Chapter 22

970 Words
I spent some more time with Charlotte before Annie woke up and joined us with a bowl of cereal in her hands. Her messy hair covered some part of her face, her eyes still looked drowsy. “So you knew Ruby was gay before all of us?” Annie asked Her spoon pointing towards Charlotte, who gave her a nod yes. “I had to find out the hard way, I still have the images imprinted in my head.” Charlotte nodded her head to the side as though she was trying to shake off the images, This got Annie’s attention, “How did you find out.” she asked, licking her spoon clean of all the milk that was dripping from it. “She was with some girl, the girl was practically naked and your sister here was going—” I elbowed her making her groan in pain. That did happen but that’s not how she found out I wat gay, I told her she just walked in once while I was with Natalie. “Stop lying Charlotte, I told you myself.” she huffed then remained quiet. “Now I see why you guys would never be a couple. Anyway sister, are you dating one of those friends, Esther or Eunice.” she looked at me waiting for an answer, when I was about to reply Charlotte bet me at it. “She wished.” Charlotte mumbled in a mocking tone, I sat there glaring at her. She was right, all I did was wish nothing could ever happen. I sighed heavily as I sat in silence, nothing would ever happen, we all knew that so why was it hard for the heart to forget and let go, couldn’y it just stop hurting. After a couple minutes of silence, Annie got up and left us alone. I was lost in my thoughts about everything. “Ruby I’m sorry.” I heard Charlotte’s voice whisper a mix of regret and worry filled the room. I turned my head facing her, her eyes searched mine like they were searching for an emotion. “There’s nothing to be sorry about, it’s all true. I have no chance with any of them.” my voice came out raspy which surprised Charlotte. “You do have a chance with Eunice, have you forgotten.” She looked at me with confusion, I shrugged on the couch leaving my hands in my pocket. “She has a boyfriend, I saw her Sunday kissing him.” I said nonchalantly, my eyes darted on the screen now. “Ruby..” I stopped her before she could continue, her voice was full worried, I turned looking straight in her eyes. “Charlotte, don’t okay I’m fine. Nothing serious ever happened that she knows of, I’m cool with just being her friend.” She exhaled roughly placing her body next to me, she got a hold of my hand. “Okay I’ll leave it, but if you ever want to talk, I’m here for you.” she squeezed my hand lightly, a smile elapsed on my face. I really appreciated Charlotte, whenever I needed a push she would but she always knew where to stop. Lunch was blissful, Charlotte kept making jokes through out the whole thing, it was only us three. Eventually after it was just us two, Annie went to a friend’s again. Spending too much time with one person is harmful and becomes tiresome, but with Charlotte neither of those ever happened. When I’m with her I actually have fun and forget everything, she is definitely good for my health. We sat leg crossed on the floor of my room, I watched her collapse on the floor laughing her lungs out. “You’re over doing this you know.” I spoke but her laughter didn’t fade one bit, I waited patiently for her to stop, she would right. Another minute passed and she didn’t stop, it was definitely annoying now. “Carrot, you’re really become annoying.” her laughter started fading away. She sat up again wiping away her tears, with a smile on her face. “I think I’ve laughed for the week.” she said fixing her hair. “Yes you did. Now what did you want to talk about.” Her face fell into a frown then it was quickly replaced by a fake smile, something was really up. She cleared her throat before she spoke, “You really don’t have to agree, it’s just a proposal.” I gave her a questioning look. “I was thinking, I could start staying with you in your apartment, I practically already live with you. I’ll help with the bills and stuff.” I could see her playing with her fingers, she was nervous really nervous. My face grew into a frown, did she really thinking I would say no. “You know you could have just moved in, and I’d have been okay with it, no need to work yourself out. of course you can, I need company.” Charlotte jumped me making my body whole rest on the ground, she kept repeating Thank you over and over while I giggled. Charlotte and I stayed in my room goofing off the whole afternoon. When the sky started getting dark I and Charlotte went for a walk, I was escorting her back home plus I needed a walk. She was jumping up and down on the side walk, pouring her heart out while I listened carefully. Some minutes later we were at her front door, she gave me a hug before her body disappeared into the house, I turned my body walking back home. The walk back home was quiet and refreshing, just some miles away I could see my parent’s cars in the driveway. I walked at the same speed arriving at the front door of the house, I turned the knob letting myself in. My nose was greeted with a heavenly scent of food, I grim foolishly at the thought of food, I was starving.
