For a moment we stood there in a stalemate until an invisible hand brushed my arm. I jumped a little, Alith saw the sudden movement and pulled the trigger. But I was already falling. Ace snuck in between us and shoved me out of the 2nd story window. Alith's bullet fell useless to the ground as I plummeted to my imminent demise.
I was in slow motion.
Down
Down
Down
Now I really know what they mean when someone says their life flashes before their eyes.
FLASH
All the things you've done.
All the people you've loved.
All the things you wish you did.
All the people you should've loved better.
FLASH
The ground was coming on fast. I squeezed my eyes shut and braced for pain. But the ground never came. Pain and bruising yes, but no ground and no death.
"He must have had a rough childhood." Said the person holding me vibrating my head on their chest. I recognized the crisp smooth British accent and the tree like smell. I opened my eyes and threw my hands around his neck.
"Zedo!"
This time he hugged me back, pulling me closer like he was never going to let anyone hurt me again.
I'm so sorry." He mumbled in my ear. "It's all my fault I dragged you into this whole thing. When the car fell in the water I thought... I swam over and you weren't in the car. They said you're Ace but I knew..."
I shrugged cutting him off.
"That was actually Ace."
He looked confused for a moment so I changed the subject.
"How are you alive?"
He straightened his back "it takes a lot more to kill me then a little bit of water."
His earpiece started buzzing and he began pointing at the room I fell out of and saying a bunch of numbers that made no sense.
He seemed to realize I was still there hugging him and he grabbed both my hands gently.
"I have to go but if you ever need anything and I mean anything find me, I owe you one."
I was about to protest when the most brilliant of all brilliant ideas came to my mind. He stared to walk away but I was still holding his hand and yanked him back. I stood on my tiptoes and gently pressed my lips on his. His eyes widened but he didn't seem mad. Fireworks exploded in my mind reaching all the way to the tips of my fingers and toes. Maybe this hat did help you find true love.
All too soon I pulled away, "Now we're even."
He shook his head and dashed away to catch a criminal leaving me alone outside by the river.
