Chapter 1: The Mate Who Said No
Chapter 1:
The Mate Who Said No
POV: Nyra Vale (Female Lead)
Opening Hook
I never thought my life would break in one sentence.
“I reject you.”
Those words still ring in my ears like a curse I cannot escape.
I stand very still.
My hands shake, but I hide it behind my back.
He is still looking at me.
Like I should understand.
Like I should accept it.
But I don’t.
I cannot breathe properly.
My chest feels tight.
The bond is there.
I feel it.
I know he feels it too.
So why?
Why did he say it?
My voice comes out small.
“Say it again.”
His eyes do not change.
Cold.
Strong.
Unmoving.
“I reject you, Nyra Vale.”
My name sounds strange in his mouth.
Like it means nothing.
Like I mean nothing.
I take one step back.
Then another.
My heart is beating too fast.
“You felt it,” I say.
He does not answer.
I shake my head slowly.
“No. You did. I know you did.”
Still silent.
That silence hurts more than words.
Behind me, I hear soft whispers.
The pack is watching.
I feel their eyes like fire on my skin.
I swallow hard.
“Why?” I ask.
Finally, he speaks.
His voice is calm.
Too calm.
“This bond is a mistake.”
A mistake.
That word breaks something inside me.
I laughed once.
It sounds broken.
“A mistake?” I repeat.
“Yes,” he says.
I step closer without thinking.
My anger pushes my fear away.
“You don’t get to call it a mistake,” I say.
His eyes narrow slightly.
That is the first emotion I saw from him.
Still controlled.
Still dangerous.
“I do,” he says.
My fingers curl.
I want to scream.
I want to cry.
I want to understand.
But I don’t do any of those things.
Instead, I ask the questions that burn inside me.
“Is it her?”
A pause.
That pause answers everything before he even speaks.
“Yes.”
My breath stops.
Selene.
My stepsister.
I feel something snap inside me.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Like a chain breaking in the wrong way.
I nod.
Once.
Slow.
“I see,” I say.
But I don’t see anything.
Not really.
I turn away.
Because if I stay one more second, I will fall apart.
Midpoint Twist Begins
Before I can walk away, another voice speaks.
Soft.
Sweet.
Fake.
“Oh, sister… don’t be like that.”
Selene steps forward.
She smiles.
But her eyes are sharp.
“I didn’t mean for this to hurt you.”
I look at her.
Really look at her.
She looks perfect.
Like she always does.
But I see something else now.
Something I ignored for years.
Her satisfaction.
“You knew,” I said quietly.
She tilts her head.
“Knew what?”
I laughed again.
This time it is worse.
“You knew he was my mate.”
Silence.
Then her smile grows.
Just a little.
That is enough.
My stomach turns.
Behind her, my stepmother stands watching.
No shock.
No surprise.
Just approval.
My world shifts.
Not breaks.
Shifts.
Because now I understand.
This was not random.
This was planned.
I turned back to him.
My so-called mate.
He looks away from me now.
Not at me.
At her.
That is all I need.
All the proof I need.
My voice becomes quiet.
“Did you choose her before you even saw me?”
He does not answer quickly.
That delay is another answer.
My chest tightens again.
I nod slowly.
“I understand,” I whisper.
But I don’t.
I really don’t.
Something inside me rises.
Not sadness.
Something harder.
Something colder.
I step back again.
And this time, I smiled.
It surprises even me.
“You don’t deserve to call yourself my mate,” I say.
His eyes shift slightly.
Finally,
Something small.
I will continue.
“But I will not beg you.”
My voice steadies.
“I will not break for you.”
Selene laughs softly.
“Good,” she says. “Then this is easy.”
I look at her.
“What is easy?”
Her smile deepens.
“You are nothing here.”
The words hit.
But I didn’t react.
Not anymore.
Because something inside me has already changed.
I look at all of them.
One by one.
Then I turn away.
Second Twist Begins
I walk.
Fast.
Away from the pack house.
Away from them.
My feet move before my mind agrees.
I don’t know where I am going.
I only know I need air.
Space.
Freedom.
But then I hear footsteps behind me.
Not one.
Multiple.
I stop.
Slowly.
Turn.
Three guards.
My stepmother’s men.
I already know what this means.
One of them speaks.
“Beta’s daughter. You are needed back.”
My jaw tightens.
“I am not going back.”
Silence.
Then the second one steps forward.
“Orders.”
That word.
Orders.
My life has always been ordered.
Always commands.
Always control.
Not anymore.
I shake my head.
“No.”
The first guard grabs my wrist.
Fast.
Hard.
Pain shoots through me.
Something inside me snaps again.
But this time…
It does not break.
It ignites.
Cliffhanger Build-Up
A low growl cuts through the air.
Deep.
Close.
Dangerous.
All three guards froze.
The grip on my wrist loosens.
Not because they want to.
Because they are afraid.
I feel it too.
That pressure.
That presence.
Behind me.
Very close now.
A voice speaks.
Low.
Calm.
But deadly.
“Remove your hand.”
The guard lets go instantly.
I turn my head slowly.
And I see him.
Not my mate.
Not the Alpha who rejected me.
Someone else.
Stronger energy.
Colder presence.
Unknown eyes watching me like I am something he has already claimed.
His gaze meets mine.
And he speaks again.
This time, only for me.
“You are not going back with them.”
My breath stops.
Because I do not know his name.
But I already feel something dangerous.
Something that s
hould not exist.
A second mate bond.
Cliffhanger Ending
And at that moment…
I realize my life has only just begun to fall apart.
Because I was not rejected once.
I was rejected twice.
And the second Alpha is already walking toward me.
