I grin scrunching my shoulders at him
“Aw so sweet, thank you I needed a good compliment”
He blows out an exhausted breath shaking his head at me as I climb into the car, he places the box in the back and gets into the driver's seat.
“Where too?”
I shrug
“Lookout point or somewhere classy like that”
“Classy?”
“Well, I don’t know! Where do you suggest?”
He huffs starting the car
“We can go to mine if you want?”
I shrug
“Cool”
I take a drink, downing half of it
“So spit it out”
“Spit what out?”
“Why are we leaving the bar with a box full of drinks to go to my house?”
“It’s all true”
I answer him simply
“What is?”
“The dreams. The flashbacks, all of it. I was a child and my mate let another woman near him, I felt it every time they touched, the worst being the last where they did a whole lot more. I was 9, dad had to take the memories away”
He says nothing, his grip on the steering wheel tightens though, I watch as his knuckles turn white.
“You going to tell me who he is?”
I shake my head
“Nope, I’m already a freak I don’t want to make it worse”
“Your not a freak katy”
“Oh really, because from where I’m sitting my only friend only hangs out with me because I pay him to, the rest are either too afraid or they can’t stand to be around me”
“That’s not true, you are my friend because you're my friend. The money is a bonus because I have bills to pay but if I didn’t work at the bar I would still be your friend.”
I look at him, watching to see if he was being honest and to my surprise he was
“Huh look at that we have a friend”
Karma snides
“Ehh correction I have a friend, I’m the one that does all the work, you just sit at the back of my brain and tell me he looks like a penguin when he dances”
“You, me, we, the details ain’t important right now, what’s important is that we have a friend who would still be our friend even if we didn’t feed him”
She tells me rolling her eyes and filing her nails like she’s unbothered by the entire thing when secretly I know she’s freaking out inside.
“Have I made the princess speechless? I should win a f*****g award”
Joe laughs excitedly
“Hi don’t get cocky, I don’t like cocky people and now that I know we are friends I could take your money away and put it towards my alcohol habit”
“Oh really? Like you pay for it anyway. Your alcohol consumption comes out of my general budget, that’s why the bills are so damn high”
I snort and laugh, but I agree
“You make me sound like I have a problem joe”
“I make you sound like you do? I don’t need to make you sound like you do, you just do, you have a real serious problem and quite frankly I think you should go to rehab, you might be supernatural but there is no way in hell your liver is doing ok”
I howl in laughter, my eyes watering in happiness.
“See this is what I needed, you being a d**k cheers me up”
We drive to the fancy side of town where my mum had set up a new development of fancier houses.
“Ohhh you got a fancy house”
“Yeah after a month straight of me carrying you home your mum splurged, she thought I deserved it. Which by the way I do, I do deserve it”
“I’m not that damn heavy Jez”
“It’s not the weight I’m talking about, I swear it’s the emotional a***e, you poke and prod at my body in such a degrading manner it’s worrying”
“What?!!!!! Hahahahahaha”
Karma snaps howling in laughter as he says it. He’s just so funny I could laugh at him all day.
“You cheered me up, thank you”
I tell him honestly, he gives me a genuine smile
“Happy to do it, so what will we watch?”
I shrug
“Don't know, I haven’t watched tv in around a year so you can pick”
He stops the car then he looks at me like I’m crazy
“You don’t watch tv? What the hell do you do when you're not at the bar?”
“Work”
He snorts rolling his eyes
“No I'm serious, I woke up at 4:30 and did paperwork until 7, had breakfast with mum and dad then went straight back to work until I came to the bar”
“Your serious?”
He looks shocked and for once I genuinely felt offended
“Yes I’m serious, I work my a*s off. Being queen ain’t easy, plus I have the family businesses to deal with as well as a whole load of other things like the orphanage and transferring kids from the government to our government so our kids don’t get lost in their system. We take kids from Canada and Mexico as well and that’s even more difficult. It’s a lot”
His jaw was slack
“And here’s me thinking all you did was drink”
“Yeah I do, but when I’m not drinking I’m working”
“What about sleeping?”
I snort shaking my head
“Yeah I don’t sleep, I get drunk and pass out, sleep until the alcohol clears from my system just a little and then I wake up and do it all over again”
He jumps from the car, pulling out my box of drinks so I follow him up to his door.
“You must be so tired”
I shrug taking another drink
“I’m used to it, it’s always been like this but I do need to drink to sleep. I just don’t sleep if I don’t pass out, it’s why I drink so much so fast. Makes it work faster”
“Damn girl you have issues”
I shrug taking his keys from him and I open the door, pushing it in. It was a small modern bungalow, it had all the latest appliances, pretty furniture and a nice decking out the back.
“It’s just because I have a mate, when you meet your mate and you don’t sleep next to them you will understand. You just won’t sleep, our bodies are meant to be together so they won’t rest without them”
“I mean that makes sense”
He says setting the drink on the kitchen island, he pulls out another for me and then grabs one for himself. He lifts the remote and turns on Netflix so I take a seat, pulling out my phone but then I remember I have it turned off, then I remember why it’s turned off and that makes me down the jar a whole lot faster than I’m doing.
“Good, more, I need more”
Karma tells me, normally she stays away while I drink but tonight was different. Tonight we were both hurt. I down another lump looking at my phone.
“Stop looking at the thing or we will end up using it”
“I don’t want to use it, I don’t even want to be mated to him”
