Chapter 10
Sam parked Robbie's battered Toyota Hilux in the driveway and laughed to himself at the thought of the police looking for his Mitsubishi all over the state. Filled with excitement, he climbed out of the cabin and walked through the carport to the rear of the house, thinking about whether he'd tell Julia she'd be going home tomorrow when they went to meet Nicki.
He rounded the tank stand and stopped in his tracks, instantly alert. The back door of the house was wide open. He was sure he'd locked it on his way out earlier. He glanced around the yard. There was no sign of Julia or Butch. He listened. He couldn't hear them playing in the orchard either.
He wondered if the police had found them and broken into the house to rescue her, but there was no sign of the door being forced
