One
Lizzy.
My alarm blared loudly waking me up from my deep sleep where I dreamt about me living the dream life as a working rich accountant. I grudgingly picked up my phone from my bed side table checking to see what the time was, it was currently 7am in the morning and that meant I had to get my ass up for my job as a barrister at Marcos’s Cafe.
I sat upright on my bed yawning loudly my bed hair falling into my eyes, looking around my worn down studio apartment I sighed in disappointment at my current lifestyle. I’ve not exactly lived the best life ever since I was born.
My mum was a stripper and lived all her life stripping in various clubs to care for me, I didn’t know who my dad was.. Well my mum never ever mentioned his name so I had no idea who he was.. I studied really hard and passed my college exams and was able to study accounting in NYU. College life was fun, even though I had a really though childhood with no friends or family.. College was my way of escape.
That was where I met my one and only best friend Tamara. Tamara and I have been through everything together, she was my shoulder to cry on and my only family. Although she was the complete opposite of me I still loved her a lot and we totally got each other.
I pulled off the worn out T-shirt I was currently putting on deciding to take a really cold shower since the heater was faulty. My apartment was on the very far side of the city, the place with cheap rents and affordable prices of food products.. People like me couldn’t afford to live in the upper east side of town, sometimes dreaming about it seems too unreal.
I immediately got out of the shower, brushing my wavy brown hair to remove the tangles putting on some random skinny jeans and an old hoodie that belonged to my boyfriend. I put up my hair in a ponytail since I was going to work pretty hard today, Marcos cafe had a lot of customers on Monday’s and today was Monday!..
My shift ends around 12pm in the afternoon and after that I have to go for my shift as a delivery man.. While girls my age had life fulfilled jobs as models, nurses, and so on I was different.. I’ve worked as a cleaner, a news paper attendant and right now I still haven’t gotten any decent jobs just so I can make ends meet..
To work in any New York firms your resume must be extremely top notch plus connections and I had neither. Back in college I used to think just by having a degree all my life problems would be solved but after graduation reality gave me a huge slap on the face!.
I ran out of my apartment not forgetting to take my necessities like my phone, purse and bag not forgetting to lock my studio apartment. Theft was very rampant in my neighborhood and although I didn’t exactly have a furnished apartment I’d still love it if my house wasn’t burgled.
I got to train station right on time after running entering the train before the door closed. The train was already filled up with people, and I didn’t have any choice but to stand next to other people. Taking the train to work was much cheaper than taking a cab or the bus and also much faster since it’ll be able to beat the crazy New York traffic.
I stuck my EarPods in my ears listening to my Spotify playlist to at least kill time before I got to work drowning myself in music. After a while the train stopped and I got out, as usual tons of people filtered in and out on a Monday morning. I still had enough time before I got to work so I took my time on the road walking to Marcos Cafe.
“Good morning lizzy”
“Hi Joseph, nice to see you at work bright and early” I answered with a smile as I slipped on my apron.
“Well look who’s all rainbows and sunshine this morning?” Joseph teased with a wink
“You think? I supposed I look terrible though” I muttered with a look
“Well, apart from the messy ponytail you’re alright” he answered looking me up causing me to laugh.
“Is Marcos in?” I asked as I cleaned up the shelf and coffee mugs.
“Yup, he came in extra early today.. “ Joseph muttered as he mopped the floors
“Hmm weird” I answered with a shrug
The doors suddenly opened to see another of Marcos cafe worker walk in. And as usual she was twenty minutes late.
“Welcome Tanya, we’re so glad that you blessed us with your presence this morning your highness” Joseph greeted his voice filled with sarcasm
“Oh shut up Joseph and do what you normally do best, mopping floors” Tanya insulted putting on her apron..
“Yeesh Tanya, easy on the bruise there tiger” Joseph teased with a hand to his heart.
Tanya just hissed rolling her eyes and ignoring us as she busied herself on her phone.
Customers had started filtering in, the smell of coffee filling the air. My hands were already starting to ache due to the amount of lattes I had already made in a couple of hours.
Marcos really needed the extra help but he was the stingy type and he refused to recruit more workers so the labor was extremely hard since we were just three..
“Tanya, Tanya..hello??..” I called her but she just plainly ignored me.
Rudeee!
“Hello oo?? Tanya can you just “
“What?!” She snapped a scowl on her face.
“Can you stop looking at your phone for one second, as you can see we have a lot of customers and we need the extra help” I said gesturing to the customers in the cafe.
“Is that why you wouldn’t stop screaming my name like an animal?” She insulted
What’s up with this b***h exactly?
I gave a tired sigh answering her “Tanya, please help out.. you can press your phone later” I said giving her a pleading look..
She rolled her eyes picking out a coffee mug. “Whatever”
I let out a relived sigh, my eyes met with Joseph’s and he gave me a sympathetic look. He knew how annoying Tanya was, it’s not his fault she’s just a frustrated person. I continued with my work counting down the hours until I was done when the door opened.
The air in the cafe immediately became charged and I wondered why. I noticed two tall men in powerful suits walk towards one of the sit booths in the cafe with all eyes on them.
Uhn, wonder who they are..
Marcos immediately came out of his office and upon noticing the men with a surprised look on his face walked towards me in a haste.
Tanya started adjusting her outfit about to walk towards them when Marcos immediately dragged her back to the counter.
“Hey!” She yelled in anger
“And where do you think you’re going young lady?” Marcos asked with a hard look on his face.
“To work, obviously” she answered with a duhh tone.
“Oh so now you want to work?” Marcos asked sarcastically
“What do you mean by that?” She asked with a scoff
“I mean that you should sit your ass here while lizzy goes to ask them for their orders instead” he replied
At the mention of my name I looked up from what I was doing in surprise.
“Marcos what’re you talking about?” I asked
“Lizzy go and ask them for their orders” he repeated
“But why me? Tanya obviously wants to do it” I said not wanting to go over there
“No way, I’m not allowing this dumbass to ruin what would cost my reputation in this business. Now hurry up, I’m not paying you to dilly dally” he answered walking back into his office
“Lucky b***h” Tanya muttered
I ignored her taking in a deep breath, fixing myself up and picking up my notepad walking towards the men in powerful suits wondering who exactly they were and hoping that nothing goes wrong.
