CHAPTER 11 — The Thing Beneath Ironfang

639 Words
The words didn’t belong to Lyra. Even Aiden felt it. He stepped back slowly, eyes locked on her glowing form. “Lyra…” he said carefully. “Talk to me.” But she didn’t answer. Her head tilted slightly, as if listening to something far away—something deep under the earth. The silver light around her chest pulsed again. Stronger. More intentional. “I can hear it,” she said softly. Aiden frowned. “Hear what?” A pause. Then her voice changed again—warmer, older, layered. “Chains.” The candles in the room flickered violently. Aiden turned sharply toward the door. Footsteps outside. Fast. Heavy. Kael. The door slammed open. He walked in—and stopped instantly. His eyes locked on Lyra. On the light. On the unnatural stillness in her posture. “What is happening to her?” he demanded. Aiden didn’t answer immediately. Because he didn’t know anymore. Lyra slowly turned her head toward Kael. And for a second— Something ancient looked back at him through her eyes. Kael felt it instantly. His wolf recoiled. Not fear. Recognition. “Something is beneath this house,” Lyra said calmly. Kael’s expression tightened. “That is impossible.” Her lips parted slightly. Then she whispered: “It’s awake now.” A deep tremor ran through the mansion. Not loud. Not explosive. But precise. Like something shifting under centuries of silence. Kael turned sharply toward the floor. The stone beneath them vibrated faintly. Aiden noticed it too. “That’s not seismic,” he muttered. Kael’s jaw clenched. “Open the lower archives,” he ordered immediately into the corridor. “Now.” Guards rushed. But before they could move— A loud c***k echoed from somewhere deep below. Followed by silence. A silence too complete. Selene stood alone in her private chamber. Her fingers traced the glowing mark on her palm. It was dimming now. The diversion had succeeded. Kael was distracted. The pack was unstable. And Lyra— Selene smiled faintly. Lyra was reacting exactly as planned. “Good,” she whispered. Behind her, the cloaked man stepped forward again. “The seal is weakening,” he said. Selene nodded. “Yes.” The man narrowed his eyes. “If the thing beneath Ironfang wakes fully—” “I know,” she cut in. Her voice was calm. Too calm. “That is why I didn’t just poison her.” She turned slightly. “I synchronized her blood to it.” The man stiffened. “You did WHAT?” Selene smiled. Soft. Dangerous. “When it wakes,” she said quietly, “it will think she is the key.” Back in the west wing— Lyra suddenly gasped. Her knees buckled. Aiden caught her immediately. “Lyra!” But she wasn’t looking at him. She was staring at the floor. At the exact point where the tremor came from. Her voice dropped. “It knows I’m here.” Kael stepped forward. “What knows?” Lyra’s eyes flickered silver again. And when she spoke, it was no longer confusion. It was certainty. “The thing you locked away.” A beat. Then— A loud, violent BOOM echoed from below. The entire mansion shook. Books fell. Glass shattered. And somewhere deep beneath Ironfang— Something broke free of its first seal. Aiden pulled Lyra backward instinctively. Kael’s wolf surged violently inside him. “What did you DO?” he snapped, turning toward Lyra. But she wasn’t the same anymore. Her voice came softer. Stranger. Almost… calm. “I didn’t do anything,” she said. A pause. Then: “But it knows my name.” Another explosion echoed beneath them. Closer this time. And from the depths of Ironfang— A sound rose. Not a growl. Not a roar. A voice. Answering hers.
