I was nervous. I didn't know what to expect once the door opens. I watched as Seth open the door with his key card. Kor stayed closely behind me, as if I would disappear within a second and escape.
The door opened without a sound. The lights inside the room was dimmed, but there was a fine line of dim green light coming from a side. Since there was no one in sight, I stepped in to the room.
As soon as I entered the room, the lights turned on. If it wasn't for the lights in the hallway, that would have temporarily blinded me. It was such a powerful light, and it took me a several moments to realise that the walls were the source of light, not something like a bulb or a glowing object. The walls emitted the light within. It was so strange that I stared at them for a moment, trying to adjust to the intense light.
I heard Seth and Kor entering behind me, reminding me my purpose to come here in the first place. I searched for the source of the dim light I saw before entering, which was several dozens of glass coffins laid on the floor in a neat order, there colors varying from one to another.
I swallowed, forcing down the need to exhale sharply at the sight. Instead, I squinted my eyes at the coffins, There were Elkelyns inside most of them, but some were empty. All the coffins were filled to the brim with a neon green liquid, so bright that it emitted a light itself. There were several cables and tubes attached to them and it was all connected to a single device on the wall. It was currently off, only showing a black screen.
And in the nearest coffin to me laid Relach, his hair strands floating in the green liquid. He was mostly naked, only a little cloth covering his privates. The injuries he got from the torturing were still there, but he looked like he was submerged in a very deep sleep. I stared at him, unsure what to do for a moment.
His skin was paper white inside the neon green liquid, like he had lost all of his blood. I turned to Seth, unable to grasp the situation. "What is going on here? How can I get him out?"
Seth and Kor smirked at each other before speaking. I wanted to roll my eyes and tighten my grip on their minds, but I didn't. The pure white light around the room was hurting my eyes so badly, they were tearing up the more I kept them open. I blinked, and waited.
"Aww." Seth said, eyeing my face. "She's tearing up. Look. I think she's going to cry."
Kor didn't say anything, but a ghost of a mocking smile covered his mouth. I decided to ignore them both. I nudged the thread I had on Seth, forcing him back on to the topic. I could not waste my time here. Resh was still in danger.
Seeing my indifference, Seth rolled his eyes. "We are experimenting on immortality here. Yea, yea, I get your next question. Why the hell would we experiment on that when we already have it, right?" He paused, bouncing on his toes. "But you see, we die from injuries, from loss of blood, just like mortals and Elves, though we don't age. These experiments are to stop that from happening or improving regenerating abilities so there won't be anytime to bleed." He shrugged and pointed his chin at the coffins. "Impressive, right. Most of them are volunteers. Some are prisoners and some are... let's just say they had special genes and abilities so we had to collect them and let they fulfill their duties to the nation."
I felt sick. They used their own to experiment on these things, like lab rats and frogs we used to experiment back then we did practicals in our school laboratories. Though I felt nothing back then, I definitely felt something now. Disgust.
Keeping my face neutral, I nodded. I didn't have time to fell disgust here. My main question was still unanswered. How the f**k was I to open these damn coffins without harming Relach? Sighing, I gritted my teeth. If I were to escape from here after rescuing all my friends and family, I had to take risks. Even if the risk meant hating myself for the rest of my life for breaking someone else's mind.
Just like that, they were my puppets.
I watched as Seth and Kor move in different directions, their eyes unfocused. Seth went to the machine where the tubes and wires connected from Relach's body and started working on it. Soon there were sevaral charts showing on the monitors and and a rhythmic beeping sound coming from it. The green semi-liquid substance in Relach's coffin began to drain from a hidden drainer in it. I watched as his face surfaced with the rest of his body, his skin a little green from the liquid.
Kor was busy checking on the security cameras and alarms. I was not sure if this room had any, but not sure was not enough to get me out of here. As it seemed, it was a good thing I commanded it to him. Right now, he was imagining Unnel coming and telling him to change the security footages and cover up his tracks because he was doing a secret experiment that he wanted to keep a secret from everyone else.
I guarded the door, sending threads alongside both of corridors in case anyone approached. So far, nobody seemed to be near twenty feet, which was a good thing.
But why?
This place should be always guarded, collecting samples and data and whatnot, but there were not even an assistant to be seen. I got a feeling of dread. Didn't all this all seemed too easy, looking back?
What if this was a trap within a trap? A mouse, hoping to run away from a cat, comes so close, only to realize it's impossible... that there was no escape.
I shook my head, not daring to go down that road. Even if it was a trap, I would have to still try and try to get out, until eventually I could succeed. It was that simple.
My thoughts went to Savin. Was he okay? Though I wished he was here with me, it was better this way. At least he was out of danger.
I straightened. There was a disturbance in the threads.
Someone was coming.
