“Where is Zedo?”
He bit his lip in mock concentration,
“Do you mean Maximilian?”
I massaged my temples
“No, I mean Zedo the police officer.”
He chuckled again, a sound I was beginning to loathe.
“The bottom of the Delaware River, R.I.P buddy.”
Part of me was waiting for him to say I'm joking I'm joking again but the other part knew that this was the most serious I'd ever seen Ace.
He patted my back awkwardly, “Any more questions?”
“Can you take me home?” I whispered.
He looked at the ground, “No.”
I really was not in the mood. I stood up and walked into the next room where I assumed the exit was but it was just a mess of tables piled with unfinished projects, tools and materials.
In the midst of all the chaos and filth there was a singular earring glittering like the stars making the mess around it seem less messy. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Too bad it didn't have a pair. I reluctantly left the earring behind and entered the next room.
It was a contrast to the previous one in every way. The walls were white and covered in paintings, there was a black couch with white throw pillows and a fuzzy blanket. The floors were wooden without a speck of dust and in all the corners there were air fresheners filling the room with sweet smells. But the most eye-catching part was the floor to ceiling window.
I wandered over and the view was breathtaking. A crystal clear stoney lake surrounded by rolling hills filled with wildflowers that faded into white capped peaks.
Suddenly Ace was beside me,
“Can't find the door can you?”
I rolled my eyes, “Are you gonna tell me where it is or just stand there smirking?”
“I will tell you but I can't take you home.”
I glared at him, “why?”
“Maybe I should just show you.”
He tapped the window twice and the picture changed from the mountains, to a brick wall, to a TV and the news began playing.
I was still trying to figure out how that happened when a brown eyed brunette that would have been pretty if she wasn't covered in makeup smiled at the camera. “Good morning America I am standing in front of the Delaware River bridge and as you can see this is the sight where mastermind criminal Ace crashed into the water and escaped.”
A picture of my face flashed across the television screen. Ace changed the channel and again it was my face.
“Ace Identity finally found!” read the headline.
“22yr old cat burglar Reyna Lyndaker AKA Ace.”
Ace turned the TV off and the screen switched to a forest.
I sank to the floor in a defeated lump.
“So this is it then a life of crime or prison.”
He crouched down beside me. “Or…..”
I flopped onto my back like a dead bug. “Are you gonna kill me?”
He looked at me like I was a crazy person which I very well might be
“No, I have a plan.”
I didn't love the idea but I was out of options. We shook hands the proper way. It was time to swindle a swindler swindler. No that was not a typo, FaithAnn K Darling is a trillionaire from Canada who makes her fortune by swindling swindlers.
Ace himself had been fooled by her and lost a precious earring. She's in really tight with the police so she buys things off the black market then calls the cops and they arrest the dealer letting her get away scotch free and all the richer. Not one person leaving to tell the tale, but Ace got away. Now we're going back for revenge I guess.
