Chapter Twelve Her mother was behind the house in the garden, walking through a row of peas. She lifted a big silver bowl full of greens and lettuce. Naomi hesitated for a second when her mom’s all-knowing gaze landed on her. “Hi, Mom,” she said. How lame was that? She winced. Susan Parker had on shorts that stopped at her knees and a faded green sleeveless blouse. Her graying hair was tied back in a ponytail. The smile she always had for her kids left her face. “So how are you feeling today? Didn’t see you at breakfast,” she said. The fact that she hadn’t come over and checked on her last night or even this morning let her know that her mom was more upset than she’d originally thought. “Good,” she lied, and her mom made a face, most likely at the horrific sight staring back at her. “
