant. The kingdom waited, the court waited, her father waited and somewhere beyond the northern hills...,the Emperor waited too. That night Seraphina stood alone on her balcony, the city glowed beneath her .Thousands of lights, thousands of lives, thousands of people whose future might already be decided. She wrapped her arms around herself. For the first time since hearing his name, she allowed herself to ask the question she had avoided. Who are you, Lucien?, Monster?, Tyrant?,Savior, Conqueror?, Murderer?or King? None of the stories fit together and somehow..that frightened her more than any single answer could. Far beyond the capital walls, beneath a sky full of stars, thousands of imperial campfires burned across the horizon like a second city, waiting, watching, getting closer.
