Chapter 1
“Ruby!!” My mother shouted from the kitchen for the third time today morning. “Get out of bed you slob, we’re going to be late.” If I knew my mother any better, I knew her patience was running low. I clenched my teeth in annoyance the park was the last place I ever wanted to go. I hated these types of functions, I was always forced to go to because of her. Forcing my body to get up I threw myself out of bed. It took a while to adjust but soon I was very aware of everything. Back bent I walked to the bathroom. Upon arriving in the bathroom I decided on taking a steaming hot shower. The warm water hit my bare skin running down my body instantly giving relief. After my relaxing shower I walked out the bathroom feeling ten times more relived then before. I got dressed in one of my favourite black jeans with a black-blue t-shirt and sneakers. Satisfied with how I looked, I walked out my room heading towards the kitchen. Descending from the stairs, I heard chattering and giggles. Popping my head first, I noticed my mother on a phone call must be one of a friend of hers. Taking a seat in front of my mother I grabbed the apple from one of the baskets besides me. Eating up the apple I watched my mother end her conversation, placing the phone my mother glared at me. Shaking it off I continued eating my apple. As I proceed I still felt her eyes on me, looking up I locked eyes with my mother. Mouthing a what, she simply sighed then walked out the room. I just continued with my apple not bothering to pester her about anything, with the way I was I had already done a lot to piss her off. Her footsteps soon echoed through the kitchen walls again turning my head, my mother stood by the door. “Come on, let’s go.” she walked ahead as I followed, finishing up my apple. I sat in the passengers seat as my mother drove in silence. The silence was a bit choking to be honest but like always I did nothing about it. I was some what a rebellious, no longer the little angel she once adore when I was young, that position had been taken over by my younger sister, Annie. I watched as the building, tress and people faded away as we kept moving forward. Letting out an exhausted breathe I leaned my head against the window. I had woken up too early at an ungodly hour that was before 8am. This time around I yawned my mother turned her head slightly looking at me, she then tore gaze away back to the road the silent drive went on. After a few minutes the park came in sight, my mother parked the car, no struggle on finding a spot. That’s always on being super early to a function. I carried the baskets following my mother down the pavement towards the benches. The more we got towards the benches the more I started to suspect we were the only humans here. My mother never knew the meaning of fashionably late. I kept impatiently staring at my watch, it was either time was moving slow or people are always late. I sat besides my mother and Mrs. Green who happened to be our friendly old grandma each neighborhood had. She was the most sweetest person around, and friendly. After a while some people started showing up, cars pulling up into the car park. The two woman beside me left alone to start welcoming the guests. Resting my head on the bench I watched as people slowly began to show up, with each passing minute more people showed up. Deciding on stretching my legs I went for a little walk. My little walk was a bit lonely, only met trees, scrubs or little tiny kids running around who did not want to talk of course. Walking back the way I came, my eyes caught a glimpse of the only person I had not expected here. Esther Blair stood with a group of friends I guess, looking perfect as any day I admired from afar. Dressed in a prefect red skirt that highly complimented her and an off shoulder blouse, she flipped her hair back laughing. I didn’t know her personally just saw her around college and from the first time I saw her, I got a crush on her. She seemed charming, fun and lovely and a bonus on super friendly. Her looks were beyond comparison. Light brown eyes that shined in the sunlight, dark hair and an amazing body. Feeling like a creep I tore my gaze from her walking back to the benches, I did not want to be caught day dreaming. As I walked different ages people greeted me, everyone seemed to be having a good time but only one person, me. Watching everyone enjoy themselves I popped my headsets into my ears, then soon music filled my ears. The day flew by, soon the afternoon sun shone upon us all and now lunch had started being served. Serving myself I got some chips and an apple for after the meal, eating full course meals in public was not my thing. Everyone sat in groups, either friend groups, couples or family groups, I obviously sat alone. Halfway through my meal, someone sat right across from me. The first thing to catch my attention was the red skirt, the same one I saw earlier. Looking up I locked eyes with no other than Esther. Blinking a couple of times I reassured myself it was indeed not a dream. Meeting my gaze her lips curled up into a small smiled, that I shyly returned. Lowering her face she began having her meal, so did I. Just the thought of her seated across from me made my heart dance, do back flips what ever. With a light smile on my face I shoved the chips down my throat. After I had finished my meal I began eating my apple while Esther was on her phone. Guessing she didn’t want to talk I took my eyes else where. As I was staring at the trees I heard her clear her throat, taking all my attention I faced her. She smiled brightly, “Hey Ruby King.” my whole body in full shock, how did she know my name.
