Chapter 5
Hanna read the email from her mother and rested her head in her hands on the kitchen table.
'What's wrong, Mum?' said Nicki.
'Oh, nothing for you to worry about.'
Hanna sat up and deleted the email. It was the only way to keep it from Nicki's prying eyes. She slipped the phone into her handbag. 'What do you want for tea tonight?'
'Can we go to McDonalds for a cheeseburger and chips?'
Hanna knew they should be eating something healthier than cheeseburgers and chips but the news from her mother had sapped her resolve. It was bad enough knowing Sam was out of prison and looking for them but this new demand scared her. She knew she wouldn't be able to hide from the police as easily as she'd hidden from Sam.
'Alright. Put your coat on. It's cold outside.'
